Daniel Givens, the college’s fifth dean, for a virtual Town Hall on Thursday, June 4, 2020, at 3:30 p.m. The livestreaming event will be available on the college's website. Dr. Givens will discuss his ideas around the values that shape the college, his service in the dean’s role, and how he will engage with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and college partners in his decision-making process. Around the College College celebrates Class of 2020 Commencement VA-MD Vet Med proudly conferred 123 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees, 31 Master of Public Health degrees — including 10 dual DVM/MPH degrees — and two Master of Science degrees in biomedical and veterinary sciences during a special virtual ceremony on May 15. We hope you'll watch the videos, read the stories, and relive the special moments. Beloved therapy dog receives honorary DVM Moose, an 8-year-old therapy dog that works with counselor Trent Davis at Virginia Tech’s Cook Counseling Center, received an honorary Doctor of Veterinary Medicine as part of the college’s virtual commencement exercises — and the world noticed! Moose's story was picked up by more than 600 global media outlets, including ABC, CBS, CNN, and NPR, among others. Thank you for your service, Dr. Moose! Virtual continuing education On Saturday, May 30, from 3-5 p.m., join VA- MD Vet Med on Zoom for a virtual CE event, “The Future of Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment at the Animal Cancer Care and Research Center (ACCRC),” a lecture by Gregory B. Daniel, the college’s interim dean and professor of radiology. A Q&A session with the center’s oncology clinicians and a special appearance by the college's new dean, M. Daniel Givens, will follow the lecture. Located in Roanoke, Virginia, the ACCRC is slated to open this summer. Webinar for animal healthcare providers On May 21, new developments and changes in recommendations for animal care providers during the COVID-19 pandemic were presented by representatives from VA-MD Vet Med; Virginia's Department of Health, Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Board of Veterinary Medicine, and Veterinary Medical Association; and Maryland's Department of Agriculture, Department of Natural Resources, and Veterinary Medical Association. PHOPs pivots to serve Funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention High Obesity Program, the Petersburg Healthy Options Partnerships (PHOPs) project and partners in the City of Petersburg, Virginia, coordinated efforts to feed families and improve access to healthy food in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.The PHOPs team is led by Kathy Hosig, associate professor in the Department of Population Health Sciences and director of the Center for Public Health Practice and Research. Vet Med researcher co-PI on study of Lyme arthritis Coy Allen, associate professor of inflammatory disease in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology, will assist in immunological studies for research on Lyme arthritis led by Brandon Jutras, assistant professor of biochemistry in the Virginia Tech College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Jutras received a grant from the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation to study Lyme arthritis and the contributing cellular component. Telemedicine visits now available for current Community Practice clients and patients The Veterinary Teaching Hospital’s Small Animal Community Practice is excited to offer telemedicine visits to the service’s current clients and patients. Alumni Corner Alumni honored by VVMA Recognized at the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association’s (VVMA) Virginia Veterinary Conference were Thomas Cecere (B.S. ’01, DVM ’05, PhD ’12), associate professor of anatomic pathology at VA-MD Vet Med, who was named Mentor of the Year; and Lauren Maxey (DVM ’13), of Banfield Pet Hospital in Falls Church, who received the Recent Graduate Leadership Award. Congratulations, Drs. Cecere and Maxey! Alumna retires after decades of service Margaret Washburn (DVM '86), who established Goochland Animal Clinic in Maidens, Virginia, in 1991, loves helping pets, but she “always told young people who were considering going into veterinary medicine that ... you really have to love people.” Other Virginia Tech alumnae at Washburn’s practice are Sheryl Flory (B.S. '90), Tamara Leopold (DVM ’99), and Brandi Layton (DVM ’11), who recently purchased the practice with her husband. Alumna joins Texas Tech School of Veterinary Medicine Nancy Zimmerman (M.S. ’03), who completed a residency in small animal surgery at VA-MD Vet Med, has joined the Texas Tech School of Veterinary Medicine as a small animal surgery professor. A diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, Zimmerman taught veterinary students for 15 years at the University of Wisconsin, as well as at other teaching hospitals across the U.S. and Canada. A license to chill with U.S. team veterinarian Susan Johns Susan Johns (DVM '02), the Land Rover U.S. Eventing Team veterinarian since 2014, shares advice on when and how to appropriately use hot and cold therapies on an event horse. Johns has participated as a treating veterinarian at the majority of three-day events, both domestic and international, since 2002. In memory Charsa Ailes Raymond (DVM '01), of Horseheads, New York, passed away peacefully at home on April 28, 2020, after a courageous, seven-year battle with leukemia. Raymond graduated from VA-MD Vet Med with a specialty in swine management; and though she treated the usual pets, she was known as the go-to vet for unusual pets and livestock in her region.
