A new way of approaching post-disaster assessments

VAM is testing a new approach in Nepal for post-disaster emergency assessments, focused on

speed and usability for immediate programmatic decision-making.

Phase 1 - Data preparedness

VAM ensured that the necessary data (GIS layers and

demographic data) was readily available as soon as the

earthquake occurred. This was done by establishing a regional

Spatial Data Infrastructure system - a central repository where

the spatial and tabular data on Nepal was stored.

Phase 2 - Initial 72 hour emergency assessment

72 hour assessments provide an overview of which areas are

most impacted by the earthquake, and how many people are

likely to be in need of immediate food assistance. VAM carried out three 72 hour assessments

released on April 26, 27 and 29.

Phase 3 - Updating of the initial

assessment

The understanding of the impacts of the

earthquake continue to evolve as new

information is collected. WFP and the

Government, through the Nepal food

security monitoring system (NeKSAP),

released three rapid assessments on May

1, May 4 and May 8. Subsequently, a

household food security assessment and

NeKSAP food security phase classification

(see map) were conducted between 8-20

May to inform the food security response.

Tablet-based data collection and the eWIN

data management software were used.
