Glassy-Winged Sharpshooter

• Draws life-giving fluids out of living plants

• Spreads a variety of diseases to crops and ornamental plants

• Not native to California

GWSS Feeding

• Sucks in water from the host plant• Excretes a white liquid called “sharpshooter rain” • Drinks approximately 13 milliliters per day, or 200-300 times its body weight (equivalent to an adult human drinking 4,300 gallons of water per day!)

“Sharpshooter Rain”

• If you see white stains on your patio furniture, plants, a sidewalk or street, you may have glassy-winged sharpshooters in the area.

• Diseases include: Leaf scorch of Almonds, Oleander and other plants, as well as Pierce’s Disease in grape vines, blackberry, and other plants

• Hospitality industry employees can encourage co-workers and visitors to keep their eyes open

• Check your outdoor plants regularly

• Take walks in your local parks and recreation areas

• Collect specimen in suitable container
