INTERVISION Mentoring prison teachers

(GRUNDVIG M_TIPE)

GOAL: Exchange of information and experiences on teaching, education and generally working with groups in detention.

SUBJECTS: Volunteers, teachers and trainers from extracurricular and European programs,

representatives of NGOs, that implement specific interventions in the juvenile detention.

METHOD:

1. Informing the director of the prison about the goal of the intervention.

2. Collection of the personal data of the volunteer – trainers that come into contact with young

detainees at the time.

3. Informing the volunteer trainer/ teacher about the goal and the importance of the meeting. Asking

them to prepare a 10’ presentation of their work.

4. Design a small questionnaire recording difficulties and proposals for improvement of their work and

assessment of this first meeting.

5. Hold the meeting ( Presentations of their work from those involved, discussion and completion of a

questionnaire)

6. Informing all the parties interested (Director, Chief of the guard..) of the results of the meeting.

7. Drafting a presentation (in English) for the meeting in Hungary.

CONCLUSIONS • The meeting took place in a very good atmosphere• Every participant presented his work with the minor inmates • Everybody stressed the positive and fruitful interaction with the inmates• Help from the direction of the penalty institution • Problems occur with the strict roles of the detention center

– Waiting times in order to enter the prison– Delay in arriving of the students – No place to store something until the next meeting – A lot of items are not allowed inside (colors, scissors, sharpener..)– No heat in winter – Penalties for members of the workshop ( working deprivation, isolation) so they can’t participate in

the group setting • Financial problems

– Transport costs – Need for material (books, equipment)– Raising number of poor minors – Creation of a book with the paintings of the minor inmates

• Two of the five invited representatives filled in and mailed the questionnaire.
