The Annual Youth Leadership Summit was held in August at
the University of Utah. Attending were 115 youth between
the ages of 16 – 18 who are in state custody due to neglect
or abuse and who are preparing to age out of foster care.
This Summit, sponsored by Utah State Division of Child and
Family Services, included a dynamic keynote speaker from
Texas who had aged out of foster care and was eventually
able to create a wonderful life for himself. He also provided
an interactive two-hour workshop.
In addition to the speaker, youth enjoyed two days filled
with building new friendships through team-building activi-
ties, learning about services that will be available to assist
them, eating great meals, dancing, having lots of fun and
practicing living in student dorms.
The Christmas Box International participated by providing
duffle bags and hygiene kits as well as games, prizes, pizza
and some engaging volunteers! The youth were given great
tools to prepare them for success as they get ready to leave
state’s custody and transition to their adult life.

After much planning, remodeling began Sept 29th at the Salt Lake Christmas Box House to
create a new Atrium Activity Center through a generous donation of $27,500 from the
Royal Bank of Canada (RBC). A computer lab will be provided for this new space through
grants from the Utah Families Foundation and Larry H. and Gail Miller Family Foundation.

The motto of The Christmas Box International
is every child deserves a childhood. Part of
any childhood should be the opportunity to

More Office SpaceRecently, we were able to relocate the
administrative offices for The Christmas Box
International to the Salt Lake Christmas Box House.
This feels like coming home for the staff at CBI. Salt
Lake County, which was given the SL CBH after it was built by
CBI in 1998, will provide offices for administrative use.
NPS and the Farmer Family have generously donated for over three
years our former administrative office space at the Globus Relief building in
Salt Lake City. This space will continue to be used for our Project Office
where we will be able to work with volunteers on different projects. NPS
also provides warehouse space and support for the short term storage of
donations and event materials.

2010 Kids Fest 5k Fun RunAs part of the ongoing Salt Lake Board of Realtors Kids Festfundraising campaign for The Christmas Box International, a fun5K race and children’s “marathon” was held on Saturday morn-ing, September 25th at Sugar House Park. The Jazz Bearand Princess Amerah joined in for sending off the runnersand walkers.
Music was provided by the talented teens of the School of Rock.Author and CBI founder Richard Paul Evans spoke to the crowd and assisted Coldwell Banker Utah President Dan Christensen in awarding the race medals and tro-phies. The Kids Fest events are now in their 14th year of providing community support for theChristmas Box House childrens’ shelters through the generous work of members of the SLBOR. KidsFest committee member Ryan Kay chaired this first year of the 5K Run which is sure to continue in pop-ularity for the community.
On Friday, September 10th, Melanie White was presented the "Child Advocate
of the Year Award” by Prevent Child Abuse Utah. She was nominated for this award
because of her efforts with The Christmas Box International (CBI). The award pres-
entation was made at the PCAU gala held at the LaCaille Restaurant in Sandy, Utah.
Melanie is a Sales Associate
for Coldwell Banker and has
been a tireless CBI volunteer
for the past ten years. She
most recently served as
2008/2009 Salt Lake Board of
Realtors Kids Fest Committee
Chair and 2008-2010 Kids Fest
Golf Tournament Co-Chair.
These successful carnival and
golf tournament fundraising
events generate a sizeable do-
nation to assist in CBI’s mission of supporting children who have been abused or
neglected.
Congratulations Melanie! CBI is grateful for your dedicated service. You
have made an incredible difference in the lives of children and youth served
by our programs.
ABC4 and Timpanogos Harley Davidson in Orem sponsored Roland’s Ride

Motorcycles BringDonationsOn Oct 17, the
ABATE motorcycle
group arrived on 75
bikes to deliver
$500 worth of
school supplies,
toys, books and hy-
giene items as part
of their annual
fundraising project for the Salt Lake Christmas Box
House. The group’s fundraising activities included
auctioning several custom painted pumpkins at dif-
ferent locations. They also worked with several
other individuals and groups to raise over $1000 in
cash and $500 in activity passes for the kids.
The children, teens and staff from the Christmas Box
House and the Teen Group Homes were able to
greet the group when they came and get a close-up
look or even sit on the motorcycles. The children
and teens were then able to choose some items that
they needed from the donations ABATE delivered.
Thanks again for being such a wonderful partner
with CBI for the kids!
Lifestart BoxesIn July, as part of the CBI LIfestart Initiative and with
the help of dozens of volunteers, we were able to as-
semble and send out 630 Lifestart Boxes for youth
who at the age of 18 age out of foster care. This is
the largest number to date of these move-in kits that
CBI provides annually to youth in Utah, Idaho, Ne-
vada, Arizona, Wyoming and Colorado. The kits con-
tain bedding, linens, dishes, utensils, kitchen items, a
tool kit, hygiene kit and a first aid kit to help these
youth transition to adult living on their own. Annu-
ally some 28,000 youth across the nation age out of
care. These youth generally have significantly poorer
outcomes than their peers of the same age, so this is
just one phase of the CBI Lifestart Initiative meant to
help their start in adult living be more successful.
Several major donors helped in the Lifestart Box ef-
fort. The LDS Church Humanitarian Services provided
several items for the project, the Lynne Lybbert Chil-
dren’s Fund held an online auction for St. George
Marathon slots to raise money for this project, NPS
provided the warehouse space and support for the
project, and Swift Transportation shipped the Lifes-
tart Boxes to the different states.
