Bio-Mi EU projects - timeline
Bio-Mi EU projects – BIC membership
Strong connection with Large Industries,
SMEs, RTOs and Universities across EU and
non-EU, Eastern European partners and
other BIC (Biobased Industries Consortium)
full and associate members
Partnerships with strong industrial leaders
such as: Novamont, Aquafil, H&M, Total-
Corbion, Vaude, Su dzucker, Barila,
Novozymes, Unilever, BASF, Braskem,
Repsol etc.
BIC members recognized our potential and
ideas based on strong dedication to
bioeconomy sector
Bio-Mi EU projects
Benefits:
Internationalisation of our business
Confirmation of excellence and competitiveness
A chance to work with some of the best and renominated RTOs in EU as well as
Large Industry members
An opportunity to share expertise and knowledge in placing products on the
market
An opportunity for us to implement new technologies and processes which are
then used for obtaining new products with high added value
Building Bio-Mi portfolio of IP (patents, industrial secrets and know-how)
Easier placement of our bio-based products on local and EU market
How to become a member of consortia
In order to network, you have to be present at important bioeconomy
events (international conferences, meetings of BIC (if member), H2020
info days, etc.)
Invest in the internationalization of your business and your ideas
As an associate member you have a chance to get the best possible
networking and meet "big bioeconomy players" and companies via
face2face meetings
Take the opportunity to participate in consortia and everything is up to
you!

Opportunities and obstacles for developing
bioeconomy in Croatia
OPPORTUNITIES:
Re-building of industry infrastructure in line with circulareconomy demands
We should build up and use our traditionally strong chemistry sector which is in some way a branch of biotechnology
Marginalised and unused land represents a huge advantage, but at the same time we lack clear policy and reforms in that area
Use feedstock that is available to us, such as OFMSW (Organic Fraction Municipal Solid Waste); wood waste i.elignocellulosic feedstock; crop wastes; residues from thefood chain sector (up to 50% of world food in the wholechain end up in waste); waste water and sludge, marine biomass in general
Possibility of synergies between ESIF and Horizon 2020
Opportunities and obstacles for developing
bioeconomy in Croatia
OBSTACLES:
Lack of funding
ESIF is not oriented to the innovative SMEs
Lack of transparency – 3 years for evaluation of theproposals
Bad environment for green investments- Virtually nonexistent
S3 Smart specialization- Bioeconomy is marginalized
Financial limitations – „bank scissors”
Lack of strategies especially for bioeconomy and green sector in general
Red tape – It takes years to obtain all permits
Very slow public sector
There is no dialog between us and the institutions
High price of land/ High price of old refinery facilities

• Since 2013 and our
first FP7 project
preparation until
now, overall, we
participated in 14 EU
funded projects.
• We believe 14 EU
projects speak for us
and show our
experience and
experise in this area,
EC recognized us as
reliable partner and
funded with almost 4
million Euros
• We will continue with
our project work and
this number can only
grow.

TOTAL – OVER 90 MIL €
2 beneficiaries –
3,75 mil to Croatia
With these funds, we wanted further to
develop our blend formulation and bring
something new to the market.
What is here new and innovative?
Our research work is based on all types of polymers, i.e. depending on the final application
(which can be innumerable) we can create a blend formulation so that the final product has
the best performance for its functionality.
This formulation can beat current market price for 10-20 % and still bring profit.
What can we do?
• After HAMAG BICRO valuated our project like „it does not meet quality requirements” we
are looking forward to see the winners (funded projects) so we can learn from the best
in Croatia in innovation
• continue with EU programmes (Directly under EC, not Croatian evaluation )
• invest own money or find investitor for further development and boosting capacities
• move our R&D center and production facility to Slovenia or Italy where bioeconomy is not
so neglected

Too expensive consultants for writing a proposal,
big players are mostly winning in Croatia, we are
