Objectives

• Identify Kenya and Tanzania on a blank map of Sub-Saharan Africa.

• Understand why ethnic groups lay across the border between Kenya, Tanzania, and their neighbors.

• List two of the three natural geographic landmarks of this area.

Terms and People

Savannah is a flat grassland with few trees.

The Kikuyu are the largest ethnic group in Kenya.

The Maasai are a tall people, semi-nomadic, traditionally hunters and warriors.

Semi-nomadic people are those that wander part of the year and are settled part of the year.

Nairobi is the capital of Kenya.

Multiparty system is when more than one political party is allowed to run for elections.

Mt. Kenya and Mt. Kilimanjaro are the two tallest mountains in Africa.

Mt. Kilimanjaro is an active volcano.

In spite of being so near the equator, they have snow on their tops all year round.

Lake Victoria

Lake Victoria is the second largest lake in the world, after Lake Superior.

Lake Victoria is the source of the Nile.

Lake Victoria is the center of a basin, an area in which almost all the water flows toward a center.

Tanzania was the colony of Germany.

Queen Victoria of England and the Kaiser of Germany were cousins.

Some say they made the border where it is so that they could each have a great mountain and they could split Lake Victoria.

Kenya was once a colony of Britain.

Their job of drawing the border seemed to have little to do with ethnic groups!

Minty-green represents areas where the “Afro-Asiatic” group lives, including Somalis.

Pinkish-purple represents areas where the “Nilo-Saharan” group lives, including the Maasai.

Browns and greens represent areas where the “Niger-Congo” group lives, including the Kikuyu.

Note how the ethnic groups spill over even into neighboring nations.

The Maasai (also spelled Masai) are a semi-nomadic people located in Kenya and northern Tanzania.

The Maasai live on the savannah and are cattle-herders and hunters.

Because they have distinctive customs and dress and because they live near the East African game parks, they are among the most well known of African ethnic groups.

Young Maasai men show their athletic ability by jumping straight up from a standing position.

The Kikuyu (sometimes spelled Gikuyu) tend to live in more forested parts of East Africa.

The Kikuyu are traditionally small farm owners. They are often Christians.

Although many Kikuyu still wear traditionally dress, many are wearing modern western clothes.

Many Kikuyu are also moving to the big cities.

Although they account for only 22% of Kenya's population, the Kikuyu are the largest group and have dominated Kenyan economy.

Today, the Kikuyus drive most of Kenya's mini-trucks and taxis, run its newspapers, make up its civil service, own the glitziest hotels and the remotest roadside kiosks. They also have provided two of Kenya's three presidents.

Being better educated and richer than other tribes in Kenya, the Kikuyus have aroused some bad feelings.
