World Book Day: Thursday 7th March 2019
Message from Mrs Cottle:
It was lovely to welcome back staff and students this week, looking
relaxed and rested following an unseasonably warm and sunny half
term break. The theme for my assemblies this week has been the FMAT
value of Excellence and I have already seen many examples of
students striving to achieve excellence in an extremely positive start to
the second half of the Spring term.
GCSE examinations are already underway for some Year 11 students
with both Drama practicals and Business Studies exams taking place
this week; for others there are still a few weeks remaining before the
GCSEs get into full swing. The mock examination fortnight beginning
next week will provide a final opportunity to put their knowledge and
skills to the test and identify and address any areas of weakness that may emerge. It is extremely
pleasing to see that students are continuing to take full advantage of the excellent period 6
revision lessons being provided free of charge each day in school. These are highly focused study
sessions delivered by subject experts covering all areas of examination practice which last year’s
cohort found invaluable in supporting and supplementing their home revision programmes. These
sessions will be suspended during the mock examination fortnight to allow the year group to focus
on their mock exam preparation but will resume on Tuesday 19th March.
Supporting the PSHE curriculum on diversity, students in Years 9 and 10 were fortunate to receive an
interesting and informative talk given by a representative from Stonewall who was an extremely
engaging speaker.
Bournville School will be taking part in World Book Day next week with a number of Harry Potter
themed activities happening that promise to be great fun for the students and staff taking part.
Finally, we are very aware of the financial difficulties many families find themselves in and have
teamed up with the Red Box organisation who provide sanitary products free of charge for anyone
who might need them. Students requiring sanitary products can go to the medical room, or one of
the following places: Mrs Yarker’s office, Ms Cross’ office, Mrs Dovey’s classroom, Mrs Meaney’s
classroom, Mr Lowe’s office, the admin office or the admin office.

Punctuality
Students are expected to arrive for 8.35am each morning and punctuality is an important life skill
that we aim to embed. The pastoral team will continue to support students with strategies to arrive
to school on time. There is a continued focus on swift movement to lessons, particularly after break
and lunch.
Please check your child's diary and ensure they have their timetable and are ready for the school
day. All students are expected to be ready to move onto their next lesson as quickly as possible
during the school day and ready to make the most of every minute of learning. Students that have
3 or more lates to lesson in a week face a one hour detention on a Friday afternoon. We will be
sending a 'Lost Minutes' report home to some families of students who have persistently poor
punctuality to lessons to highlight the impact of lost learning time.
Finally, we continue to issue penalty fines against families who do not send their child to school
every day. We will continue to challenge through legal processes those parents and carers who do
not yet understand their responsibility to support the school and ensure their child attends school
every day. It is your responsibility to ensure your child attends every day. We will work with you to
support you to ensure your child attends every day. If you are concerned at all, please speak to
Elaine Tisdell, our Safeguarding officer, or email her at: tisdell.e@bournville.bham.sch.uk
Attendance
We continue to encourage all students to strive for 100%
attendance. This half term, we are again offering the
prize draw of TWO GT Racer bikes on the last day of the
half term. Well done to Joshua and Aliyah (pictured
below) who won bikes last half term with 100%
attendance. Each student with 100% attendance for
last half term has been awarded an Attendance Griffin
sticker and we would also like to congratulate those
students whose attendance improved last half term -
those students have been awarded a certificate to
recognise their dedication to improvement.
To qualify to be in the draw for the bikes, you need to
have 100% attendance for the period 25th February -
12th April 2019: 35 days of school. Who will take them
away next time?
We will announce the winner of our latest prize on Friday 12th April. It is important that your child is
in school every day to be in with a chance of winning this amazing prize which is worth around
£500.
Medical:
If your child has a medical condition, please contact Ms L Bladen by email
Bladen.l@bournville.bham.sch.uk to arrange to discuss your child’s requirements as appropriate.
If your child has prescribed medicines, please contact Ms Tisdell (see above) to arrange school
provision as appropriate. Students must not bring medicines (including paracetamol) to school
that have not been prescribed by a doctor.
Bullying
Please be aware that we have the S.H.A.R.P System (School Help Advice Reporting System) on our
website. This is an online reporting system which can be used to report any incidents, such as
bullying, which occur within the school and the local community. We actively encourage our
students to report any incidents to us.

28th February 2019
Dear Parent/Carer,
We would like to share with you some information that will be important for your child in the next
few weeks.
Year 11 Mock Exam Arrangements
Our core priority is learning at Bournville School. With this in mind, our Year 11 students are about to
undergo a period of mock exams for two weeks beginning on 4th March 2019. This will mean that
certain areas of the school such as Elgar Foyer will be out of bounds to all students so that the Year
11 students are undisturbed for the duration of their exams. It is important that you speak to your
child about this in order to ensure they can get to lessons in the Elgar building quickly, using the
route through the Elgar ‘Sun’ corridor instead. All Year 11 students are expected to be on time
every day throughout this crucial period.
Behavour Policy – Procedural Update
Secondly, we would like to advise you of a procedural update to our behaviour policy that will
begin on 11th March. Currently, failure to attend two consecutive detentions results in a day in our
Re-Focus room. We have a small minority of students who this affects. However, we would like to
now replace this sanction with a 90 minute senior staff detention on a Friday. This will ensure
students still get to make the most of learning time by being in lessons but still face a serious
sanction for such defiance. We will be writing to the parents and carers of students who may be
affected by this separately next week.
Hoax ‘MoMo’ App
You may be aware through social media about this worrying ‘trend’ app that is currently being
sensationalised by the media and shared widely on social media with parents expressing their
alarm. Essentially, this is a hoax but, naturally, some children may be frightened and worried by it. It
is important that you speak to your child about it. Overleaf is some guidance about the app and
how to speak to your child about it.
Yours faithfully,
Mr J Barton
