1.0 PRODUCT OVERVIEW & FEATURES
1.1 Description
Lindsay Broadband LB5155D series of rack mount Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFA) are
high linearity, low noise, Optical Amplifiers with single Optical output and Output power from
14dBm to 24dBm, in 1dBm steps. The LB5155D series provide a thermoelectric cooled DFB
laser with optical isolation on the input and output for stable, low noise operation. Auto output
power stability control (APC) and auto temperature control (ATC) are standard features. The
LCD front panel display is used to provide monitoring and associated alarms for all vital
parameters. If the EDFA operating parameters deviate from the permissible range set by the
software, the micro-processor will alarm the user through the LCD display and the warning
LED’s will start flickering RED with buzzer sound. The LB5155D is equipped with RJ45 and
RS232 communication interfaces for system network management. Powering is 110V – 240VAC
or 40 – 72VDC.
1.2 Features
• 19"standard rack mounted case
• Input / Output Optical Isolators provide low Noise Figure (<5.0db).
• -3 to +10 dBm input power range.
• 110 – 240VAC (50 to 60Hz) powering and 40 – 72VDC powering
• APC and ATC control circuits
• Built-in Microprocessor monitors laser and RF performance
• Front panel LED display, displays all functioning parameters
• RJ45 & RS-232 Port for Plug-in network management

2.0 SAFETY NOTES
NO SERVICEABLE PARTS INSIDE. REFER SERVICING TO QUALIFIED SERVICE PERSONNEL.
• The EDFA employs an infrared laser device that emits invisible light, which can permanently damage the retina of an eye.
• Avoid direct exposure to the laser light source.
• Never stare directly into a fiber or at any mirror-like surface that could reflect light emitted from an un-terminated fiber.
• Never view an active fiber through optical instruments.
• Always ground the EDFA before turning on power (grounding resistance should be less than 4 ohms), so as to prevent laser and user from static damage.

3.0 LB5155D SERIES FRONT PANEL AND BACK PANEL LAYOUT
The LCD front panel display allows you to monitor the EDFA’s parameter; i.e. Input/output laser
power (dBm), the laser’s bias current (mA), temperature (℃), and cooling current (mA).
Check the parameters using the Menu Buttons.
The DC Power Module has a three screw terminal strip to the 48VDC. Fuse replacement
should always be with the same type fuse; Cartridge type F3AL250V", 3 amp, 250V

6.0 INSTALLATION
6.1 Required Equipment & Tools
• Optical power meter
• Standard fiber test jumper
• Denatured or 99% pure isopropyl alcohol and lint free fiber optic cleaning wipes
6.2 Installation of EDFA
1) UPS power supply and an air conditioned environment are highly recommended for
stable and long-time EDFA operation.
2) Install the EDFA in the 19” rack. Leave ½ inch of space between the EDFA and other
equipment installed in the rack for proper heat dissipation.
3) Ensure the LB5155D EDFA is grounded and is mounted in a properly grounded rack,
grounding resistance should be smaller than 4Ω. Always ground the EDFA before
turning on power, so as to prevent laser and user from static damage.
4) Terminate the output port of the EDFA to prevent damage to the laser when not
connected to the system.
5) Ensure optical jumper connectors are matched properly to the device adapters. (ie.
SC/APC to SC/APC).
6) Carefully clean all the fiber optic connectors. The suggested way to clean a fiber optic
connector is to use a dedicated and dry cloth (Kimwipes ®’s fine cloth).
7) A microscope (at 100 times, 200 times) can be used to check the cleanliness of fiber
optic connector surface from any contamination or blemish.
8) Clean the EDFA connector before installing the optical test cable. 2.5 mm cleaning
swabs are available. Clean both the bulkhead and fiber connectors.
9) Measure the input optical power to the EDFA. Verify the Input optical power is in the
range of -3 to +10dBm. Use an optical power meter to verify that the optical input level is
within the specification.

10) You can now connect the Optical fiber to the OPT IN connector on the Rear panel.
11) Turn ON the EDFA & check the LCD display to verify that the System Initialization is in
process.
12) Remove terminator from the optical output and connect the optical fiber to the OPT OUT
connector.
Note: Always have the power turned OFF when the EDFA input/output are not connected
or properly terminate unused ports so as to prevent damage to the laser.
