Chapter 1 – Structure of Living Things

Lesson 3 – Diversityof Organisms

How are living thingsgrouped together?

Scientists classify all livingthings (put them into groups).

There are six groups called kingdoms. A kingdom is thebroadest group into which livingthings are classified.

How are living thingsgrouped together?

The six kingdoms:

Animal Protist

Plant Ancient Bacteria

Fungus TrueBacteria

The AnimalKingdom

All animals:are many-celled

get energy from eating otherliving things

The AnimalKingdom

Animals are divided into twosmaller groups:

vertebrates(with a backbone)invertebrates (without a backbone)

The PlantKingdom

All plants:are many-celled

can produce their own food

The PlantKingdom

Plants are divided into twosmaller groups:

vascular plants (plants with tubes)

nonvascular plants(plants without tubes) Moss

The FungusKingdom

All fungi (plural of fungus):are one-celled or many-celledcannot make their own foodabsorb food from deadorganisms around them

mushrooms mold

The BacteriaKingdoms

All bacteria:are one-celled

do not have a nucleus

The BacteriaKingdoms

Bacteria are divided into twokingdoms:

Ancient Bacteria(found in hot springs and saltwater environments)True Bacteria(found in and on otherorganisms; can cause disease)

The ProtistKingdom

Protists:don’t fit into other kingdoms can have one or many cellssome make their own foodsome eat other living thingssome break down dead organisms
