At least 22 people were injured after a bomb

detonated on a packed London Underground train yesterday, setting off a “wall of fire” that burned commuters in Britain’s fifth terror attack in six months.

Witnesses saw passengers with facial burns and hair coming off at the Parsons Green station in west London

after the explosion on the train during the morning rush hour.

“At 8:20 this morning at Parsons Green station there was an explosion on a Tube train. We now assess that this was a detonation of an improvised explosive device,” police counter-terror chief Mark Rowley said.

Rowley said most of the injuries were due to “flash

burns”, while others were wounded by the stampede as passengers ran out of the station in panic.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said a “manhunt” was underway.

One local resident, Charlie Craven, who was on his way to the station, said he heard a “massive bang”.

“I saw an orange sort of fireball encompassing the whole Tube coming towards you,” he said.

Witness Lauren Hubbard described it as “a wall of fire”.

Twitter user @Rrigs, who posted pictures of a white bucket smouldering on the train, said: “Explosion on Parsons Green District Line train. Fireball flew down carriage and we just jumped out open door”.

The bucket, which was inside a frozen food bag from the budget supermarket chain Lidl, looked like the type used by builders and there appeared to be cables coming out of it.

Police sources cited by British media said the device

had a timer but had failed to detonate fully.

US President Donald Trump said that “loser terrorists” were behind the attack, adding that they were already “in the sights” of British police.

London’s Metropolitan Police dismissed the tweet as “unhelpful speculation”, and Trump was also rebuked by Prime Minister Theresa May.

“I never think it’s helpful for anybody to speculate on what is an ongoing investigation,” she said, speaking after an emergency cabinet meeting.

May also said the device was “clearly intended to cause significant harm,” condemning it as a “cowardly attack”. (See page 6-7)

Foreign Affairs Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed

Al Khalifa yesterday lashed the ‘malicious’ calls made online to organise demonstrations in Saudi Arabia, terming it as an attempt to disrupt public order.

The campaign dubbed “September 15 Movement” reportedly aired calls for organising demonstrations in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Responding to the issue on his Twitter handle, the minister condemned the move as an attempt to disrupt public order and create instability in the

Kingdom.“It’s clear that Qatar and

its accounts (on  Twitter) aim at harming the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its people, the same way it targeted Bahrain and failed,” the minister wrote hailing the loyalty of the

people of Saudi Arabia to their homeland and their leaders.

The campaign and its counter campaigns threads became the most discussed topics in the GCC on Twitter, yesterday, recording around one million tweets.

Top UAE official slams Qatar’s attempt to mislead international opinion

Geneva

Actions taken against Qatar by the Saudi-

led block of Arab states are legitimate sovereign decisions that are not in any way a ‘blockade’, but rather a ‘boycott’, a top UAE official has said.

“The irresponsible attitude followed by Qatar in supporting, funding and sheltering terrorists and terrorist organisations and the damages it caused to the Arab nations motivated others to ‘boycott’ the kingdom, said Obaid Salem Al Zaabi, UAE Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organisations in Geneva.

The explanation was made in response to a speech by Qatar’s representative at a clustered interactive dialogue held by the Human Rights Council with the Special

Rapporteur on unilateral coercive measures, as part of its 36th regular session in Geneva on Thursday.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt on June 5 severed diplomatic ties and imposed economic sanctions on Qatar, accusing it of backing radical Islamist groups.

The bloc’s 13 demands include Doha ending its alleged support for Islamist extremist groups, closing a Turkish military base in the emirate and downgrading diplomatic ties with Tehran.

In his response to Qatar’s representative, Al Zaabi said the ‘boycott’ resulted from the damage caused by Qatar’s irresponsible behaviour in supporting, funding and providing shelter to terrorists and terrorist organisations.

Further questioning the claims that the “Qatari people

were aggrieved by ‘blockade by boycotting countries’, Al Zaabi asked: “How can he explain the statements of senior officials from his country that Qatar and its citizens have not been affected by the severing of diplomatic relations, and that life in Qatar is still normal?”

“In our opinion, these contradictions, which always exist in Qatar’s policies, reveal the double-standards of his speech,” said Al Zaabi.

He further accused that the Qatari officials are taking contradictory stances to mislead international public opinion and to hide the true causes of the crisis.

“Everyone knows that Qatar supports terrorism and funds terrorist organisations,” he said adding: “It is unfortunate that the Qatari delegation has raised this topic for the second time today.”

A man who robbed an exchange house in the Southern

Governorate, disguising himself as a soldier, will learn his fate in October.

The accused, a Pakistan national, robbed BD2,700 from a Finance Company in the East Riffa in April after disguising himself as a Bahrain Defence Force soldier. He also threatened the employees there with a plastic pistol, according to the case files at the First High Criminal Court.

The judges on Wednesday heard the testimonies of the man and witnesses and adjourned the case to October 26 to give the verdict.

The suspect, police said, was arrested within 24 hours of

committing the crime with BD500 in his possession.

When arrested, the  accused, a 28-year-old, told the investigators that he stole a  uniform that was hung outside a house to disguise himself as a soldier and that he had  sent the rest of the amount, BD2,200, to Pakistan.

He also told the investigators that he painted the plastic gun to give it a more realistic look to intimidate the employees at the exchange house.

The man said he was going through a financial crisis and was trying to pay back his debts.

The defendant was charged with armed robbery and stealing an identity card to remit the stolen money.

After spending 36 years of her life as a foreigner

in India, a Bahrain-born woman, who was forced to leave the Kingdom at an early age, has finally made it back to her birthplace here in a bid to claim her nationality.

Her story received public attention when the High Administrative Court recently ordered to investigate the claims made by the woman (name withheld).

Court files say that the woman was born in the Kingdom to a Bahraini father and an Indian mother in the early 1980s. She claims that her biological father abandoned her 36 years ago.

In 1982, her mother was forced to leave the Kingdom

with the newborn after getting divorced.  However, one of the conditions mentioned in the divorce certificate was that the child should be brought back to Bahrain when she reaches the age of 10.

But that didn’t happen as the father refused to issue any legal documents, as his intention apparently was abandoning her.

The mother thus left the Kingdom with her baby girl using a one-time exit pass, as she didn’t have any identity proofs back then.

The woman, as per the court documents, was living  in India as a foreigner since then.

She, however, recently gained her entry into the Kingdom as a worker and had handed over the exit pass issued earlier by the

N a t i o n a l i t y , Passports and R e s i d e n c e A f f a i r s (NPRA) to the employees at Bahrain I n t e r n a t i o n a l Airport.

The woman’s advocate is now demanding the NPRA and the Central Informatics Organisation to grant her a Bahraini passport and an identity card and to enrol her in the official systems as a Bahraini citizen.

The court has adjourned the case to October 28 to hear the response of the authorities.

The United Nations’ International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is observed on September 16 every year. This event

commemorates the date of the signing of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer in 1987 when representatives from 24 countries met in Montreal, Canada and announced to the world that it was time to stop destroying the ozone layer. Ozone depletion describes two distinct but related phenomena observed since the late 1970s, a steady decline of about 4% per decade in the total volume of ozone in Earth’s stratosphere, and a much larger springtime decrease in stratospheric ozone over Earth’s polar regions. The latter phenomenon is referred to as the ozone hole. The Ozone day was first celebrated on September 16, 1995.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Montreal Protocol. As part of the anniversary celebrations, the Ozone Secretariat has launched a communication campaign ahead of World Ozone Day. The Ozone Heroes campaign is launched on 14 September, seek to celebrate the major accomplishments of the Montreal Protocol in protecting the ozone layer and the climate, to increase public recognition of the success and impact of the Protocol, and to generate further support for the Protocol and its new mandate to phase down climate-warming hydrofluorocarbons under the Kigali Amendment, adopted in 2016.

The Earth’s atmosphere is divided into several layers. The lowest region, the troposphere, extends from the Earth’s surface till about 10 kilometers in altitude where virtually all human activities occur. The stratosphere is the next layer from 10- 50 km. The ozone layer refers to the ozone within stratosphere, where over 90% of the earth’s ozone resides, though its thickness varies seasonally and geographically.

Ozone concentrations are greatest between 20- 40 km, where they range from about 2-8 parts per million. Ozone layer absorbs 93-99% of the sun’s high frequency ultraviolet (UV) light, which is potentially damaging the life on earth.

The discovery of the Antarctic ozone hole in 1985 lead to the ‘Vienna Convention for Protection of the Ozone Layer’. Later, the Montreal Protocol came into effect and CFC production was sharply limited since 1987 and was completely phased out in the next decade. Now the governments have decided to eventually discontinue production of CFCs, halons, carbon tetrachloride, and methyl chloroform while industry has developed more ‘ozone-friendly’ substitutes. Over 90 individual ozone-depleting substances are now controlled under the Montreal Protocol. Thus, it is expected that the ozone layer will recover over the next five decades.

The Earth’s ozone layer protects all form of life from the sun’s harmful radiation, but human activities in the past decades have damaged this protective shield leading to higher skin cancer, immune deficiency disorders, genetic damage, increased cataract rates, plastic degradation and are affecting air quality, marine life and causing crop damage. Increased penetration of UV results in additional production of ground level ozone, which causes several respiratory illnesses.

Almost all countries are phasing out the production of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) in an effort to safeguard the ozone layer. Its depletion is thus considered to be one of the most serious global environmental and human health threats.

World Ozone Day has been celebrated since 1994 and was established by the United Nations General Assembly. The day is mainly intended to spread awareness of the depletion of the Ozone Layer and search for solutions to preserve it. People from all over the world are expected to gather in Montreal on September 16th to join the talks and seminars.

Bahrain has already banned all imports of ODS. These include automobile and truck air-conditioning units, refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers, water coolers, ice machines, air-conditioning, heat pump units, aerosol products except medical ones, portable fire extinguisher, insulation boards, panels and pipe covers.

The only way to improve the situation is to stop the release of CFCs and other ODS into the atmosphere. As an individual we need to protect the ozone layer by:• Using‘Ozone-Friendly’products.• EnsuretechniciansrepairingourrefrigeratororACs,recoverand

recycle the old CFCs so they are not released into the atmosphere. • Vehicle air conditioning units should regularly be checked for

leaks. • ReplacingHalonfireextinguisherswithalternatives.• Protectingourselvesfromincreasedexposuretostrongsunlight.Head of Waste Disposal Unit, Supreme Council for Environment,

Eyewitnesses heard a loud bang and saw a “wall of fire” when a bomb went off

on a packed London Underground yesterday, with some commuters badly burned and others stampeding to the exit.

Local resident Charlie Craven was heading to Parsons Green station in west London on his

“The first thing I saw was an orange sort of fireball encompassing the whole Tube” train, he said.

“Bit like you see on 24, the TV show, or a movie sort of situation,” said Craven, who works in the City, London’s financial centre.

“It’s hard to explain because it happens in an instant and you run. There were people in it of course, this fireball is just going over your head and everybody’s screaming and you just run out of the tube as quick as you can,” she said.

Twitter user @Rrigs, who posted pictures of a white bucket smouldering on the train, said a “Fireball flew down carriage and we just jumped out open door”.

The bucket looked like the type used by builders and there appeared to be cables coming out of it.

Twenty-people were injured in the attack -- most with flash burns, according to police.

Others were injured in the stampede during chaotic scenes at the station in a leafy and normally quiet part of London.

“We were very, very lucky,” said Sally Faulding, a 51-year-old teacher who was on her way to work.

The explosion took place just as the train pulled into the station, she said, so “the doors opened automatically and everybody got out”.

Emergency services were called around 8:20 am (0720 GMT) after the explosion at Parsons Green station in a leafy southwestern suburb which police counter-terror chief Mark Rowley said had been caused by an “impro-vised explosive device.” Police immediately declared an investigation into a “ter-rorist incident.”   One Twitter user who posted pictures of a smouldering white bucket in the carriage described a “fireball” which “flew down (the) carriage.” Prime Minister Theresa May was prepar-ing to chair an emergency cabinet meeting while her foreign minister, former London mayor Boris Johnson, appealed for calm as did cur-rent mayor Sadiq Khan.

What happened

Britain has suffered months of repeated attacks, killing 35, since a lone attacker in March mowed down pedestrians and stabbed a police officer out-side parliament before police shot dead Khalid Masood, a Muslim convert with a histo-ry of violence. He is believed to have acted alone. In May, Salman Abedi, a Briton of Libyan origin, blew himself up outside a pop concert in Manchester, killing 22 -- a third of them children. Islamic State claimed responsibility as well as for a June attack near London Bridge which left eight dead. Police shot dead three attackers after they went on the rampage.

Months of attacks

There were no immediate claims of responsibility. US President Donald Trump blasted “loser terrorists” behind the latest attack as “sick and demented people” and blamed the internet as the perpetrators’ main recruit-ment tool.

Who was behind?

The National Health Service put the injured toll at 22. The London Ambulance service said 18 people were taken to four London clinics and the NHS added four passengers made their own way to hos-pital. Witnesses reported sev-eral passengers on the train had been “badly burned” by the blast. One journalist at the scene reported some victims’ “hair coming off.”

President Donald Trump sparked fury in London and yet another pointed rebuke

from Prime Minster Theresa May Friday after he claimed “loser terrorists” behind a botched London train attack were known to British police.

Trump took to Twitter to condemn an attack on a packed London Underground train that injured 22 people, but also appeared to suggest the UK authorities had dropped the ball.

“Another attack in London by a loser terrorist,” the US president tweeted. “These are sick and demented people who were in the sights of Scotland Yard. Must be proactive!” Trump said, appearing to reveal undisclosed intelligence from the headquarters of London’s Metropolitan police force.

That electronic broadside brought a terse public response from May, who warned the US president and others not to speculate.

“I never think it’s helpful for anybody to speculate on what is an ongoing investigation,”

May told journalists in London.Trump’s latest comments were similarly

described as “unhelpful” by London’s Metropolitan Police.

Nick Timothy, May’s former chief of staff, also branded the US leader’s tweet “unhelpful.”

“True or not -- and I’m sure he doesn’t know -- this is so unhelpful from leader of our ally and intelligence partner,” Timothy wrote on Twitter.

Trump’s keenness to underline a series of UK terror attacks, virtually in real time, has led to repeated outcry across the Atlantic that has helped indefinitely delay his much-vaunted state visit to Britain.

In May, British officials were furious after their US counterparts leaked shared material about an investigation into a bomb attack at a concert by pop star Ariana Grande in Manchester which left 22 dead.

The bomber’s identity and details of the probe leaked to US media before British officials felt ready to disclose them.

Trump angers Britain in midst of attack

The National Health Service said 18 people were taken by

ambulance to hospital, while four others made their own way to hospitals.

The London Ambulance Service said none of the victims “are thought to be in a serious or life-threatening condition”.

The MI5 intelligence service is assisting investigators, and police said Londoners should expect additional security measures over the weekend.

Armed police and sniffer dogs could be seen on the train and around the station, which is in a leafy area of west London popular with well-off commuters, and

filled with chic cafes. The area around the station was

later evacuated as bomb disposal experts secured what was left.

Local residents and businesses rallied together with businesses offering tea and the use of their toilets to people unable to get home.

The local council of Hammersmith and Fulham opened a rest centre in the area for those affected.

The bombing is the fifth terror attack in Britain since March, when a man mowed down pedestrians and stabbed a police officer outside the British parliament.

A black dot on a third-century Indian manuscript has been identified by Oxford University as the first recorded use of the mathematical symbol for zero, 500 years earlier than previously

thought. Scientists from the University of Oxford’s Bodleian Libraries, have used carbon dating to trace the figure’s origins to the famous ancient Indian scroll.

Bakhshali manuscriptThe birch bark scroll is known as the Bakhshali man-uscript after the vil-lage, which is now in Pakistan, where it was found bur-ied in 1881. It has been held at the Bodleian Libraries since 1902.

The Bakhshali scroll found to contain hun-dreds of zeroes, representing orders of magnitude in the ancient Indian numbers system. The earliest recorded example of the use of zero was previously believed to be a ninth-century inscription on a wall in a temple at Gwalior in India.

Several ancient cultures, including the Mayans and the Babylonians, used the zero placeholder but the dot used in ancient Indian math-ematics is the one that ultimately evolved into the symbol used today.

11-year-old boy mows lawn of White House

Washington

An 11-year-old boy earned a “great job” and a high five

from US President Donald Trump for mowing the White House lawn yesterday.

Frank Giaccio, from Falls Church, Virginia, wrote the president earlier this year saying that he owned his own lawn-mowing business and it

would an “honour” to mow the White House lawn.

The White House accepted his offer and Frank was invited to mow the grass in the Rose Garden on Friday under the watchful eye of uniformed park service workers.

Wearing goggles, a red shirt, khaki shorts, black sneakers and work gloves, Frank went to work

in the Rose Garden around 9:30 a.m. (1330 GMT). Trump appeared about 10 minutes later, gave Frank a high five and told him he was doing a “great job.”

Interviewed on the Fox Business network before heading to the White House, Frank said the day was shaping up to be “pretty much the best day of my life.”

Irish no-frills airline Ryanair announced it was cancelling 40 to 50 flights a day for the next six weeks in a bid to

Pieces of art depicting Adolf Hitler have been found in the bowels of Austria’s parliament. Workers renovating

Your logo is a cornerstone of your brand, so don’t rush the design, or treat it like an afterthought. And although these tips offer some guidance in the design process, it definitely should not be something you tackle on your own. Spending a bit of money on a professionally designed logo now is a lot better than spending even more on a complete rebrand three to five years from now. (thenextweb)

We all know that branding is a vital part of any business. If it wasn’t, you wouldn’t have well-established brands spending many thousands of dollars each year promoting it, and protecting it. So how do you design the perfect logo? One that represents your brand without being cast from the same mould as so many others?

Something all the most rec-ognisable logos have in com-mon is simplicity. They’re by no means plain, but they also avoid the use of unnecessary or flashy elements that make it difficult for your eyes to focus. Overly detailed or ornate logos are not only painful to look at, they’re also difficult to use in a variety of different settings, which is an important consideration.

It should be easy on the eye

It’s difficult to avoid having some current trend influ-ence the design of your logo, but there are always certain trends that stand out because they’re overused. And overused trends don’t only result in very generic logos, but also logos that date very quickly. There’s nothing wrong with using a minimalistic or vintage style in your logo, but combine the two with generic stock images wrapped in a badge, and suddenly you’re no dif-ferent to all the other hipster wannabe businesses that launched in 2015. That said, even a timeless design will need to be refreshed every now and again, but as shown by McDonald’s, it is possible to do this without complete-ly reinventing the brand. The golden arches have been part of the brand since 1960, with slight changes made every few years.

Timeless is better than trendy

Black isn’t a colour, or well, except when it is. Debates around colour in logos seldom touch on the status of black, but they do sometimes consider the link to emotion. But you can’t select brand colours using an implied emotional link without also  considering cultural meanings. And there are just too many variables to consider if venturing down this path.

Black is not a colour

There are some typefaces that should never be used in a logo: Comic Sans, Papyrus, and Curlz are three that immediately spring to mind. But although many brands stick to using serif and sans-serif typefaces in their logotypes, some decora-tive and script typefaces can still work. Though this largely depends on the name of your business, and the skillset of your designer. The biggest problem with decorative and script typefaces is that they become difficult to read when shrunk on smaller screens.

Choose your typeface and font carefully

Nepal has begun remeasuring Mount

Everest to check if the height of the world’s tallest peak was altered by a powerful earthquake that struck the nation in 2015, the government said Friday.

The official height of Mount Everest -- which lies in the Himalayan range, straddling the border between Nepal and China -- is 8,848 metres

(29,029 feet), first recorded by an Indian survey in 1954.

Numerous other teams have measured the peak, although the 1954 height remains the widely accepted figure.

“Nepal has never measured Everest on its own although the world’s highest peak lies in its territory. So we want to prove to our people that Nepal is capable of measuring Everest,” Ganesh Prasad Bhatta, head of the government’s

survey department, told AFP.

A team of Nepali and foreign experts have begun refining the methodology for the new survey, which is expected to take two years, Bhatta said.

A team of Sherpas will take measuring equipment to the summit either in April, the beginning of the spring climbing season, or October, another period of good weather on Everest.

Auditor KPMG yesterday distanced itself from a

report by its South Africa office used by the president to controversially fire the former finance minister and will repay its $1.7 million fee.

The scandal, which also led to the ouster of KMPG South Africa’s CEO Trevor Hoole, follows the collapse of Britain’s best known PR firm over work in the country.

Pressure is also mounting on US business consulting giant McKinsey over its dealings with the controversial Gupta business family accused of undue influence on President Jacob Zuma.

Opposition parties have alleged that Zuma ousted Gordhan at the request of the

Guptas so that a candidate more favourable to their financial interests could be installed.

In December 2014, KPMG South Africa was commissioned by the country’s tax service to investigate an alleged secret intelligence unit within the revenue collection operation.

Its final report appeared to suggest that the former head of the authority who went on to be the country’s finance minister, Pravin Gordhan, was aware or should have known of the existence of the rogue team. The report was used by Zuma as grounds to sack Gordhan  at the end of March, triggering a collapse in the rand currency and two separate credit rating downgrades.

“To be clear, the evidence in the documentation provided to KPMG South Africa does not support the interpretation that Mr Gordhan knew, or ought to have known, of the ‘rogue’ nature of this unit,” KPMG said in a statement.

“We recognise and regret the impact this has had. KPMG South Africa had no political motivation or intent to mislead. The partner responsible for the report is no longer with the firm.”

KPMG offered to repay the 23 million rand ($1.7 million, 1.5 million euros) cost of the report to the tax authority, and also pledged 40 million rand to education and anti-corruption NGOs -- the same amount it made from work for Gupta businesses. (AFP)

Output at US factories plunged in August due

to the big hit from Hurricane Harvey that shut down huge parts of the nation’s oil refining, the Federal Reserve reported yesterday.

The massive storm that hit the Gulf Coast of Texas late that month is estimated to have cut US industrial production by three-quarters of apcage point, the report said.

Total industrial output fell by 0.9 per cent compared

to July, driven down by the 0.3pc drop in manufacturing, which included big drops in output for oil, chemicals and plastics, as well as a 0.8pc drop in the mining sector, due to disruptions in drilling and extraction.

At the same time industrial capacity in use dropped to 76.1pc, down eight tenths from the prior month as the storm forced major shutdowns.

Economists had forecast an increase of 0.2pc in industrial production, and a slight rise in

capacity utilization, apparently not factoring in the likely impact of the hurricane on a major US industrial hub.

Manufacturing of energy products for consumers fell nearly fivepc in the month which the Fed said reflected in part the “hurricane-related reduction in petroleum refining.”

There were some positive elements in the report, including a rebound in manufacturing of motor vehicle and parts, which

retraced half the decline seen in July.

And even with the hurricane-fueled declines, total output remains 1.5pc higher than August 2016, while mining is nearly 10pc higher and petroleum production is up almost threepc.

In an explanatory note, the Fed explained that the hurricane impacts on many industries were estimated which means there could be big revisions in coming months.

US industrial output plunges in August

London

The London stock market slid yesterday as investors

shrugged off news of a bomb attack in the British capital and instead took their cue from the surging pound.

Sterling shot above $1.36 when a Bank of England policymaker signalled a rate hike for “the coming months”, after British borrowing costs were this week left on hold at a record-low 0.25 per cent.

Markets reacted little meanwhile to an attack on a London Underground train at Parsons Green, southwest London, which police are treating as a terrorist incident. A number of people were injured.

‘Rampant pound’The British capital’s FTSE

100 index of top companies fell  1.1pc as sterling rebounded to $1.3616  -- the highest level since June 2016.

“The FTSE is suffering at the hands of a rampant pound,” added IG analyst Joshua Mahony.

“Sterling rose to its highest against the US dollar since

Brexit with its best weekly return since February 2009,” noted Jasper Lawler, head of research at London Capital Group.

The pound was catapulted higher after the Bank of England’s most dovish rate-setter revealed that he may back a hike “as early as in the coming months”.

Gertjan Vlieghe, a member of the BoE’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), said he has been “struck” by a series of developments in the British economy, including high inflation, employment growth, slight wage increases and stronger spending growth.

“Until recently, I thought the appropriate response of monetary policy was to be patient, given modest growth and subdued underlying inflationary pressure. But the evolution of the data is increasingly suggesting that we are approaching the moment when bank rate may need to rise,” Vlieghe said.

“If these data trends of reducing slack, rising pay pressure, strengthening

household spending and robust global growth continue, the appropriate time for a rise in bank rate might be as early as in the coming months.”

The possibility of a hike as early as the next BoE policy meeting in November comes as other central banks consider similar moves with world growth slowly improving.

Eurozone trading was muted on Friday with Frankfurt and Paris stocks slipping 0.2pc.

Meanwhile, Wall Street

pushed higher despite disappointing economic data, with the Dow adding 0.2pc.

Sagging sales of autos held down overall US retail sales in August, which fell 0.2pc overall, as American consumers bought goods and services at their slowest pace in six months.

Meanwhile output at US factories plunged 0.9pc in August due to the hit from Hurricane Harvey that shut down huge parts of the nation’s oil refining, the Federal Reserve reported Friday. (AFP)

North Korea fired a ballistic missile over

Japan and into the Pacific yesterday, responding to new UN sanctions with its furthest-ever missile flight in what analysts called a demonstration of its ability to target Guam.

The launch, from near Pyongyang, came after the United Nations Security Council imposed an eighth set of measures on the isolated country following its sixth nuclear test earlier this month.

The blast was by far its largest to date and Pyongyang said it was a hydrogen bomb small enough to fit onto a missile.

The US Pacific Command confirmed Friday’s rocket was an intermediate range ballistic missile (IRBM) and said it did not pose a threat to North America or to the US Pacific territory of Guam, which Pyongyang has threatened

to bracket with “enveloping fire”.

Seoul’s defence ministry said it probably travelled around 3,700 kilometres (2,300 miles) and reached a maximum altitude of 770 kilometres.

It was “the furthest overground any of their ballistic missiles has ever travelled”, Joseph Dempsey of the International Institute for Strategic Studies said on Twitter.

Physicist David Wright,

of the Union of Concerned Scientists, added: “North Korea demonstrated that it could reach Guam with this missile, although the payload the missile was carrying is not known” and its accuracy was in doubt.

The North has raised global tensions with its rapid progress in weapons technology under leader Kim Jong-Un, who is closely associated with the programme and regularly pictured by state media overseeing launches and visiting facilities.

The North’s last missile launch, a Hwasong-12 IRBM just over two weeks ago, also overflew Japan’s main islands and was the first to do so for years.

But when Pyongyang tested two intercontinental ballistic missiles in July that appeared to bring much of the US mainland into range, it fired them on lofted trajectories that avoided passing over the archipelago nation.

“The North is sending a message, ‘we are not cowering before any sanctions and our warnings are not empty threats’,” Yang Moo-Jin of the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul said. (AFP)

China ‘opposes’ N. Korea missile launch, rejects blame

UN chief condemns test, crisis talks next weekN. Korea ‘has Guam in

mind’: Japan minister

Russia ‘firmly’ condemns new missile launch

Beijing

China condemned North Korea’s launch of a

ballistic missile over Japan yesterday, but said it was “irresponsible” to blame Beijing for regional tensions after Washington urged it to rein in its ally.

After the North’s latest test, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson called on China to use the oil it supplies to North Korea as leverage to pressure the isolated nation into reconsidering its nuclear programme.

But Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said Beijing had made “enormous sacrifices at a great price” by implementing UN Security Council sanctions on North Korea.

“The core lies in a conflict between the DPRK and the US. The focal point of the contradiction is not China,” Hua told a regular news briefing, using the acronym for the North’s official name.

United Nations

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres

yesterday condemned North Korea’s latest missile test, and said talks on the crisis would be held on the sidelines of the General Assembly meeting next week.

Guterres called on the North Korean leadership “to cease further testing, comply with the relevant Security Council resolutions, and allow space to explore the resumption of sincere dialogue on denuclearization,” read a statement by his spokesman.

The UN leader “condemns the launch” and said he will be discussing the situation “with all concerned parties in the margins of the upcoming high level week of the United Nations General Assembly.”

Tokyo

Japan’s defence minister said yesterday he believed North Korea “has Guam in mind”

after its most recent missile launch, noting it had sufficient range to hit the US territory.

Pyongyang has threatened the US Pacific territory with “enveloping fire,” sparking dire warnings from US President Donald Trump.

Itsunori Onodera told reporters that Friday’s missile, which overflew Japanese territory, flew 3,700 kilometres -- “long enough to cover Guam”, which is 3,400 kilometres (2,100 miles) from North Korea.

“We cannot assume North Korea’s intention, but given what it has said, I think it has Guam in mind,” Onodera said.

He warned that “similar actions” by the North would continue as Pyongyang appeared to have shrugged off UN sanctions agreed earlier this week.

Moscow

Russia yesterday condemned a new missile launch by North Korea that came days after

the United Nations Security Council imposed fresh sanctions on Pyongyang over its sixth nuclear test.

“Russia is deeply concerned by the latest provocative launches which lead to a further escalation of tensions on the peninsula,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

“We firmly condemn the continuation of such provocative actions,” he said.

Bahrain strongly condemns missile firingManama

Bahrain strongly condemned North Korea’s firing of a

ballistic missile over Japan’s Hokkaido island.

It also criticised the repeated provocations and unacceptable violation of the relevant Security Council resolutions, which constitute a serious threat to international peace and security, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom said in a statement.

The Ministry reiterated the solidarity of the Kingdom with friendly Japan and its support to all measures that preserve its security and stability.

The Ministry called on North Korea to abide by the Security Council’s resolutions and to engage constructively with all peace efforts.

It stressed the need of the international community to continue its efforts to stop all activities and practices that cause tension, and highlights the importance of supervision of the International Energy Agency of all nuclear programmes and activities.

Mohsen Makhmalbaf, one of the most influential directors in Iran and patriarch to a family

of award-winning filmers, began his career with strongly themed social films like “The Cyclist,” then took a new tack with exotic, colour-drenched film poems such as “Gabbeh” and “The Silence.” In “Kandahar,” his new work, he weaves the two threads together in a visually exalting, emotionally horrifying view of Afghanistan under the Taliban regime. Reading like a humanitarian cry for help, it is the first major film to describe the Afghans’ current suffering and oppression to audiences in vivid, inescapable terms. It is a film hard to ignore and one likely to have a strong impact on audiences willing to be caught up in its urgency.

The film gives rise to many questions about why refugees return to Afghanistan and what Iran’s attitude is toward them. Frustratingly, no answers are offered here, although some are suggested in Majid Majidi’s recent “Baran,” which would make a fine companion piece for special screenings. But here the intention is not to make a social treatise but a film of maximum emotional impact.

One reason pic seems addressed particularly to Western viewers is the choice of an English-speaking heroine, the courageous journalist Nafas (Niloufar Pazira), who presents the unspeakable tragedy engulfing the country from a knowledgeable outsider’s point of view. Raised in Canada after having escaped from Afghanistan as a child, she now returns to look for her sister, left behind in Kandahar during the family’s flight, after she stepped on a land mine and lost both legs. Actor-comedian Jim Carrey has been roped in to star in a new comedy series

titled “Kidding”. This will be his first regular television role since his days on the 1990s’ sketch show “In Living Color”.

The half-hour series will feature Carrey as Jeff, also known as Mr. Pickles, an icon of children’s television who also anchors a multimillion dollar branding empire. But when his family begins to collapse, Jeff finds no fairy tale or fable or puppet to guide him through this crisis, which advances faster than his means to cope, reports variety.com.

The project will also reunite Carrey with “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” director Michel Gondry. (IANS)

The ‘Twilight’ star said when he is not shooting films he just goes around east London on a pushbike and he almost made a Stealth van - a general white van which is a home in disguise - his full-time home.

However he decided against it because of insurance issues.

“I go around on my bike, so I’m basically a ghost. I nearly did it, I was 100 per cent going to live in a van, but not just any van - a stealth van! It’s a special niche, not like living in a trailer,” he said. (TOI)

Don’t get discouraged if it seems like everyone but you is getting a piece of the pie. Your time will come, but it probably won’t be today. While you may want to sink into tender feelings and sensitivity, others may want to float on the surface and dabble in fantasy worlds. Feel free to escape in your own world for a while.

Make some room for long communications with good friends. This is an important day to get the word out to people you love. Keep things light and energetic, which you do well anyway. Express your showmanship and make sure your bright presence lights up every room you enter. The world is your stage, so act the role you enjoy the most - your true self.

You may be the party-pooper today unless you do something to remedy your serious tone. This is a day for light, social activities and fun-loving times with friends. Don’t worry if things don’t seem rational. Sometimes it’s the unlikeliest route that ends up being the best. Don’t discount the fanciful and bizarre. Take a walk on the wild side. You’re the missing piece of the puzzle today. As a result, people will look to you for answers. The good news is that you’ll have them at the ready. Trust yourself. Information and new ideas may be flying around, and you may be called upon to make sense of it all. Don’t be afraid to err on the side of the fanciful. This may be exactly the answer needed.

You may run into trouble if you penetrate too deeply today. Keep things light and energetic if you can. Ironically, the harder you push to get something done, the more roadblocks you’re apt to encounter. Things will flow easily if you’re willing to let them. Give up some control and let a more whimsical energy lead the way.

Give your adventuresome, world-traveling spirit room to soar. This is a good time to embrace and express your dreams. Write them down, talk to others, and say them out load. Communication and information are key elements today. Things may move quickly, so stay alert and tuned into the energy that’s buzzing all around you.

Stop planning and start doing. There may be pressure to leave your normal routine and do something on a whim. Although this may not be your usual way to do things, it certainly isn’t a reason not to. Let your mind explore new realms. Feel free to pick up loose pieces of an old dream that you left hanging in midair. Rekindle your passion for life.

The answer for you today is “yes.” Explore, reach out, and expand your mind to the far corners of your world and beyond. There’s no need to be tied down to reality. Don’t restrict yourself to linear thinking. Take time out and enjoy the clouds. Information you receive should be extremely helpful in the pursuit of your wildest dreams.

This is a tremendous day for you. You may find that dreams really can come true. Make sure you stay abreast of communication and periodicals. Let your fingers dip into many different pies and keep a notepad handy. Your brilliant strokes of inspiration may come on a whim, so be ready to receive them. The genius within you yearns to spring forth.

Today you should take action in areas where you usually keep quiet. The more you explore your mind, the safer you’ll feel in your external reality. Be confident of your dreams. This is a day to connect with others about the things that feel most pleasurable. Indulge and enjoy. Take action. You have everything you need to make it all start working for you.

There’s a light, uplifting flavour to the day, which you should latch onto and take charge of. You’ll find that there’s a rather dreamy yet expansive quality to this energy that encourages you to soar higher and achieve more. Jump on opportunities, but be careful that you don’t act based on misguided information. Pipedreams will get you nowhere.

Try not to take things too seriously today. Realize that the best plans are sometimes the ones that were never made in the first place. Keep the lines of communication open and don’t discount things that sound off the wall at first. Dream big and don’t restrict yourself by thinking that your radical ideas have no basis in reality.

Facebook said it was revising its advertising policies to prevent

“discriminatory” targeting after a news report showed marketers could aim messages at categories of people such as “Jew haters.”

The world’s biggest social network announced the change after the nonprofit investigative news site Pro Publica on Thursday revealed how advertisers could target messages to demographic categories including anti-Semitic segments.

Facebook product manager Rob Leathern said Friday that the company had changed its ad targeting policy after learning

about the report, saying these messages represented “hate speech” prohibited by Facebook.

“Our community standards strictly prohibit attacking people based on their protected characteristics, including religion, and we prohibit advertisers from discriminating against people based on religion and other attributes,” Leathern said.

“However, there are times where content is surfaced on our platform that violates our standards. In this case, we’ve removed the associated targeting fields in question. We know we have more work to do, so we’re also building new guardrails in our product and review processes

to prevent other issues like this from happening in the future.”

The Pro Publica team said that, acting “on a tip,” it had logged into Facebook’s automated ad system and discovered “Jew hater” as an ad category, with 2,274 people in it (they had expressed interest in topics like “How to burn Jews” and “History of ‘why Jews ruin the world’”).

Because targeted ads are not sold for such small groups, the automated system suggested the category “Second Amendment” -- the right under the US Constitution to bear arms -- as an additional category. Its system had correlated gun enthusiasts with anti-Semites.

After 20 years in space, NASA’s famed Cassini

spacecraft made its final death plunge into Saturn yesterday, ending a storied mission that scientists say taught us nearly everything we know about Saturn today and transformed the way we think about life elsewhere in the solar system.

Cassini, an international project that cost $3.9 billion and included scientists from 27 nations, disintegrated as it dove into Saturn’s atmosphere at a speed of 75,000 miles (120,700 kilometres) per hour.

“The signal from the spacecraft is gone,” said Cassini program manager Earl Maize of NASA’s Jet

Propulsion Laboratory.“I hope you are all as

deeply proud of this amazing accomplishment,” he told colleagues at mission control. “This has been an incredible mission, an incredible spacecraft and you are all an incredible team.”

Cassini’s final contact with Earth came at 7:55 am EDT (1155 GMT). Its descent into Saturn’s atmosphere began about an hour and a half earlier, but the signal took that long to reach Earth because of the vast distance.

Cassini’s plunge into the ringed gas giant -- the furthest planet visible from Earth with the naked eye -- came after the spacecraft ran out of

rocket fuel after a journey of some 4.9 billion miles (7.9 billion kilometres).

Its well-planned demise was a way to prevent any damage to Saturn’s ocean-bearing moons Titan and Enceladus, which scientists want to keep pristine for future exploration because they may contain some form of life.

“There are international treaties that require that we can’t just leave a derelict spacecraft in orbit around a planet like Saturn, which has prebiotic moons,” said Maize.

Three other spacecraft have flown by Saturn -- Pioneer 11 in 1979, followed by Voyager 1 and 2 in the 1980s.

But none have studied Saturn in such detail as Cassini, named after the French-Italian astronomer Giovanni Domenico Cassini, who discovered in the 17th century that Saturn had several moons and a gap between its rings.

“This is the final chapter of an amazing mission, but it’s also a new beginning,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate.

“Cassini’s discovery of ocean worlds at Titan and Enceladus changed everything, shaking our views to the core about surprising places to search for potential life beyond Earth.” (AFP)

Warsaw

The museum at the former Nazi German death camp

Auschwitz-Birkenau has acquired 18 post-war paintings by a Polish-French Holocaust survivor that depict the horrors of the gas chambers, and which will go on public display next year.

“Often in the paintings, we see the author himself, with a tattooed number on his arm, as a prisoner of the Auschwitz camp, who with his own eyes saw the process of the extermination,” museum art historian Agnieszka Sieradzka said in a statement on the site’s web site.

The late Jewish artist, David Olere, was born in 1902 in Warsaw.

He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts before leaving for Berlin and finally Paris, where he worked for Paramount Pictures, Fox and other film studios by designing posters, costumes and set designs.

A few years after becoming a French citizen, Olere was arrested by French police in 1943 and sent to the Drancy camp and then onward to Auschwitz as inmate number 106,144.

There, the Germans forced him to work in the Sonderkommando, a unit charged with collecting and cremating the bodies of prisoners killed in the gas chambers.

“David Olere is the only prisoner of Sonderkommando who transferred his traumatic experiences from the shadow of the crematorium chimneys on paper and canvas,” museum director Piotr Cywinski said in the statement.

The powerful, emotive paintings “show both the everyday life of Sonderkommando’s work, the strength of the trauma but also the will of life of the person who went through the darkest of the camp experiences.”

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte may

declare nationwide martial law if threatened protests by communists and other leftists against his rule turn violent or disrupt the country, his defence chief said yesterday.

Defence Secretary Delfin Lorenzana emphasised he believed it was very unlikely martial law would be declared, but said the president was worried about

“massive” protests by the left.“He said, if the left will try

to have a massive protest, start fires on the streets, they will disrupt the country, then I might (declare martial law),” Lorenzana told reporters, recounting a conversation with Duterte.

“In my opinion, in my estimate the possibility of this happening is very remote. But the president is indeed very concerned because it might get out of hand.”

Sri Lankan police yesterday found the

body of a 24-year-old British journalist, Paul McClean, who is suspected to have been killed by a crocodile.

Divers found McClean’s corpse in the mud of a lagoon in the coastal village of Panama, 360 kilometres (225 miles) east of the capital Colombo by road, a police spokesman said.

“There were six or seven wounds on his right leg,” a

police official said. “The body was stuck in mud at about the same place where he was seen last by some others who were with him.”

A crocodile is believed to have dragged McClean away on Thursday afternoon, the officer said.

Police said the body was taken to a hospital at Ampara, the nearest town some 80 kilometres (50 miles) away, for a post-mortem examination which could take place over the weekend.

Kuala Lumpur

Victims of a fire at an Islamic school in the

Malaysian capital that killed 23 boys and teachers were buried yesterday, as hundreds of mourners looked on in stunned silence.

The blaze erupted in the boarding school in downtown Kuala Lumpur before dawn Thursday. Firefighters extinguished the blaze within an hour, but not before it had gutted the centre’s top-floor dormitory.

Horrific accounts emerged of students screaming in desperation because they were unable to escape the

inferno as the dormitory’s only door was on fire and metal security grilles barred the windows.

Rescuers found the bodies of 21 schoolboys and two teachers in piles, indicating there may have been a stampede as the students sought to flee the fire, the country’s worst for two decades.

At the Raudhatul Sakinah cemetery on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, a 1,000-strong crowd of mourners fell silent as the first body -- of 10-year-old Mohamad Aidil Aqmal -- arrived in a hearse.

‘Negotiations’ may defuse NKorea tensions

Moscow

Russian President Vladimir Putin and

his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron agreed in a phone call Friday that resuming direct talks with North Korea is the only way to resolve tensions over its nuclear programme.

In a statement, the Kremlin said the two leaders “were united in the opinion that it was unacceptable to allow an escalation in tension”.

The crisis needs to be resolved “exclusively through political and diplomatic means, by restarting direct negotiations,” they said.

Both Putin and Macron “decisively condemned the provocative” firing by North Korea of a ballistic missile

yesterday over Japan and into the Pacific, the statement said.

Macron’s office said the two leaders “underscored the importance of Russia’s role in this crisis for a united and strong response by the international community”.

The Kremlin statement said that during Putin’s discussion with Macron “it was underlined that an adequate response to Pyongyang’s irresponsible steps was taken” by the UN.

French foreign ministry spokeswoman Agnes Romatet-Espagne stressed the importance of sanctions against North Korea.

“In the face of this threat, France is ready to

work, notably within the UN Security Council and the European Union, to strengthen measures aimed at convincing the Pyongyang regime that it has no interest in escalation, and to bring it to the negotiating table,” she said.

EU diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini condemned the missile launch as an “outrageous provocation” and also vowed to step up sanctions on the rogue regime.

The EU will implement the latest UN measures against individuals and organisations on Friday, Mogherini said, and press on with efforts already under way to extend the bloc’s own sanction regime. (AFP)

Prince George school intruder is royal ‘superfan’London

A British woman who sparked a

security alert after breaking into four-year-old Prince George’s new school in London is a “superfan” obsessed with the royal family, The Sun reported yesterday.

The 40-year-old woman, named by the newspaper as Louise Chantry, an unemployed holistic healer, was arrested on Wednesday after twice entering the exclusive

Thomas’s School in Battersea.

“She wouldn’t have done any harm to George. He would have been safe with her. She just loves the royal family and loves kids,” her mother Rhona Crawford, 75, was quoted by the paper as saying.

Crawford said Prince William, his wife Kate and their children George and Charlotte “represent the ideal family life she would like to have”.

US researchers have developed a skin patch

that can melt fat in mice, and future tests will reveal whether it could treat obesity and diabetes in people, a study said yesterday.

The patch uses nanotechnology to raise the body’s metabolism and transform energy-storing white fat into energy-burning brown fat, according to

the report in ACS Nano, a publication of the American Chemical Society.

After four weeks, mice saw a 20 percent reduction in body fat where the patch was applied.

“Many people will no doubt be excited to learn that we may be able to offer a noninvasive alternative to liposuction for reducing love handles,” said study co-author Li Qiang, assistant professor of

pathology and cell biology at Columbia University Medical Center in New York.

“What’s much more important is that our patch may provide a safe and effective means of treating obesity and related metabolic disorders such as diabetes.”

Researchers have been searching for a way to transform white fat into brown fat, which is more common in newborns and

protects the body from cold temperatures.

Drugs are available to promote this process, called browning, but they must be given as pills or injections, which exposes the body to side effects such as stomach upset, weight gain and bone fractures, Qiang said.

But the patch appeared to deliver the drugs directly to the fat tissue, avoiding these complications in rodents.

Deir Jarir

Dozens of young Palestinian girls are

practising their footballing skills on a makeshift village pitch, enjoying an opportunity denied their mothers’ generation in the socially conservative West Bank.

Gender barriers and religious taboos mean that the sight of women wearing football kit, even girls, is still shocking to some Palestinians who regard it as a men’s game.

Yet women’s football has developed significantly since the first Palestinian team was formed in 2009.

There are now six adult teams playing in an outdoor league and a dozen more in an indoor league.

Around 400 girls over the age of 14 are registered as players, and more and more

younger girls are taking up the sport.

The 40 or so girls between 10 and 14 training in the village of Deir Jarir, outside Ramallah, have to make do with just six balls between them and their shirts have the name of the boys’ team on the back.

But under the watchful eye of coach Rajaa Hamdan, they are learning how to trap and pass a ball, dribble between cones and jump for headers.

Hamdan said she had been desperate to play as a child but was prevented by social attitudes in the village.

Now aged 32, she decided to set up a team for girls.

“When I was young, the circumstances did not allow me to practise, but the idea stayed in my mind,” she said.

“So I said to myself as I didn’t play when I was small, why doesn’t my village have

a team for girls like for the boys?”

Using Facebook, she urged girls to sign up and was surprised to have 30 volunteers a lmost immediately.

“I was afraid of problems with the villagers, but so far there have been no serious ones,” she said.

- ‘Realised my dream’ -Salma Fares, 12, said she

was proud to be part of the team.

“I am very happy to practise football with girls like me. It is my right,” she said.

“I am happy they formed a team in the village for girls, like for the boys.”

Amal Alaa, 13, echoed her enthusiasm.

“I love football a lot and when I saw the announcement of the team, I asked my parents to allow me to join.

“My dream is to become captain.”

Hamdan said she was happy with the success of her project but worried the girls would give up on football as they grew older.

“I am happy because I realised my dream of getting the girls out of the repression they face,” she said.

“In our culture and traditions, when girls get older they either wear a hijab or get married, so they will not play the game.”

The president of the village football club, Youssef Mousa, said he had been pleasantly surprised by villagers’ reaction so far.

“When the idea of setting up the team started, we were afraid of the subject because it was not easy to set up a girls’ football team in a conservative village.

“But so far there has been no problem.” (AFP)

Sampha beat nominees including fellow singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, breakthrough grime star Stormzy, and former winners The xx.

The Mercury Prize showcases a range of music genres by celebrating the best album by a British or Irish artist each year, picking a winner from a shortlist of 12.

Shooter at US school used family gunsLos Angeles

A teenager who killed another student and injured three more at a school in the US state of Washington used his family’s

guns and sent friends notes warning of the attack, according to court documents seen by local media.

Police in Spokane County said 15-year-old Caleb Sharpe was suicidal -- and shot fellow students at Freeman High School on Wednesday to “teach everyone a lesson about what happens when you bully others,” according to the documents.

Sharpe is accused of killing Sam Strahan, who confronted him as he attempted to launch his attack with a .223 caliber rifle.

County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich Wednesday said the gun jammed, and Strahan spoke to Sharpe before being shot in the stomach and face with a pistol Sharpe had in his coat.

“I always knew you were going to shoot up the school,” Strahan told Sharpe, according to court records. “You know that is going to get you in trouble.”

After shooting Strahan, Sharpe injured three other pupils in the hallway. They are all in a stable condition.

Australia in early setback in semisParis

Australia’s hopes of reaching the Davis Cup final for the

first time in 14 years suffered an early setback yesterday when world number 185 John Millman went down 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 6-3, 7-5 to Belgium’s David Goffin in the opening rubber of the semi-final.

Australia, the 28-time champions, haven’t made the championship match since they downed Spain in the 2003 final in Melbourne.

World number 12 Goffin predictably edged the first point of the semi-final, being played on clay in Brussels, despite suffering an early wobble.

“I had to dig deep. It would not have been possible without the support of the fans,” said Goffin.

Australia will try to level the tie later on Friday when world number 20 Nick Kyrgios, who lost to Millman in the first round at the US Open, faces tricky 77th-ranked Steve Darcis.

Kyrgios, who has been carrying a hip injury, goes into the match claiming: “I am not the professional tennis needs me to be”.

Writing on www.playersvoice.com, Kyrgios said he yearns to lead a “normal life”.

“I’m not making the improvements I should because I don’t want it enough, I’m not taking it seriously enough,” he said.

“I know that and there’s no point trying to convince anyone otherwise.

Belgium are attempting to reach their second Davis Cup final in three seasons having lost to Great Britain in 2015.

In Lille, Dusan Lajovic made a mockery of the absence of Novak Djokovic to give Serbia a shock 1-0 lead over France in their semi-final.

World number 80 Lajovic edged Lucas Pouille, ranked 58 places higher, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (9/7), 7-6 (7/5) in the first rubber of the tie also being played on clay.

“ T h i s is what the Davis Cup is all about,” said Serbia captain Nenad Zimonjic.

Lajovic took victory on a fifth match point.

However,France, the nine-time champions, levelled the tie when Jo-Wilfried Tsonga downed Davis Cup debutant and world number 95 Laslo Djere, 7-6 (7/2), 6-3, 6-3.

Tsonga, the world number 18, is playing the Davis Cup for the first time in over year

with his last appearance coming in the 2016 quarter-final win over the

Czech Republic.France captain

Yannick Noah was critical of his own performance.

“I did not have a very good match as

a captain. I was a bit stressed and I think I passed my stress to Lucas,” he said.

“I’ll have to improve our communication for the next rubber.” (AFP)

Pak celebrate return with series triumphLahore

Pakistan celebrated the return of international

cricket with a thumping 33-run win to clinch the final Twenty20 match and the series against a World XI team at

Lahore’s Gaddafi stadium yesterday.

The hosting of the short series is a major step towards convincing international teams to begin touring Pakistan again, with Sri Lanka already

due to play a Twenty20 match in Lahore on October 29.

Foreign teams have refused to tour Pakistan since a militant attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore in March 2009.

Under Sarfraz Ahmed,

Pakistan team outplayed the World XI -- with cricketers from seven countries -- in yesterday’s decider to match the important occasion by claiming the series 2-1.

Pakistan had won the first

match by 20 runs on Tuesday before World XI levelled the series with a seven-wicket victory in the second on Wednesday.

World XI captain Faf du Plessis hailed the series as a big step and success.

“This has been a huge success,” said du Plessis. “We wanted to come here and play a small part in cricket coming back to Pakistan. Thank everyone for the opportunity for coming here. “We were joking about it, the blokes were saying we should do this every year. For a lot of guys who don’t play a lot of international

cricket these days, this was terrific competition against a strong Pakistan side.”

Batting for World XI, only Thisara Perera, with a 13-ball 32 including three sixes and two fours, and David Miller, who hit a 29-ball 32, made significant contributions.

Others never got going in a shaky chase which saw three World XI batsmen run out. Pakistan pacer Hasan Ali finished as the best bowler with figures of 2-28.

Pakistan had piled up 183-4 after they were sent into bat by World Xi skipper Faf du Plessis. (AFP)

Morgan eager for Windies T20 clashChester-le-Street, United Kingdom

England limited overs captain Eoin Morgan is

keen to see how his side fares against an “experienced” West Indies team in today’s lone Twenty20 international at Chester-le-Street.

The fixture is the only Twenty20 fixture before the two sides begin a five-match one-day international series, which gets underway in Manchester next week.

England recently won a three-match Test series 2-1, after West Indies, belying their reputation as a weak outfit in cricket’s longest format, upset the odds to win the second Test at Headingley.

But the upcoming white-ball clashes are set to see West Indies, who beat England in the 2016 World Twenty20 final in Kolkata, India, bolstered by the likes of powerful opening batsman Chris Gayle.

“They probably have a bit more

experience ( t h a n

their Test squad) which is great,” Morgan told Sky Sports at Chester-le-Street on Friday.

“We want to play against the best possible side available to play in order to try and improve our game,” the Middlesex batsman added.

“We’re a very young side and we have a long way to go in T20 cricket. Our consistency levels have been up and down so it’s all to play for tomorrow.”

While acknowledging the presence of several strong ball-strikers in West Indies’ line-up, former Ireland international Morgan said England had batting firepower of their own. “It’s one of their

strengths,” he said. “It’s probably

one of our strengths as well. It’s going to be a r e a l l y

Shanghai, China

Carlos Tevez has shown

a better attitude and is doing extra training of his own will, the coach of Chinese club Shanghai

Shenhua said yesterday, days after

he called the Argentine overweight.

Wu Jingui, who took

over this week after Gus Poyet quit on Monday, vowed that Chinese football would see “a different Tevez” from now on.

The unfit Tevez is unlikely to feature in Saturday’s derby against Shanghai SIPG, the latest chapter in a colourful career spanning Argentina, Brazil, England, Italy and now China.

The 33-year-old forward earns among the highest wages in football, an estimated $850,000 a week, but his eight months in China have been

dogged by injury and poor form.Poyet resigned with Shenhua

below mid-table in the Chinese Super League (CSL) and his successor Wu wasted no time in telling Tevez that he would not be part of his plans until he shapes up. But speaking on the eve of the Shanghai derby, Wu took a more conciliatory tone.

“Tevez is still quite positive and absorbed in training, he even started doing extra training of his own volition,” Wu said yesterday. (AFP)

Arsenal win delayed clashParis

Arsenal came from behind to beat Cologne in their

delayed Europa League opener against a backdrop of crowd trouble at the Emirates Stadium.

Kickoff was delayed by an hour as ticketless away supporters attempted to enter the ground, with plenty of Cologne fans sat in among the home section when the

tie finally got underway in a match the Gunners eventually winning 3-1. Four arrests were made on suspicion of public order offences as extra police were deployed to the scene.

On the pitch, Arsene Wenger’s much-changed side showed determination to fight back from Jhon Cordoba’s early 40-yard strike and seal three points.

It was only after the interval,

following the introduction of Sead Kolasinac and a change of shape, that the Gunners hit back.

Kolasinac levelled less than four minutes after coming off the bench and Alexis Sanchez, a surprise starter ahead of a trip to Chelsea on Sunday, scored a marvellous solo goal before Hector Bellerin secured the win late on. The game was placed in doubt as a one-hour delay was announced due to crowd safety concerns and there are plenty of questions to be answered by Arsenal as to how the situation was able to unfold as it did.

Problems were all-but a certainty as some 20,000 Cologne supporters took to the streets of central London hours before kickoff.

The tense atmosphere inside the ground was tested in just the ninth minute as Cordoba gave the visitors the lead with a long-range strike.

David Ospina, starting his first Arsenal game since the FA Cup final, burst from his goal-line to clear but could

only find Leonardo Bittencourt with a poor clearance, leading to Cordoba lobbing an inch-perfect drive over the retreating goalkeeper.

Arsenal -- showing as many

as nine changes from Saturday’s win over Bournemouth and with the disruption of the delayed kickoff -- were slow to get going.

Theo Walcott burst through

but could not make telling contact with his shot, with only tame Olivier Giroud and Nacho Monreal efforts testing Timo Horn in the visitors goal before the interval. (espn.in)

UEFA charges Arsenal, CologneLondon

European football chiefs charged Arsenal and Cologne yesterday after vast numbers of away fans gained access

to the home sections of Emirates Stadium, sparking chaotic scenes that marred the Europa League clash.

Visiting fans were issued with 3,000 tickets but around 20,000 fans of the German club are believed to have made the journey to the British capital.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said he had been preparing for a postponement, describing the decision to play Thursday’s Group H tie as a “gamble”.

Both clubs now face disciplinary proceedings from governing body UEFA. (AFP)

Harry Kane ‘one of world’s best’London

Harry Kane is already one of the world’s best

strikers and does not need to win heaps of trophies to prove it, Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said yesterday.

Kane continued his rich vein of form on Wednesday by scoring twice against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, taking his tally to six goals in four matches for both club and country. But while his record puts him in the same bracket as some of the world’s deadliest finishers, the closest Kane has come to lifting a major trophy was a League Cup runners-up medal in 2015.

F o r m e r Manchester

United and Everton midfielder Phil Neville told BBC radio this week that Kane may have to leave Tottenham to be rated a “world-class player”, but Pochettino

disagrees.“It’s two different things,”

Pochettino said. “If you see different players and big players, it depends on the team, on the possibility of

playing in different leagues and countries.

“There are many factors. It is no doubt Harry Kane is one of the best strikers. He does not need titles to show he is one of the best strikers.

“It is true all players try to score, to win and of course to win titles, that is the aim of everyone, but for me so far Harry Kane is showing he is one of the best strikers in the world.”

Kane already has 80 Premier League goals in 120 appearances and he will be looking to extend that total on Saturday when Spurs host Swansea at Wembley.

Pochettino believes even Alan Shearer’s Premier League best total of 260 goals may not be out of reach. (AFP)

Spelling error leads to Montpellier jersey giftMarseille

A town in Vermont in the United States received

an unexpected gift of football jerseys from French club Montpellier after the Ligue 1 outfit made a spelling mistake on their shirts.

Montpellier ordered some shirts for the current season but they proved unusable due to a missing ‘L’ on the club logo.

Rather than bin the jerseys, Montpellier decided to send them to their American twin town Montpelier -- spelled with one ‘L’ and not two -- in Vermont.

“Very cool! Bonjour! Merci pour les chemises!” wrote the town of Montpelier on its website yesterday, thanking their French near-namesakes for the jerseys.

The error was only noticed last week and a few days later, Montpellier announced their intention to send the shirts to the small American town -- it had a population of less than 8,000 in the 2010 census.

“These shirts, it’s a shame to throw them in the bin,” Montpellier’s mayor Philippe Saurel had said when the mistake was discovered. (AFP)

Las Vegas

Gennady Golovkin has never been on the Las

Vegas boxing stage before, but thankfully for the three-belt middleweight champion his trainer Abel Sanchez is no stranger to the spotlight.

The 62-year-old, who runs “The Summit” gym in the San Bernardino Mountains, has trained 17 championship fighters and in 2015 was named trainer of the year by the Boxing Writers Association of America.

Sanchez will be in Golovkin’s corner today night at the sold-out T-Mobile arena when the Kazakhstan fighter faces Mexico’s number one star Canelo Alvarez for middleweight supremacy.

Sanchez was already one of boxing’s top trainers before Golovkin walked into his Big Bear, California gym.

Sanchez was well known back in the 1980s and 1990s when he guided future boxing hall of famer Terry Norris to stardom. He also piloted Paul

Vaden, Miguel Angel Gonzalez and Lupe Aquino to world titles.

“I have had to retire four guys in my career. I won’t let them get beat up. Sometimes they leave and go to other guys. I like to win,” Sanchez said.

Sanchez is back on top after joining forces with Golovkin seven years ago and in that time he has nurtured him from a raw talent to an explosive knockout artist.

Under Sanchez’s tutelage Golovkin has developed one

of the sport’s biggest knockout ratios at 89 percent. This will be the undefeated Golovkin’s Las Vegas debut.

Sanchez says few people outside of boxing know what it takes to develop a champion boxer.

“The struggle we trainers go through, you couldn’t imagine,” he said Thursday at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino. “The time and money and effort we spend with these kids is more than we spend with our families. (AFP)

Valtteri Bottas said he’d see finishing third in the

drivers’ championship as a failure after he was handed a new one-year contract by his Formula One team Mercedes.

The Finn trails his team-mate Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel by 38 points, and he said he needs to get his act together quickly.

“Anything in Formula One is always possible with seven races to go,” Bottas said

ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix, the 14th of 20 races this season.

“But I do definitely need to start finishing ahead of Lewis and Sebastian if I want to keep my title hopes alive, and rather sooner than later.”

He added: “I’m not here to finish third. I definitely want to be fighting for the title as long as there is possibilities for that.

“I really want to make the most out of the end of the year and I always set my targets

very high, so third is not one of them.”

Bottas has won two races this year and has 197 points, while Hamilton (238 points) and Vettel (235) have 10 victories between them.

A one-year deal could leave Bottas vulnerable at the end of next season, with Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo among the drivers who will become available.

But Bottas said he now had the opportunity to nail down a spot with Mercedes

with his performances this year and next season.

“For sure the team always wants to have options open for the future, I understand 100 percent. But I’m very happy with this. It’s still better than the original contract that I had,” Bottas said.

“As always with my career in F1, it’s going to be completely up to me. If I perform well, there’s no problem and we can have a long future together.” (AFP)

Toro Rosso driver Carlos Sainz will join Renault on

loan next season, the French team said yesterday, partnering Nico Hulkenberg and elbowing out Britain’s Jolyon Palmer.

The move by the 23-year-old Spaniard is one of a number of changes related to

McLaren’s decision to drop its Honda engines in favour of Renault at the end of this year.

“To be a Formula One driver for a manufacturer team is an honour and I hope to reward Renault’s faith in me with my very best performances on track,” Sainz said in a statement.

Renault’s managing director Cyril Abiteboul thanked Red Bull, Toro Rosso’s parent company, for loaning Sainz and also praised Palmer for his contribution over the past two seasons.

“He is a dedicated driver and we wish him the best in the next steps of his career,” Abiteboul said. (AFP)

Red Bull boss Christian Horner said Renault’s hybrid engines had “always fallen short” as speculation grew

that the French supplier was about to implement a shock divorce from the multiple world champions.

Horner slammed Formula One’s “frustrating” hybrid era, but he played down media reports suggesting Renault will walk away from Red Bull after next season.

“I think anything after ‘18 at the moment is purely speculation,” the Red Bull team principal told the BBC ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix.

“We have got a contract in place for ‘18. Anything after that is at this point in time just paddock rumour.”

The BBC, Sky Sports, Daily Mail and the Autosport.com website all reported that Renault was going to split with Red Bull after 2018, without naming sources.

Honda is tipped to hook up with Toro Rosso, Red Bull’s junior partner. The related moves, if confirmed, could have wide implications for the cars’ competitiveness, and for their drivers.

Fernando Alonso is expected to stay at McLaren if they ditch Honda, while Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen may want out of Red Bull if the Japanese engine-maker comes on board.

Honda has struggled to get to grips with the part-electric, part-petrol engines since returning to the sport in 2015, while Red Bull and Renault have long been at odds during the hybrid era. (AFP)

Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen

topped free practice for the Singapore Grand Prix yesterday, as McLaren’s move to dump engine supplier Honda triggered a wave of upheaval off the track.

Ricciardo clocked a record 1min 40.852sec in the second session at the floodlit street circuit, while Verstappen was half-a-second back -- with Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas third and fourth. All four were significantly quicker than the Ferraris, indicating possible problems for the Italian team. Kimi Raikkonen was ninth quickest, two seconds off the pace, and Sebastian Vettel was down in 11th.

“I’m after a dominant weekend and so far this

has been a good start,” said a confident Ricciardo. “It’s important that we keep that for tomorrow but I have faith that we can perform on this level all weekend.

“I know the challenge in qualifying will be a potentially stronger Ferrari and Mercedes but I’m confident we can stay up there and fight with them at the top.”

Vettel is a four-time winner at the Singapore night race, which started in 2008 and will now run until at least 2021 after organisers announced a four-year contract extension.

He arrived in Southeast Asia just three points back in the standings behind Hamilton, who has been in rampant form, winning three of the

last four grands prix.“We were obviously

close with the field today and we have still got some improvements to make with the car,” said Hamilton.

“Red Bull seem like they’re very strong... but nothing is out of reach.”

Honda split Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg was fifth on the

day while it was a positive session for McLaren’s Stoffel Vandoorne and Fernando Alonso, who were sixth and seventh. Their performance came after McLaren confirmed its widely trailed split with Honda, ending a troubled partnership with the Japanese engine-maker which began in 2015.

McLaren will be powered next year by Renault,

which simultaneously said it was leaving Toro Rosso. As part of the multi-faceted deal, highly rated Toro Rosso driver Carlos Sainz was loaned to the Renault team for 2018,
