Experience the World
A powerful metaphor This "fork in the road" is a powerful metaphor. Choosing your high school
is a pivotal rite of passage. If you have been careful and systematic in
your search you will have gained insight into the power of the
International Baccalaureate Diploma and le baccalauréat.

Bilingual candidates who are interested in our parallel French Section are
invited to attend a special French Section Open House at 6 pm on
November 6 in our Arts Pavilion.
The gold-standard
In the previous newsletter we let the numbers speak for themselves. We
cited last year's record low 5.6% admit rate for Stanford; noting that
recently the admit rates for IB Diploma candidates have been around
15%.
The operative phrase at this month's IB Higher Education Symposium
hosted by Stanford was "The IB is recognized as the gold-standard in
preparing students for success in higher education." Our own 2013
Valedictorian, Andrew Beckman, who began his studies at Stanford this
year, was an invited keynote speaker.
Much more to the college experience than
just getting in
The IB Diploma is nothing less than a two-year, mini degree program
undertaken in 11th and 12th grade. Its power lies in an integrated
experience which is designed to educate the whole human being.
There is so much more to the college experience than just getting in. The
top colleges love IB Diploma students because they perform so well and
become academic leaders once they are actually there. Colleges know that
IB students have not been burdened by busy work and rote tasks and come
already prepared for the upper level thinking, sophisticated writing, global
mindedness and independent research skills that lie ahead.
A subversive philosophy class in high
school! IB Diploma students are rare in taking a subversive philosophy class in
high school (known as TOK). Here they confront some deep and timeless
questions and are challenged to take a step back and think. This means
that they truly own their knowledge. They do not swallow conventional
ideas, or prepackaged opinions of peers or authority figures, without
demanding evidence and serious critical thinking. No wonder the colleges
like this.
As you grapple with the metaphorical the fork in the road, you and your
families should continue to keep in mind that the most powerful argument
for coming to International High School is gaining access to the IB
Diploma Experience. We are the only San Francisco school offering this
program. Investigate the "road not traveled" and let it change everything.
Unrivaled Performing Arts
Not surprisingly, there is quite a buzz around our controversial musical
Cabaret which opens on November 14. Contact our Admission office for
advance tickets.
A major highlight for 2013-2014 is our Awaiting Dawn project. Renownedinternational theater maker, Moise Touré is leading this ground-breaking,initiative bringing together students, faculty, artists and thinkers from withinand beyond our school community. Together they are exploring theconnections between art, education and democracy.
The goal is ambitious: to create a culminating event as rich, relevant and
potent - in form and in content - for a 21st century community as a Greek
tragedy would have been in Athens in 300 B.C.
