I-105 CORRIDOR SUSTAINABILITY STUDY
STUDY OVERVIEWThe Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG), in coordination with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) is conducting the Interstate 105 (I-105) Corridor Sustainability Study (CSS) to examine the study area from a broad multi-modal perspective. The I-105 CSS will assess freeway and arterial congestion and will also consider additional corridor improvements, such as complete streets concepts, high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes, ExpressLanes, and other advanced operational strategies. The goal is to recommend solutions that would improve air quality, system connectivity and eciency, and reduce emissions, trac congestion and improve safety. The CSS will develop local resources and build upon previous transportation eorts to create an integrated transportation system for the I-105 region.
PROJECT PURPOSEThe I-105 CSS will evaluate all elements of the transportation system within the study area and will employ innovative planning strategies to provide sustainable multi-modal solutions to achieve the following goals and objectives.
Improve ridershipImprove system eciency (operations)Reduce congestion
Mobility
Geographic equityImprove system connectivityIncrease service to Social Equity Focus (SEF) populations
Accessibility & Equity
Reduce collisions and hazardsSafety
Improve system conditions (preservation)State of Good Repair
Improve air quality and public healthReduce emissions
Sustainability
Goals Objectives
SCAG is inviting the public, business leaders and community stakeholders to participate in the study process and provide feedback to the project team. There will be ongoing opportunities for public involvement in the study, including community activities at key milestones and an online survey. For more information about the study or to learn about upcoming opportunities for public participation, please visit the study webpage at scag.ca.gov/105CorridorStudy or email I105CSS@scag.ca.gov.

NEEDDeciencies on the I-105 corridor within the study area include:
Heavily congested corridor (freeway and arterial roads), especially during peak hours
Higher than average accident rates in the Eastbound direction
Recent declines in transit ridership (i.e. Metro Green line)
STUDY AREA HIGHLIGHTS18-mile I-105 corridor includes freeway and adjacent arterial roadways13 cities, plus unincorporated LA County communitiesOver 1.45 million residentsOver 408,000 employeesOver 33,000 businessesApproximately 74% of residents within the Study Area commute to work by car

STUDY AREAThe study area includes the I-105 freeway, a heavily congested corridor spanning 18 miles in southern Los Angeles County, the surrounding street system, and the Metro Green Line light rail, which runs from the City of Redondo Beach to the City of Norwalk. The freeway provides a critical east-west route that directly feeds the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), serves multiple cities and disadvantaged communities and connects four busy north-south interstates: I-405, I-110, I-710, and I-605. Currently, the freeway experiences congestion and some of the arterial roads fail to provide eective alternatives due to right-of-way constraints, numerous trac signals, access conicts, and general congestion.
