Virtual Town Hall withM. Daniel Givens, incoming dean

All are invited to join Dr. M. Daniel Givens, the college’s fifth dean, for a virtual Town Hall onThursday, June 4, 2020, at 3:30 p.m. The livestreaming event will be available on the college'swebsite.

Dr. Givens will discuss his ideas around the values that shape the college, his service in thedean’s role, and how he will engage with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and college partners inhis decision-making process.

Virtual continuing educationOn Saturday, May 30, from 3-5 p.m., join VA-MD Vet Med on Zoom for a virtual CE event,“The Future of Cancer Diagnosis andTreatment at the Animal Cancer Care andResearch Center (ACCRC),” a lecture byGregory B. Daniel, the college’s interim deanand professor of radiology. A Q&A session withthe center’s oncology clinicians and a specialappearance by the college's new dean, M.Daniel Givens, will follow the lecture. Located inRoanoke, Virginia, the ACCRC is slated toopen this summer.

Webinar for animal healthcareprovidersOn May 21, new developments and changes inrecommendations for animal care providersduring the COVID-19 pandemic werepresented by representatives from VA-MD VetMed; Virginia's Department of Health,Department of Agriculture and ConsumerServices, Board of Veterinary Medicine, andVeterinary Medical Association; and Maryland'sDepartment of Agriculture, Department ofNatural Resources, and Veterinary MedicalAssociation.

PHOPs pivots to serveFunded by the Centers for Disease Control andPrevention High Obesity Program, thePetersburg Healthy Options Partnerships(PHOPs) project and partners in the City ofPetersburg, Virginia, coordinated efforts to feedfamilies and improve access to healthy food inthe wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.ThePHOPs team is led by Kathy Hosig, associateprofessor in the Department of PopulationHealth Sciences and director of the Center forPublic Health Practice and Research.

Vet Med researcher co-PI onstudy of Lyme arthritisCoy Allen, associate professor of inflammatorydisease in the Department of BiomedicalSciences and Pathobiology, will assist inimmunological studies for research on Lymearthritis led by Brandon Jutras, assistantprofessor of biochemistry in the Virginia TechCollege of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Jutrasreceived a grant from the Steven & AlexandraCohen Foundation to study Lyme arthritis andthe contributing cellular component.

Alumni honored by VVMARecognized at the Virginia Veterinary MedicalAssociation’s (VVMA) Virginia VeterinaryConference were Thomas Cecere (B.S. ’01,DVM ’05, PhD ’12), associate professor ofanatomic pathology at VA-MD Vet Med, whowas named Mentor of the Year; and LaurenMaxey (DVM ’13), of Banfield Pet Hospital inFalls Church, who received the RecentGraduate Leadership Award. Congratulations,Drs. Cecere and Maxey!

Alumna retires after decades ofserviceMargaret Washburn (DVM '86), whoestablished Goochland Animal Clinic inMaidens, Virginia, in 1991, loves helping pets,but she “always told young people who wereconsidering going into veterinary medicine that... you really have to love people.” OtherVirginia Tech alumnae at Washburn’s practiceare Sheryl Flory (B.S. '90), Tamara Leopold(DVM ’99), and Brandi Layton (DVM ’11), whorecently purchased the practice with herhusband.

Alumna joins Texas Tech Schoolof Veterinary MedicineNancy Zimmerman (M.S. ’03), who completeda residency in small animal surgery at VA-MDVet Med, has joined the Texas Tech School ofVeterinary Medicine as a small animal surgeryprofessor. A diplomate of the American Collegeof Veterinary Surgeons, Zimmerman taughtveterinary students for 15 years at theUniversity of Wisconsin, as well as at otherteaching hospitals across the U.S. andCanada.

A license to chill with U.S. teamveterinarian Susan JohnsSusan Johns (DVM '02), the Land Rover U.S.Eventing Team veterinarian since 2014, sharesadvice on when and how to appropriately usehot and cold therapies on an event horse.Johns has participated as a treatingveterinarian at the majority of three-day events,both domestic and international, since 2002.

In memoryCharsa Ailes Raymond (DVM '01), of Horseheads,New York, passed away peacefully at home on April28, 2020, after a courageous, seven-year battlewith leukemia. Raymond graduated from VA-MDVet Med with a specialty in swine management;and though she treated the usual pets, she wasknown as the go-to vet for unusual pets andlivestock in her region.
