Principal’s Report
It has been extremely busy over the last two weeks, with lots of opportunities for students to extend their
learning outside the classroom: Big Day Out (Surf Carnival), Grade 7 and 8 Camps, Geoff Goodfellow (poet), Relay
for Life, and the student leadership auction and barbecue. I would like to thank the staff who have spent many
hours planning these activities, as well as giving up their time to attend camps and events away from their
families. The pleasing and positive news from all these activities was the positive involvement and participation
rates of students. Resilience is an important school value and we are constantly asking and supporting students
to work outside their comfort zone. As a staff, our aim is to develop a ‘growth mindset’ with all students. We
know that learning is not easy and requires hard work, resilience and determination. The following table
demonstrates the difference between growth mindset statements and fixed mindset statements:
When talking with their son or daughter, I encourage all parents to use language that supports a growth mindset.
Reports
As mentioned in the previous newsletter, our first term ‘Progress Report’ will be sent home to parents on
Wednesday 6 April. Grade 7 and Grade 8 students will bring their report home on the Wednesday afternoon.
Due to Grade 9 Camp and Grade 10 Work Experience, Grade 9 and 10 reports will be mailed home to parents.
The reports are intended to give parents an indication of how students have started the year, particularly in
regard to their organisation, effort, progress and behaviour in class. If there are any issues which arise from the
reports, we urge you to contact the relevant teacher at the start of Term 2. For your reference, I have attached
the reporting rubric that indicates the ratings your child may receive.

Uniform
It is good to see that our students have started the year in such a positive manner and the high standards are being
maintained. As the weather cools, we remind students of the need to ensure that uniform requirements are being
met at all times. The only acceptable colours for boys are grey shorts, grey trousers or navy blue parachute pants.
Other types of blue tracksuit type pants are not allowed. We now have LHS soft shell jackets (navy blue)
and LHS puffer jackets (navy blue) available for purchase at the school office.
Grade 10 ‘Work Experience’ and ‘Mock Interviews’
Each year, the Rotary Club of Latrobe voluntarily conducts mock interviews for our Grade 10 students. Interviews
are being held on Monday 4 April, in the Latrobe Memorial Hall Supper Rooms. Students are required to:Wear
neat clothing suitable for the position they are applying for;
remember to take all relevant documentation to the interview (references, certificates, resume etc.)
research the occupation they have applied for, so they have a deep understanding of the skills required for
the position
stay in class until 20 minutes before their interview time, sign out before they leave, walk down to the
Latrobe Memorial Hall where they will wait until they are called for their interview.
All Grade 10 students who applied for Work Experience, have received their work placement details and
information. Students are reminded that they should have contacted their employers either personally or by
phone, to introduce themselves and make arrangements such as starting times, lunch arrangements, finishing times
and dress requirements. We hope that Work Experience is a positive experience for all students.
Attendance
During the last week of Term, Grade 9 students will be on camp (Tuesday to Thursday) and Grade 10 Students are
on Work Experience (Tuesday to Friday). All students in Grade 9 or 10 who are not involved in these
events are required to attend school and an alternative curriculum will be provided.
Thank you to all parents who have been informing us of their child’s absence from school. If students are absent
from school for a period of time, please contact your child’s teachers or the school office to arrange work to be
sent home. It is the responsibility of the student to complete work that they have missed whilst being absent from
school. We appreciate your support with making sure students catch up on their learning, in order to maintain
their results.

Writer of the Month. Calling all poets!
All poetry entries for Writer of the Month must be passed in before the end of term. Winners receive a $15 gift voucher from The Devonport Book Shop as well as a certificate. Any questions, please see Miss Leonard.
Leadership Report The last few weeks have been extremely busy for the Leadership Team. Last Wednesday we held a BBQ and Student Leader auction to raise money for the Cancer Council. We would like to thank the staff for purchasing the Student Leaders, and the students for purchasing food from our BBQ. We raised over $800.
This past weekend the Leadership Team, Mr Gee, Ms Bramich, Miss Mack and Mrs Padman participated in Relay for Life. This experience was very rewarding and emotional for all involved. The Leadership Team would like to thank the staff who came and walked with us. Without them this would not have been possible.
Big Day Out last Thursday was a wonderful day, even though the weather was not perfect. Everyone who took part should be very proud of themselves as participating is the key to success.
We hope the Grade 7’s and 8’s had a fantastic time on their camps and we hope the Grade 9’s have an enjoyable camp experience during the last week of term. As Grade 10’s, we hold fond memories of our Grade 9 camp. Coming up is Grade 10 Work Experience and we are all looking forward to getting out into the work force. We are confident we will gain valuable skills and knowledge.
You may have realised that the first day of next term is ANZAC Day. It’s a long way off but all students who would like to take part in the parade, representing Latrobe High School, are welcome. If you would like to represent the school, please see Mr Gee before the end of term.
We would like to wish everyone a happy Easter and look forward to seeing you all after the break.

HPE Hot Spot BIG DAY OUT: Congratulations to all the participants in the Big Day Out surf carnival held on March 17. The HPE
staff would like to thank the students who came early and/or stayed after the carnival to assist in the setting and

NORTH WEST UMPIRES ASSOCIATION: Love Footy but don’t want to play?? Want to view the game from the best
seat in the house?? Want to get fit and earn $$ while doing it?? If the answer to these questions is Yes, then the
North West Umpires Association is the place for you. The NWUA is now recruiting Field, Boundary & Goal Umpires
for the upcoming season. Umpiring is a great pastime for both males and females, and can take you all the way to

SURF LIFE SAVING: The state junior championships were held on the weekend and the following students
performed extremely well against the rest of the state:

RUN DEVONPORT: Congratulations to three students who started their cross country training on
Sunday March 20 at the Run Devonport 5km. Darcy Miller was an impressive 3rd place (12th across the
line) in 20:12; Nathan Baldock was 25th in 21:45 and Cooper Stuart was 54th in 24:59.
SCHOOL SOCCER: School soccer will commence shortly after the rosters have been finalised. We
have two Under 16 girls teams with unfortunately not enough numbers in the boys roster to get a side
together. The girls will play Wednesday nights at Meercroft in Devonport.
SCHOOL FUTSAL: Futsal will be hosting a North West Tournament on Wednesday 27 April. School
futsal forms need to be in to the office ASAP by Thursday 31 March. Failure to bring your form in will
result in some teams forfeiting. If you are interested and available to coach a futsal team on this day,
please contact Mr Shaw.
NETBALL: The school netball roster has begun with two sides entered for Latrobe High School. Good
luck to the girls in the upcoming roster.
SCHOOL FOOTBALL: School football will begin at the start of second term. School football forms
need to be returned to the office ASAP by the end of term. If you are interested and available to coach a
football team, please contact Mr Shaw.
GRADE 7 REPORT
Students have returned from the Labour Day long weekend still talking about the exciting camp at Gowrie
Park on March 9 - March 11. Students have already completed a feedback sheet with the clear highlight
being biscuiting on Lake Barrington. Students were placed in house groups for the activities to try to
create new friendship groups and this worked well with many students meeting new friends. Some of the
key comments from the students were:
‘I loved camp so much! I made many new friends.’
‘ Biscuiting was awesome!’
‘Only thing I would change would be the time we have to wake up- we should be able to sleep in until
8:00am.’
The staff was very impressed on the whole with the behaviour of the students. Some key highlights for us
were that many students tried things for their first time and, whilst many were exhausted from the
activities, were still able to participate with a smile on their face.
The following students were deemed stars in their class this week:
7A: Chelsea Collins- Chelsea has displayed consistent effort in Physical Education. Chelsea was thoughtful
whilst at camp and was very caring to her peers.
7B: Chelsea Green- Chelsea has been putting in great effort in Maths lately and showing some great
understanding.
7C: Briar Parker- Briar displayed excellent game sense in Physical Education and assisted her peers in
activities and games.
7D: Porcha Stafford- Porcha has a great attitude and is consistent with her work efforts.
As mentioned in the HPE Hotspot, it was fantastic to see such a large number of Grade 7 students
participate in the Big Day Out surf carnival. We had the largest cohort of students participate in all ten
events and had a whopping 69% participation rate across the day, which was only just below the Grade
8’s 72% participation rate.
Students will now be debriefing about their camp experience leading into Easter and Term 1 break before
NAPLAN in Week 3 of Term 2 (starting on May 10) and the school Cross Country carnival on May 20.

GRADE 9 REPORT
Grade 9 Camp is fast approaching and will be held on the Tuesday 5, Wednesday 6 and Thursday 7 April
at Mt Roland and Lake Barrington. By now parents should have received two letters, a permission form
and a checklist. If you have not received these they will be available on the LHS website or at the office.
If your child does not have a wetsuit for camp it would be ideal if they could attempt to source one from a
friend or family member. Alternatively if they have a friend at school they can share with they should be
trying to organise this.
In this edition of the newsletter the Grade 9 group is recognising some of our Maths Stars. These are
students who have been showing one or more of the schools values, Learning, Respect, Positive
Relationships and Resilience. The current Maths Stars are Leigh Castles, Antoinette Clarke, Madison
Fidler, Jesse Langmaid, Chloe Lomax, Jesse McCulloch, Henry Mignot, Darcy Miller, Jared Gillam, Aiden
Kissick, Michaela Marshall, Lilly Maynard, Megan Sanderson, Jaime Frankcombe, Shania Grundy, Khai
Middlecoat, Georgie Orlando, Austin Taylor, Ella Westcott, Bryle Glasshower, Delecia Brockett, Isabella
Anderson, Billie Hodge, Claire Jordan, Amy White and Montanah Jago. Well done to these students!

GRADE 8 REPORT
Survivor Camp
They came, they saw, they conquered… wow, I thought our Grade 8’s were tough, but I didn’t realise how tough! The
traditional ‘Survivor Camp’ is designed to test and challenge; it provides an environment that is both physically and mentally
challenging. The Grade 8 students were taken to Fulton Park to partake in the Latrobe High Grade 8 camp program. I was very
impressed with the way all students conducted themselves and I am so looking forward to being part of this group’s
development throughout their time at high school. During camp, I witnessed the following:
There were outstanding examples of resilience.
There were many occasions when students learned new skills and were creative.
New relationships were formed and stronger relationships were built between teachers, student leaders and Grade 8
students.
Students further developed respect for each other, the environment and themselves.
Congratulations and thanks to Ashtyn Dennison, Amy Jones and Lochlan Holland, who presented the following speech to the
school during our assembly. Well done!
‘On Wednesday March 9, the Grade 8 students travelled to Fulton Park for the survivor camp. As we arrived at the gates
everyone had to get off the bus to complete an eating challenge before moving on to the next activity. We moved up to the
cabins and got into our old clothes to start our first rotation. In each rotation there were physical, mental, mucky, and eating
challenges. In the evening we had the choice of going on a walk with Karra, watching a movie or sitting around and talking with
friends. The next day we had to be up at 7am and sitting in our tribes waiting to hear what was going to happen that day. Each
team had to cook pancakes and then have them judged by the teachers. Once we had finished we moved on to our rotations.
For lunch we had the choice of cooking brains, tripe, heart, kidney, or liver, plus we had to eat it. We went down to our tribal
areas and each had to build a waterproof shelter using string, cling wrap and stick. Our shelters had to survive ten buckets of
water being thrown at us by the leaders. As it got dark we started the auction. Each team had a chance to buy back the lollies
that the leaders had taken off us on the first day. The next morning we had two final challenges to complete. The first one was a
scavenger hunt and then a cross country run. All the food that was left over from camp was thrown at us by the leaders whilst
we ran. The champions of the camp were the ‘Beach Babes, second were the ‘Power Puff Boyz’ and third were the ‘Warriors’.
We would like to thank all the teachers and leaders who went on camp and especially Mr Karafilis who organised the whole
trip.’

grade with the highest participation. As a result of the winning, I (Mr Karafilis) and Kaleb Richards will need to wear a fairy

As the term comes to an end, I would like to congratulate all hard-working students who continue to make the most of their
learning opportunities and continue to grow as people. I am always pleased when I hear reports of improvements in work
ethic and improvements in learning. I get a buzz out of reading and signing Strength Awards and congratulate all winning
recipients. I encourage all students to reflect on how they have performed this term, and encourage them to think about how
they can improve for Term 2. Please have a safe and relaxing Easter break and then a well-deserved break, ready for a
productive and positive Term 2.

Grade 10 Report In preparation for Work Experience, the Grade 10 students have been working diligently over the past
two weeks, preparing resumes and letters of application for their Mock Interviews. Shortly, students will
receive their allocated times for their interviews which will take place on Monday 4 April. Students will
need to dress appropriately for an interview, and therefore will need to bring to school a change of
clothes. Once the interview is over, students must dress back in their school uniform.
The Work Experience information pack was handed out to Grade 10 students last week. This pack
contains important pieces of information. Please take the time to go through the information with your
child. Students should have already returned to the office both the green and the orange sheet. It is up
to the student to make contact with the employer to arrange the finer details of their Work Experience
week. It is a good idea to have a list of questions ready so that nothing is forgotten.
Benefits to be gained from a Work Experience placement:
· insight into what a job involves
· hands-on experience that is structured and supervised
· useful work skills such as effective communication and teamwork
· confidence to learn and become competent at new tasks
· the chance to contribute in a work environment
· understanding of how people operate in a work environment
· opportunity to demonstrate commitment and reliability
· a new referee to add to a resume
· networking contacts to improve job opportunities.
This week is a great opportunity for students to see what life is like in the work force.
Those students who are not participating in Work Experience must attend school as normal.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Sally Hillier. Sally has spent many hours placing
students into their businesses of choice. This job isn’t easy and it takes a multitude of phone calls and
many conversations to place so many students. I’d also like to thank Leigh Bird and RoseAnna
Castigliari, in advance, for taking the time throughout the week to go and visit the Grade 10 students.

The Devonport Poultry Club is pleased to invite students to take part in their 'Chooks in Schools' and Junior Showing program for 2016. Participating Schools will be assisted by DPC Members, in housing, caring for and preparing their birds for shows - this year, there will be three shows in Devonport, which feature a 'Junior Section' for younger individual poultry exhibitors and/or Chooks in Schools participants. Open Show - Saturday 25 June Annual Show - Saturday 30 July Agricultural Show - 25-26 November If any students are interested in learning more about breeding, caring for and showing purebred chickens, please feel free to contact the Secretary, Mr Ellis Dick on 64284075.

Entry is NOW OPEN in the 2016 Schools Writing Competition! Students all over Australia are invited to enter their poems OR short stories, and battle it out for the great cash prizes on offer.
There is no theme!! Entrants are encouraged to let their imaginations run wild and get their creative juices flowing to write on ANY TOPIC and in ANY STYLE. Students from ALL GRADES are welcome to enter - Kindergarten to Grade 12.

A REMINDER TO STUDENTS WHO CATCH
BUSES Students catching a bus to school are reminded that they are not to disembark the bus at bus stops in Gilbert St. This is in breach of our policy and we ask that all students remain on the bus until they are at the school bus stop. Students catching buses after school must also catch the bus at the school bus stops either in Last St or Percival St.
The manager of the Mersey Link buses has contacted the school and indicated they will not pick students up from or drop students off at alternative bus stops.
