What a difference a yearmakes…9 February, 2013 and it's been exactly a year since the Manroland Sheetfed Group emerged from the
train-wreck that was Manroland AG. So how is "the man behind Manroland", British industrialist
Tony Langley's latest venture faring one year on?

Tony Langley is smiling. In his Chairman’s
Review of the Langley Holdings PLC
Annual Report & Accounts 2012, which
were published the first week in
February, the eponymous founder, CEO
and Chairman of this remarkable
engineering group has much to smile
about. It has been another record year
for the group he has nurtured since
1975.
Revenues are €527 million, pretax profits
€121million, bolstered €25 million by an
uplift to market value of Manroland’s
Offenbach property portfolio, and the
group remains free of debt, reporting
€208 million of cash in hand at the year-
end. Manroland Sheetfed meanwhile,
reported to be “standing on its own feet” in Langley’s half-
year statement, “continued to do so in the second half”. The
Manroland Sheetfed Group, which comprises over 40

can say that the old
Manroland Sheetfed has been

new organization - one that is
more efficient, dynamic and responsive in ways unimaginable in the
past. What has not changed, however, is our capability to offer a

our customers, the top performers of the printing industry.
I can also say that other important things have not changed and
neither will they. Like maintaining the most demanding levels of
quality for which the legendary longevity of our presses are
renowned and the Manroland philosophy of technical excellence
and innovation. In Langley we have a shareholder that understands
the value of these, our most prized assets.
None of this would have been possible to achieve without the
support of our people here in Germany and throughout our market
organization companies around the world. For that I commend them
and on behalf of everyone I would like to thank our shareholder, Tony
Langley, for his direct involvement and guidance in bringing about
this transformation.
On the next pages you will find some examples confirming that the
new path is well accepted and honored by our many customers
around the world. Let’s continue focusing our efforts not only to
meet, but to exceed their expectations.

profit at this level despite the factory only operating at lessthan one third of its maximum capacity but with what weare seeing in the pipeline, I do expect this will increase in2013" ■■

companies world-wide, is not included in
the Langley figures, the press builder will
report it's figures in March and it is
planned to incorporate the Group into
Langley Holdings later this year.
Looking closely into the accounts it can
be seen that Langley paid around €80
million for the Manroland Sheetfed
Group last February - €21 million for the
Offenbach properties, roughly €59 million
for everything else. What’s not clear is
what he got for that on day one but the
pro-forma Manroland accounts at 31st
December 2012 included in the
Chairman’s Review are showing net
assets of €80million, after borrowing €57
million from Langley Holdings. Add the
€25 million fair value adjustment on the
German property in Langley Holdings’ books and the total net
assets are €105 million; around €45 million of that in cash.

Aquatint bsc’s Olympic stampThe Olympics may now be a distant thought to us all as we start
the New Year, but for one Manroland Sheetfed UK customer
Aquatint bsc, a design and print company based in Wimbledon,
London it will never be forgotten.
Aquatint bsc was selected to provide stamps within 24 hours of
the British athletes winning gold as part of Royal Mail’s multi
million pound sterling contract.
Two pieces of British history were made in the process. Firstly it
was the first time ever Her Majesty the Queen did not approve
the image of a Royal Mail stamp and secondly Post Offices
opened for the first time on a Sunday.
After 2 years of rehearsing and testing when Britain’s 2 female
rowers shortly followed by cyclist Bradley Wiggins won the first
clutch of gold medals on Wednesday 1 August, the Aquatint bsc
team led by Jane Kelly, Sales and Marketing Director, rose to the
challenge: “Being London based meant when that first medal was
won we had what resembled a paparazzi film set in our press room
and this was meant to be a confidential job! Sky, BBC and ITV added to
the pressure of the deadline, with all cameras fixed on our ROLAND
500 press all ready to record this historical event. For each medallist
who won gold on our routes, additional stamps were printed”.
Head of Royal Mail Andrew Hammond presented Aquatint bsc
with a framed set of both the Olympic and Paralympics Gold
medal winners: “Aquatint bsc had the largest role in the UK and
we had to make sure that we had selected the right team. Jane
Kelly operated and ran the project so tightly that we knew it
would not fail and at all times Aquatint bsc exceeded our
expectations and made my team feel part of this great
experience.”
Asked about the Manroland press, Jane said “The press never missed a
beat during the project; we worked with Manroland UK prior to
commencing the project so they were fully aware of the scale and
time constraints. They provided us with a small stock of critical parts
during the games just in case! The good news was we never had to
use any of these parts; we knew that if we required service Manroland
would only be a phone call away, we never had to call”.

Tramar SRL wanted to replace their existing KBA and ADAST
presses; they selected a new 5-color ROLAND 705 LV press
with coating. The popularity of the press was advocated
further when Costasan SRL also installed a ROLAND 705 LV
press to handle both packaging and commercial applications.
Scheduled for commissioning in the first quarter of 2013, is a
6-color ROLAND 706LV for Mundial SA, their first non-
Heidelberg machine in Mundial’s 50 year history, and a 4-
color ROLAND 704 for commercial printer FP Impresora SA.

Other new customers Albors Trabucco SH, a publications
print house and Imprenta Villagra SA, a commercial printer,
each installed a 5-color ROLAND 50, an extremely resourceful
press thanks to shorter makeready times, precise color
control and less sheet wastage. With a maximum delivery
pile height of 700 millimetres, it’s the highest in the 36/52
format class.
With so much activity in the Argentinean market, Danelon
concluded: “Our presence in the local market is now firmly
established. We believe by staying as close as possible to our
customers we can provide the highest levels of customer
support and service” ■■
Now the secret is out Jane Kelly added “from this amazing journey we
have been able to demonstrate that we can cope with almost
anything in the design and print world, being innovative and 24/7
means that more doors that traditionally remained closed
are now opening“ ■■

Focus: Manroland ChinaIn each issue we feature one of our 40 subsidiaries. China is the world’s second largest packaging country and
statisticians predict that by 2015 it will be number one. That’s an
awful lot of printing and Manroland Sheetfed are already
making big inroads into the market.
Chinese printers are inevitably facing various new challenges. Print
buyers demand more on print quality, printing effects, lead times
and eco-environment protection to stay ahead of their tough
competition. One Manroland customer¸ Mr. Chen Chengwen,

ROLAND 900XXLexpands productionVincenzo Bona S.p.A., a printing house in the Piemonte
region of Italy, has been applying Manroland technologies
and solutions for decades. To expand production a new
ROLAND 900 XXL 7B large format 4-color press was recently
installed.
The company has been in close partnership with Manroland
more than half a century ago, operating ROLAND presses in the
1960s; and was the first customer to install a ROLAND 800
following its debut at drupa in 1972.
Vincenzo Bona specializes in printing school books and other
publications. They are also a preferred supplier to the Royal
House and the Academy of Sciences producing specialized
characters for friezes in both ancient and modern alphabets.

At a recent IHK chamber apprenticeship event in Offenbach, five
young Manroland Sheetfed apprentices each received
distinctions following completion of their apprenticeships.
Oliver Sticht, Head of Human Resources, Manroland Sheetfed,
said “It was most rewarding to recognize and celebrate the
outstanding commitments of the skilled workforce in
Manroland Sheetfed and to those persons dedicated to the
training and education of these young people”.
In September 2012, fifteen new trainees started apprenticeships
in Offenbach, in the fields of electronics, industrial
management, mechanical engineering mechatronics, technical
product design and machining. ■■

Chinese firm demandsnumber oneThe Fujikon Packing Material Company, based in southern China, is
the latest company in 2013 to order ROLAND presses. They
purchased an 8-color ROLAND 500 with full UV application.
The company produces high-quality film printing and packaging for
various industries including electronics, cosmetics, watches, food,
toys and stationery with more than 80 per cent of their products
exported to Europe and America.
They already have a 6-color ROLAND 700 and were so pleased with
the results they went back to Manroland again. Manfred Man, the
General Manager, said: “We are very demanding on printing
efficiency and stability and Manroland gives us assurance.”
The ROLAND 500 has the world’s flattest sheet travel and even with
substrates up to one millimeter thick and speeds up to 18,000
sheets per hour, it delivers outstanding print quality. It has high
levels of productivity and automation which drastically shortens
the makeready time, reducing the number of operators needed.
Mr. Man said the company targeted January 11th to sign the
purchase order so that the dateline consisted of three number ones.

“This signals that the company will stay ahead of the market and be
highly profitable in the New Year,” he said. Manroland were, as ever,

Foxfire, the US printer which appeared on the cover of
September's Printing Impressions magazine, recently took
delivery of their new ROLAND 900 XXL machine. The retail
specialist located in Newark, Delaware, USA is enjoying an
economic expansion boom, fuelled by an $6.5 million capital
investment that includes the new XXL press from Manroland as
well as creating 38 new jobs.
The Foxfire ROLAND 900 XXL with coating unit and extended
delivery in format 8 was delivered with a suite of QuickChange
optimization features and fully Automatic Plate Loading.
Exclusive okBalance® and Low Coverage Stabilization software
will enhance quality and provide efficient performance for the
life of the machine. TelePresence, the Manroland remote
diagnostic and maintenance software, provides a coordinated
maintenance schedule and a quicker service response should it
be required.

different press manufacturer, but once we looked at Manroland
and the 73” press we decided this was a better investment for
our future. We were eager to get the new Manroland press into
production to take advantage of the new automation and

30 members of the Italian packaging printers association GIFASP paid avisit to Shimizu Printing in Japan.
In true Japanese hospitality, Shimizu Printing recently opened its
doors to 30 visiting members of the Italian packaging printers
association GIFASP.
The Italian guests were given a tour of Shimizu Printing’s eco-
friendly facility in Tokyo, where they got a glimpse of the future
of print and discovered the secrets of the Japanese company’s
decades of success.
Founded in 1935, Shimizu Printing has been operating
Manroland Sheetfed offset presses for many years and these
featured in the tour. The benefits of “green” printing, such as UV
waterless printing for paper and plastic and high resolution
printing products down to 10-microns were demonstrated.
Company owner, Dr. Hirokazu Shimizu, who graduated from the
Waseda University Graduate School of Environment and Energy
Engineering is also the Visiting Senior Researcher at Waseda
University’s Environmental Research Institute and teaches in
several other universities in Japan and other countries.

Japan’s green printing pioneerItalian Packaging Printers Association GIFASP pays a visit to Shimizu Printing
Mr Sascha Bansemer, CEO of Manroland Japan, thanked Dr.
Shimizu and his team for a fascinating presentation: “As a
pioneer in ‘green printing’, Manroland is proud to be the sole
supplier of sheetfed presses”. ■■
Presumably the discount to net asset value was
substantially more on day-one; the business has
been re-structured since and only reached an
underlying break-even towards the end of the
year. Going forward Langley says he does not expect a
significant contribution to Group results from Manroland in
2013; “….that will come later” he says, but with the press
builder now structured to break even on €350 million of sales
and having achieved €358 million in 2012, he expects to see
“…something of an improvement in 2013.”
One year on, things are certainly different at the new
Manroland Sheetfed. Langley and his team have been
physically present in Offenbach for much of 2012 and it
shows. Gone is the top-heavy AG management with its
Vorstandt, Vice-Presidents, Executive Vice-Presidents and
Senior Executive Vice-Presidents, along with their endless
meetings, memos and corporate expense accounts. In its
place, a board headed by Langley himself, a few trusted
lieutenants and, sole survivor of the former Manroland AG
senior management, Rafael Penuela - now CEO. Around the
place managers stifled by years of bureaucracy are getting on
with well, “managing”. And on the shop floor there’s an air of
optimism. “One year ago, before Herr Langley came along we
had no future, today we have a future” said one worker.
On day one Langley installed German operations veteran
Alfred Rothlaender to head up the company and oversee a
transition from the colossus the company once was to the
lean organization that is characteristic of Langley businesses.
Rothlaender stepped down at the end of 2012 with "no stone
left unturned" to return to retirement, his final assignment
for Langley complete. During this time the company has been
transformed from the train-crash that hit the buffers on 25
November 2011 and emerged from the wreckage on 9
February 2012, into a company that can now break even
producing just 100 presses per year.
Times are still tough in the printing industry, not least at the
heavy metal end of the business. A collapse in demand for
new machines post Lehmann Brothers, combined with the
glacial pace of adjustment to overcapacity by the main
players has seen press prices dwindle and while Manroland
Sheetfed has addressed the issue of over-capacity head on,
many observers doubt whether the others have the financial
clout to grasp the nettle, even if they were inclined.
Inevitably,according to the age old law, when capacity
exceeds demand, price goes down. Prices for presses are no
more now than five years ago but Langley doesn’t seem
overly concerned: “Whilst our competitors are losing money
at current price levels, we are not. Our company’s cost base is
much lower, so I am content to sit it out.”
And sit it out he will. This is no asset stripper or venture
capital scavenger. Langley is a long-term player and having no
other shareholders to answer to, he can afford to wait. He
has thrived on buying good businesses at the bottom of the
cycle, re-aligning costs and waiting. Langley hasn't sold a
business yet and doesn't plan to start now. In the meantime
apprentice intake is being maintained at the press builder
and spending continues on R&D.
In the past, the big three German producers were obsessed
with market share. Langley isn’t playing that game. Judging
by the CEO change at Heidelberg, neither are they any longer.
Even KBA must be questioning the wisdom of trying to grab
market share from the new Manroland Sheetfed. With
Langley controlling things, Manroland has morphed into a
strong niche player and “ROLAND” aficionados are not easily
turned. “Why buy VW or Opel when for the same money you
can have Mercedes S Class?” one said.
“Revenue for vanity, profit for sanity” goes the motto. That's
certainly evident in Langley’s other divisions, two of which
are also German. They sanely outperform the VDMA, the
German machinery producers index, hands down. Not that
the Langley group is exactly small; with Manroland revenues,
this is getting on for a billion euro turnover business and it’s
privately owned and it has substantial cash reserves and it
has no debt.
A year on Manroland Sheetfed has a new shareholder, a new
direction and is looking to the future with confidence. What a
difference a year makes. ■■

In September 2012 Hecht, one of Europe’s most important players
in the billboard and POS market, located in Braine-l’Alleud in
Belgium, installed its second ROLAND 900 XXL 130 x 185 cm
maximum sheet size 4-color press with coating unit.
For more than seven generations, Hecht has been producing large
format posters, POS material, monumental graphics and bespoke
creations. Approximately 30% of the company’s 23.3 million euro
turnover in 2011 was for the growing POS market and it was for
this reason Hecht invested in its second ROLAND 900 XXL.
Laurent Vandecasteele, Managing Director at Hecht, explained “In
2008 we bought a ROLAND 900 5-color press and we had a very
good experience with that machine. The quality of the jobs
produced by this press is simply extraordinary and the machine is
robust, user friendly and quickly adjustable at a job change over.
These assets combined with the fact that Manroland Benelux
provides a great 24-hour service played an important role in
choosing yet again a ROLAND 900.”
Second ROLAND 900 XXL in production at Hecht
George Fischer: an Americanin AfricaIt has been a year since the old Manroland AG was split
between the British Langley and the German Possehl
groups. We spoke to George Fischer, managing director
of Manroland Southern Africa, about Manroland as an
American in South Africa sees it.
“2012 was like the old Chinese curse,
may you live in interesting times”
chuckles George. “In some ways it
was just another year in the usual
topsy-turvy world of printing. In
other ways, a clear signal that the
old ways are now gone.”
In February 2012, the Langley group
purchased the sheetfed
manufacturing assets as well as the
global selling organizations. The
webfed manufacturing assets had been purchased by the
Possehl Group. Both companies are serious industrial
players, owning multiple manufacturing companies, and
backed by largely debt free balance sheets. Both companies
are privately owned, so the ability to plan for the long term
is better than in a VC or publically owned company.
Looking back to those bleaker days, George reflects, “I must
admit, I was a little depressed about the insolvency filing by
the old Manroland AG. However, I knew that we had
fantastic underlying technology base, an excellent installed
base, and a solid ability to provide excellent service to our
customers. We had two great companies (Sheetfed and
Web) hidden under a cost base that was just too large. We
were a size 36 company in a size 56 structure. While it was
not pleasant, the cost cutting exercise of early 2012 was
about recognizing the reality of the print market.”
Today, George is happy with how things are going. “I look at
the balance sheet of the Langley Group and I can sleep at
night. I have a shareholder – one person - that has shown
over and again that he understands manufacturing,
understands how to watch costs, understands how to build a
business and above all understand that a business is about
people, not just numbers. Langley has never sold any of the
companies he has a acquired. He is a “buy, improve, hold”
kind of guy. That gives me a lot of confidence. Knowing that
Mr Langley personally reviews my monthly report makes me
a bit nervous, but in the right way – and I know that he is
doing exactly the same with the seventy or so other business
unit managers in his group, so I’m not alone! “
Possehl, the owner of the Manroland Web business is a very
similar organization to Langley Holdings. “I have known
Possehl for quite some time” remarks George. “They are
active in a range of markets, from semiconductors to
mailing systems to textiles. They are a quick study, and
understand how to play to their strengths.” Manroland
Southern Africa has an agreement with Manroland Web
Systems. “I am very pleased – we like them, and they like us,
and Manroland is the market leader in web presses. No if’s,
and’s or but’s. What’s not to like?”
“Both Possehl and Langley are long term holders. They
understand the need to invest in R&D, the need to give
customers a sense of security to invest in the machinery, the
need to have an effective aftermarket support team.

installed a new flagship ROLAND 700 DirectDrive with coating unit
stated “machine precision and reliability sets aside Manroland
Sheetfed machines from all others”.
The company was established in 1904 by Karl Bromberger and to
this day the company is family-owned. Christof Bromberger, third
generation and Managing Director, said: “Our ISO 9001 and EN
15593 certified company is recognized by its cardboard products in
packaging printing, display and advertising media. The services
provided are mainly CAD, printing, embossing, laminating,
punching, gluing, assembly, logistics and distribution.” With state of
the art machines and various finishing options, customer demands
are met quickly. “We love the challenge to find innovative solutions
to the more unusual requirements and are faithful to our slogan:
‘Tomorrow is today!’ ” he adds.
At the heart of production are the ROLAND presses “For many years,
we have placed our trust in the great packaging printing experience
from our supplier, Manroland. All of our presses have a coating or
double coating units and for years, we installed InlineInspector to
check every single printed sheet. Taking into account the increasing
pressure from the competition and the ever-shorter print runs, we
decided to buy the new ROLAND DirectDrive in May 2012. In
addition to the numerous advantages of the Direct Drive we also
chose the next generation of sheet inspection system. It offers an
even higher resolution with the possibility of PDF reconciliation in
addition to masking. Each printed sheet is therefore controlled
inline.” Bromberger enthuses.
Manroland presses have longevity. The print quality of the press
they sold in exchange for the new DirectDrive was as good as on the
first day of production, after around 150 million printed sheets.
“We can achieve great printing results on our machines which
satisfies our customers’ quality requirements even after many years.
With the continuous competent support by the service team, we
have invested yet again in Manroland”, says Christof Bromberger.
With this recent investment, the 80-year long partnership
continues. “The machine was installed in record-breaking time and

Birds Space Game by Nelostuote Group (Tactic) and Rovio
Entertainment Ltd was assisted by Manroland Sheetfed.
Manroland Sheetfed printed the attractive promotional copies of
the new game ready for the launch which was held at Angry Birds
Land, Särkänniemi Amusement Park in Tampere, Finland on June
07, 2012.
Established in 2003, Rovio Entertainment Ltd is an entertainment
media company, and the creator of the globally successful Angry
Birds franchise. It launched Angry Birds in 2009, which enjoys the
huge popularity worldwide with more than 1 billion downloads to
date. Nelostuote Group (Tactic) has grown into the biggest
international board game supplier and printer in Scandinavia.
Currently it exports its wide range of board games into 40
countries. The launch of the new game is expected to open up new
markets in 70 countries.

believe they could do it because of the extremely tight schedule,
but Manroland puts the customer first and exceeded our

Leading Bulgarian packaging printer, Unipack AD upgrades its
5-color ROLAND 700 HiPrint LTTLV with a non-stop feeder.
In September last year Unipack AD upgraded its existing 5-
color ROLAND 700 HiPrint LTTLV with a non-stop feeder to
increase productivity.
With more than 200 staff, Unipack AD is one of the top three
packaging printing houses in Bulgaria in pre-press, press and
post-press and have been successfully using Manroland
advanced printing technologies for many years, including a 6-
color ROLAND 700 HiPrint LTTLV and InlineFoiler.
The recent installation of the non-stop feeder has substantially
reduced make-ready times; without having to stop the press
while the feeder pile has to be changed gives the press operator
much more time to attend to other tasks such as preparing for
the next job. Overall, productivity is significantly increased with
consistent high print quality guaranteed.

aficionados, Grafica Romiti, has invested in a new ROLAND 706
PLV 1/5 hybrid press to handle UV and conventional inks. This

This innovative partnership combines the promise of
Nanography with the prestigious Manroland Sheetfed brand,
initially giving Manroland Sheetfed's customer the option to
convert existing ROLAND presses to Nanography.
According to chairman and chief executive Benny Landa in trade
press reports at the end of last year, Landa is focusing on delivery

Rhein-Main area, near Frankfurt. The company is engaged in a
wide variety of high-end printed materials with special finishes.
Druckerei is a family owned business founded in 1988 by
Winfried Bender; the company has enjoyed much success over
the years owing to investment in the latest press equipment and
the exemplary turnkey services enjoyed by a loyal and expanding
customer base.

washing the blankets reducing make-ready times by up to 60%. Add

TelePresence, remote service system, saves time, saves moneyManroland Sheetfed introduced TelePresence as a service
product to meet the growing service response expectations.
The speed at which a service department responds is critical.
Rapid response alone is not enough, quality is an absolute
factor as well; reliable detection of the cause of the failure –
if possible at the customer’s first call, the identification of the
right replacement part and whether it is in stock are key
processes which can be improved with telePresence.
In a survey conducted by Manroland, Inc in North America, it
was concluded that customers with access to Manroland’s
TelePresence remote service system for sheetfed presses get
their equipment back into production 93 percent of the time
solely with remote service. Remote repairs are done typically
within hours and sometimes within minutes of initiating a
remote service request through TelePresence.
In addition, when a service technician is required, repairs
requested through the TelePresence system are completed as
much as 80 percent faster because the problem has been
narrowed down to a small number of possible causes. This
allows the technician to arrive with the right tools and parts
needed to fix any of the alternatives.
According to Matt Braun, Director of National Service,
“Manroland was the first press manufacturer to offer remote
service via the internet. The TelePresence system has been a
standard offering for all new Manroland Sheetfed presses
since 2007 and older presses can be retrofitted to accommodate
the valuable and cost-effective service. Nearly 100 percent of the
customers who have utilized this value-added service have
renewed it.“
Braun said the Manroland TelePresence Service, which won the
PIA InterTech Technology Award in 2005, is unlike other remote
diagnostic services in that it provides technicians on the network
with complete access, not just to the main console, but to all of
the computers networked with a modern sheetfed printing
press. For example a Manroland 6-color coater/perfector can be
connected to as many as 26 computers, and remote technicians
can work with all of them as easily as if they were standing next
to the unit in question. As for mechanical components, remote
technicians can see what is happening in various locations by
way of embedded webcams or with the aid of a hand-held video
camera that is provided by Manroland.
Once a local service request has been initiated through
TelePresence, response is fast. It only takes 6 seconds for it to
reach the factory in Offenbach, Germany, where the equipment
is completely identified and its specifications linked over to the
North American Remote Service Center in Westmont, IL. A full-
time staff of remote technicians keeps pace with service
requests as they occur. If specialized expertise is required, factory
technicians in Offenbach may also be brought into a remote
diagnostics session.
Aspects of TelePresence that customers appreciate most include
the ability to show Manroland's remote technicians areas of
concern with the video camera, Manroland's immediate access
to alarm conditions and its ability to control and adjust press
parameters over the internet, and getting responses to
TelePresence service requests at any time of the day.
Today, Manroland provides free access to the TelePresence
service for as long as the press is under warranty. After the
warranty period, the owner can renew for a nominal annual
fee, which covers all of the appropriately equipped presses in
a plant. Some TelePresence users have as many as 7 presses
covered under a single service agreement. Even presses in
adjacent buildings can be covered by one TelePresence
agreement. Customers are free to use TelePresence as often
as needed without any additional charges beyond the fee.
To further improve uptime benefits of the service portal, the
TelePresence concept has been expanded to include a
Maintenance Manager for coordinating press maintenance
schedules and to electronically deliver maintenance
documentation. Since 2011 this capability has been
expanded beyond the manufacturer's original equipment to
include scheduling and documentation for the printer's
custom equipment. The Maintenance Manager can be
extended to all of the Manroland Sheetfed presses in a plant
as long as there is a TelePresence agreement in effect. ■■

In the north-eastern corner of Hessia, in the heart of the scenic
valley of Werratal.
Founded back in 1861, they recently celebrated their 150th
anniversary. Over the years, the company has been an integral part
of the print industry’s many remarkable innovations; Germany’s very
first offset press was introduced there in 1911, followed in 1973 by
another landmark; the first press equipped with UV dryers,
something which has since then, gained a huge following in the
packaging world. This drive for innovation has not diminished
during the intervening years.
Manroland has been supplying ROLAND presses for many decades.
Take for example, the printed sheet count is over 500 million
impressions on the 1996 ROLAND 706 HiPrint; over 420 million
impressions on the 1999 ROLAND 704 HiPrint and 170 million
impressions on the 2007 ROLAND 707LV HiPrint.
A first-time visitor to H.O. Persiehl Wanfried will be impressed
because despite the millions of impressions they are likely to be
overwhelmed by the pristine production facilities. It’s a direct result
of the double-coating ROLAND 700 HiPrint which uses a fast-drying
dispersion varnish specially developed to allow the printing process
to take place without the need for anti-set-off powder and without
any restrictions on the delivery pile height resulting in an
impressively clean working environment without the
typical residue of white powder. ■■
Langley veteran steps downAlfred Rothlaender, 67, the veteran manufacturing man brought in
by Langley Holdings in February to head up Manroland Sheetfed's
headquarters and production location at Offenbach in Germany,
stepped down from the Manroland Sheetfed board at the end of
2012.
"My task here is complete...." commented
Rothlaender. “Herr Langley asked me to step
into Manroland for one year following the
acquisition which I agreed to do so. During
this period no stone has been left unturned
and I am satisfied that the company is now in
good shape" he said.
Speaking at a dinner in December 2012 in Offenbach for
management of the company's over three dozen subsidiaries from
around the world Langley paid tribute to the former MD of Langley's
other divisions' contribution: "I have worked with Alfred for over ten
years and knew that when he agreed to do this the company would
be in good hands. The post-acquisition heavy lifting is over now and
with much thanks to Alfred, it has gone remarkably smoothly. I am
personally very grateful that he agreed to come out of retirement to
help with the transition and very happy that he will continue as a
consultant to the Manroland business in 2013". ■■
