Spring Term
2 March 2018
worthing@lancing.org.uk
www.lancingprepworthing.co.uk
Dear Parents,
We have had a very unusual week but for all the exciting weather events, it has been rather fun in
school!
On Monday, the Mayor of Worthing came to speak to the Prep children about the annual Mayor’s
Charity swim. This is a great event and many of our children have swum in the past raising a lot of
money. This could be a way of them to try to aspire to make a difference so I hope that many
children choose to participate. The three charities supported by the swim this year are Worthing
Mencap, GuildCare and The Alzheimer’s Society. The Charity Swim takes place on Saturday 31
March 2018 between 4.30pm and 9.00pm. To book your place and for more information visit
www.worthingmayorscharities.co.uk/swim2018.
On Monday evening we held our second parents’ evening this term and both occasions have been
very positive and supportive. Working together with you is so important for the success and
happiness of all our children.
On Tuesday the weather changed and since then we have been rather cold! Many games fixtures
and outdoor events have been cancelled or postponed but everyone has been in good spirits and I
have been glad to see the children very well wrapped up and enjoying the snow outside. We all
enjoyed hot chocolate on Thursday morning which was a lovely surprise!
We are looking forward to celebrating World Book Day next Friday followed by our spring term
Open Morning on Saturday, 10 March. Thank you in advance for your support for both occasions.
The Curry and Quiz night has been postponed until 27 April and we are all looking forward to the
staff/parent challenge again this year!
We have just heard that Erin W, has won a Millennium Scholarship to Brighton College! Warm
congratulations to Erin.
I have to end on some rather sad news this week. Chris Taylor, our lovely caretaker who retired two
years ago, passed away peacefully at the weekend. He had been ill for some time. Chris, a highly
intelligent historian and very interesting character, loved our school and especially loved the
children. He built up a wonderful archive on the history of the school and we hope to use this to
honour his memory in some way.
I hope you all have a lovely and safe weekend (and manage to keep warm!)
Best wishes,

World Book Day Friday 9 March
Next Friday we are looking forward to World Book Day when all the children are invited to dress
up as a character from their favourite book. We will organise a parade of costumes and there will be
an opportunity for your child to share their favourite book with their friends throughout the day.
Children in Years 7 & 8 have the option to come in home clothes and keep their character’s identity
a secret. If they go for this ‘Mystery Character’ option, they must wear a question mark around their
neck (either with a homemade badge or necklace) which invites fellow students to ask 3 questions
each about their character to see if they can guess whom it might be. House points will be awarded
to those whose identity remains a secret for the whole day.
Mrs Casey
World Book Day which takes place on Friday 9 March, celebrates the joy and value of books and
reading, especially for children. To celebrate World Book Day, we would like to encourage the chil-
dren to attend Nursery in fancy dress. The theme for the Nursery is ‘My Favourite Book Charac-
ter’ (or the character most resembling a costume you may have at home). Children can stay in cos-
tume all day if it is suitable, otherwise please supply nursery uniform to be worn after the parade.

This is in anticipation of our lessons starting in the first week of the summer term. If any students
would like to take lessons following this, please do let Mrs Goodson know if you would like to take
up lessons via email to jgoodson@lancing.org.uk
Rock Bands
Any pupils who wish to create a rock band in school should come to see Mrs Goodson so that they
can arrange a suitable time to use the instruments in the music room to practice. Unfortunately we
do not have any electric guitars at the moment but students who bring in their own should bring
them to the music room for safe keeping throughout the school day.

Following the Oboe demonstration on 8th February, if any students are interested in taking up les-
sons please do contact Mrs Goodson jgoodson@lancing.org.uk who will help set up a trial lesson.

Year 2 Bench Ball and Uni-Hoc v Windlesham House
On Monday morning the Year 2 pupils participated in some
friendly games of bench ball and uni-hoc at Windlesham
House. All the pupils fully immersed themselves and learnt
a great deal about how to play competitive games in open
play. A huge amount of fun was had by all, with LPW
winning 3 of the 4 games—very well done Year 2!
Hurst Prep School U11 Boys Hockey Tournament
LPW team v Windlesham House Lost 0-4
LPW team v Dorset House Drew 1-1
LPW team v Hurst School Won 1-0
On an extremely cold Wednesday, the Colts team played in a mini tournament at Hurst School. As
the afternoon developed so did their hockey. They were well beaten by the eventual winners,
Windlesham School; however, the boys learnt a great deal and at times played some very
expansive hockey which opened up opportunities to score. It was fantastic to see such progress
being made, and shows how far LPW pupils have come in the past couple of years. A fantastic
performance by all – well done! Player of the tournament: Riley T.
