The Cast and Crew
Kingston Literacy & Skills has been extremely fortunate to have the kind of steadfast support it’s had from the community over the last 16 years. It takes a small army of volunteers to run this event. Here are just some of the folks who play key roles in the Bee, many of whom have helped us out for years!
Jacquie Costron:
Honorary Chair
Jim Elyot: Master of
Ceremonies
Craig Walker: Master
Pronouncer
What can we say about Jim—he’s been with us as Master of Ceremonies for 11 years now and we really don’t know what would happen if he decided to take a vacation in May. Jim is the consummate professional and keeps the bee humming along nicely with his own brand of persuasive humour. We grately appreciate his continued involvement in the Bee. Keep on buzzing Jim!
As one of the new bees on the block, Jacquie really got into the hive action. She buzzed into her role as Honorary Chair and performed it with confidence and style. Thank you Jacquie .
Once again, Craig did a bee-utiful job of pronouncing the (sometimes) unpronounceable. We know its not the easiest of tasks in the hive, but someone has to do it and we can’t think of anyone better qualified than Craig. Drone on…!
The Judges Stephen Tanner, Chief of the Kingston Police, excelled in his position as a first-time judge, and managed to keep the peace at the judge’s table. Unfortunately Rob Mooy (Kingston This Week) and Lisa Ray (KROCK) were unable to attend this year’s bee as planned. Tanis Fairley, retired school principal and current social justice activist, graciously agreed to step in at the last minute, as did long-time Bee committee member Evelyn Maizen. Grate job Judges!
...And Committee …
A large part of why this event is so successful is that the volunteer committee that has organized it has been incredibly dedicated, hardworking and creative. While some might content themselves with a successful event, and leave each detail as it was the previous year, this committee consistently seeks out new elements, and works hard to make sure it is always fresh. While some faces have changed over the years, consistent traits of most committee members are their dedication, originality and great sense of humour.

Where would we Bee without our terrific volunteers? Many wonderful people helped us out on the night of the Bee, and we would have been lost without them. Here are just a few.
… And Volunteers Too ...
Want into the Hive?
The Spelling Bee Committee are dedicated folks who know how to work hard and have fun at the same time. If you are interested in being a part of this committee, please give Allison or Irene a call at
(613) 547-2012. We are always on the look out for new workers and drones!
The Last Word
While the Bee is a wonderful event, and tons of fun, it does serve a couple of very important purposes.
First, it helps to raise critical funds for our Family Literacy programs, which receive no government funding for their ongoing operations. These programs support and encourage the development of reading in families, especially in high-risk areas. The 2010 Bee raised over $26,000 for these programs, and for that we are truly grateful.
The Bee also helps to increase public awareness about Kingston Literacy & Skills, and literacy issues in general. The more people who know about both, the better.
Thank you for your interest in both the Bee and Kingston Literacy & Skills!
