RDA records in OPAC now?
• From LC testers: bibliographic & authority records– Resources being added to LC’s collections– CIP materials
• From CIP partners: bibliographic records• From other libraries: bibliographic records LC
testers using for resources LC is acquiring
• From NACO participants: authority records
3
MARC? ISBD?
• Encoding and display not part of RDA:
– MARC for now and immediate future
– ISBD for now -- but a Program for Cooperative Cataloging group is considering abandoning ISBD punctuation
4
If LC doesn’t implement RDA?
• New RDA records will still be added to LC’s database and OPAC:
– From CIP partners: bibliographic records
– From other libraries: bibliographic records used for resources LC is acquiring
– From NACO participants: authority records

Replacement of GMD
• 3 new elements developed with ONIX community using controlled vocabularies:
– Content type (MARC 336)– Media type (MARC 337)– Carrier type (MARC 338)

OPAC full record display
[Placement of 336-338 content during the Test; will need to reconsider]

Families -- not just as subjects
• Important for archival materials & collections• Specific family in MARC 1XX/7XX fields
• General family name still as MARC 6XX
100 3# $a Andersson (Family : $d 1860-1903 : $c Hult, Sweden)
600 3# $a Anderson family(subject authority has reference from “Andersson family”)
17
Identifying information in name authority records
• 046 = special coded dates• 370 = associated place• 371 = address• 372 = field of activity• 373 = affiliation• 374 = occupation• 375 = gender
18
Identifying information in name authority records
• 376 = family information• 377 = associated language• 380 = form of work• 381 = other distinguishing characteristic
of work or expression• 382 = medium of performance• 383 = numeric designation (music)• 384 = key
19
Identifying information: optional during US RDA Test
20
Not “losing” responsible entities
RDA basic instruction:245 $a Physics / $c by Susan Brown,
Melanie Carlson, Stephen Lindell, Kevin Ott, and Janet Wilson.
AACR2:245 $a Physics / $c by Susan Brown ...
[et al.].
RDA option if TOO many:245 $a Biology / $c by Mary Green [and
sixteen others].
21
1+ creators: always one in MARC 1XX
RDA:100 $a Brown, Susan.245 $a Physics / $c by Susan Brown, Melanie
Carlson, Stephen Lindell, Kevin Ott, and Janet Wilson.
AACR2: no 1XX field if more than three entities.
22
Relationships important
• Relationship of person, family, or corporate body to resource being described
• Relationship between resources• Relationship between person, etc., and
another person, etc.
• Can identify type of relationship via designators -- terms in RDA appendices or in other vocabularies
23
Examples: relationship terms• artist• etcher• sponsoring body• composer• translator• editor of compilation• interviewee• photographer• cartographer• director; producer• former owner• performer• enacting jurisdiction
• abstract of (work)• choreography for (work)• concordance to (work)• screenplay (work)• sequel• finding aid (expression)• libretto (expression)• mirror site• reproduced as
• descendants• founder• employer
24
Parts of the Bible
• “O.T.” and “N.T.” spelled out when used• Name of testament not used for book or
groups of books
AACR2 = Bible. O.T. GenesisRDA = Bible. Genesis
AACR2 = Bible. N.T.RDA = Bible. New Testament
25
Change in MARC 240 field
• No longer “Selections” alone as the conventional collective title; in RDA either:
– Works. Selections (if more than one form)
or– [Term for single form]. Selections
e.g., Plays. Selections
26
Non-RDA records in database
• If LC implements RDA:
– update MARC 1XX, 7XX (& 8XX?) fields
– make decisions about changes in other fields (e.g., replace GMD)
– cataloging managers will consult with others at LC
27
RDA forms in authority records
• 1XX fields in RDA authority records
• 7XX X4 fields in AACR2 authority records
100 1# $a Harriot, Thomas, $d 1560-1621700 14 $a Harriot, Thomas, $d 1560-1621
130 #0 $a Bible. $p O.T. $p Genesis. ...730 #4 $a Bible. $p Genesis. ...
28
If LC doesn’t implement RDA
• RDA records will continue to be added to LC’s database
• Make decisions about changes to MARC bibliographic 1XX/7XX fields and to other parts of the records
• Cataloging managers will consult with others at LC
29
Impact on reference service and OPAC
• Regardless of RDA implementation decision• Just some of the issues involved:
– labels used in OPAC displays– placement of new MARC fields– changes in searching strategies– non-collocation of 1XX, 240, 7XX until non-RDA
records updated– non-collocation when more than three creators: 1XX
in RDA records and no 1XX in non-RDA records– explanations for users
