1 Introduction 1.1 A comprehensive induction programme is of fundamental importance to building
positive relationships with new staff when they join the organisation. It welcomes people, helps them to settle in and to understand the culture and values of the organisation.
1.2 It sets standards and ensures that new staff have clear terms of reference on which
to build their knowledge and motivation to carry out their roles as quickly and effectively as possible, thereby contributing to the quality of patient care. It also provides health and safety reassurances for the organisation.
1.3 Corporate induction events will be provided for all new staff. They will be
supplemented by local induction arrangements. These local arrangements will

2
have a core requirement but will also be flexible to be adapted where necessary to meet the needs of the individual, local team, service or department.
2 Process for Recruitment and Induction of Bank Nurses 2.1 Individuals recruited to the Nurse Bank follow a different process to those,
employed to permanent fixed term contracts by Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust (the Trust).
2.2 A bank nurse does not officially join the Bank until they have fully completed the
induction process and commenced their first shift (Appendix 1). 2.3 All bank nurses attend the Trust’s Corporate Induction Programme (See Appendix
1 of CNTW(HR)01 – Induction Policy) followed by a further one day course covering Moving and Handling of Patients and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (Appendix 4) and receive a welcome letter (Appendix 5).
2.4 Bank Nurses are then given a Local Induction with the Bank Nurse Co-ordination
Team during which they complete a specific Local Induction Checklist, either for Qualified Staff (Appendix 3) or unqualified staff (Appendix 2).
2.5 This information is held by the Nurse Bank Office and a monthly list of those
completing the Local Induction Process is forwarded to Training and Development to enable records to be maintained.
2.6 Nurse Bank staff when they undertake a shift at any new ward would then complete
an Agency / Bank Nurse Induction Shift Checklist which is held by the receiving ward, with a copy given to the bank nurse.
3 Maintaining Compliance 3.1 Information on attendance at the two induction events and the completion of the
Local Induction is recorded and monitored by Workforce Directorate and compliance reports provided to Workforce Training and Development Sub Group.

INTRODUCTORY SHIFT This introductory shift aims to introduce the new Nurse Bank Worker to the working environment, to colleagues and other workers, to policies and procedures, and codes of conduct etc. The introductory shift takes place following attendance on the Trusts Induction Course. It has been arranged on a ward/unit, by taking into consideration your preferences (where possible) to work in certain environments. The introductory shift has been allocated by Nurse Bank Admin and you will meet with the nurse in charge of the ward when duties commence. You will be allocated a supervisor for the duration of the shift who will also offer you ongoing support. You will be welcomed and orientated to the ward and given a brief outline of ward philosophy, culture and given information on your expected role as a nurse bank support worker. An established / experienced support worker will also be allocated to you who is willing to provide informal support and a “buddy “link up whilst you are working in this care area. The supervisor will explain the contents of the local induction and the additional Nurse Bank checklist which you will both be required to sign and return to the Nurse Bank office. The Nurse Bank new ward induction and local induction sheets should always be completed when you attend a fresh ward, and staff there may also provide you with their local induction as wards differ considerably and it is important that you are familiar with their working practices and surrounding. During your introductory shift you will be able to:
Discuss with supervisor, qualified staff and/or support workers
Watch activities and ask questions
Be provided with information in written form
Be observed by a mentor/qualified staff
Visit to clinical area, ward and department
Undertake specific ward related training – e.g. use of their hoists
Shadow your ‘buddy’ link up nurse If you feel you require any support, guidance, advice, or training etc please raise these matters with your supervisor and together identify measures and a timescale to achieve these. You should revisit these items regularly and raise them for attention on any ward where you have been allocated to work. You will also be required to provide 3 self- review reports during your first year as a Bank Support Worker which must be given to a member of staff to verify, who has worked with you before and is employed in a nursing capacity at Band 5 or above.

Dear I am pleased to welcome you to the Nurse Bank. The Nurse Bank operates to provide short term cover for shifts. You are not an employee of the Trust and we have no obligation to provide you with work. Similarly you are not obliged to accept any shifts. You will be paid at the rate of £ per annum pro rata.
As a Nurse Bank Worker, you are required to book your availability for work through the SMART eHL system. A demonstration of how the web based system operates was given/will be given at Nurse Bank Induction and you are able to access this through the internet either from your home or within a Trust environment. The Trust will match your availability with shifts requested to be filled, but is under no obligation to offer you work. You need not accept work that is offered to you. The Trust will remove you from the bank list if you do not undertake any shifts in a 6 month period.
You should be aware that qualified Ward staff (and in some instances authorised Ward Clerks) that request and confirm shifts will have access to your Name and Payroll Number for the purpose of viewing and confirming shifts you work. If you are concerned about this please contact me immediately as unfortunately we will be unable to offer you bank shifts without your agreement.
You should keep your availability up to date at all times on eHL. You may be asked to work at any of the Trust’s sites, and the system does allow you to select ward preferences.
You will be paid for shifts worked on the 28th of the following month.
Your pro rata holiday is 5.6 weeks’ paid annual leave per annum including bank holidays. Payment for this is calculated on days worked and paid quarterly in February, May, August and November.
If you are unable to work owing to sickness and have worked for a minimum of 8 weeks prior to sickness, dependent upon your earnings, you may be entitled to Statutory Sick Pay. This will be paid provided you have notified us of your sickness absence which has been certified by a medical certificate. You must not undertake any bank shifts when signed off sick.

You are expected to familiarise yourself with Trust Policies and Procedures which are available on the Trust intranet and adhere to them at all times.
You must keep your training up to date in line with Trust requirements. Qualified Nurses cannot take charge of a ward unless they have completed a Trust preceptorship.
The Nurse Bank manager reserves the right to prevent you undertaking duties at any time.
Owing to the nature of your work, this is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders rules. You are therefore not entitled to withhold information about any past convictions, cautions or reprimands which otherwise might be considered ‘spent’. If you are formally cautioned, arrested on any charge or served with a summons or a criminal charge, caution or reprimand, you must inform the Nurse Bank Manager immediately. The Trust will remove you from the Nurse Bank List if you fail to declare relevant information.
You must complete and sign a declaration statement and will be subject to an annual enhanced check by the Criminal Records Bureau. If do not participate in this annual check the Trust will remove you from the Nurse Bank List.
If you have any queries about declarations to be made please contact a Workforce Advisor on 0191 223 2848.
You must uphold confidentiality at all times regarding any information available to you regarding patients, staff or business. You must always respect the confidential nature and security of this information, and your attention is drawn particularly to the need to protect personal data in accordance with the principles of the Data Protection Act If you are required by statute to have state professional registration to practice within the NHS, you must be so registered and provide proof of registration in such form as stipulated by the Trust. It is a condition of remaining on the Nurse Bank that your registration is current and maintained.
Any uniform, protective clothing, keys or other items that may be issued to you, remain the property of the Trust and must be returned when you leave the Nurse Bank. Any loss/cost of replacement incurred by the Trust due to failure to return Trust property may result in costs being deducted from monies owed to you by the Trust.
You have a responsibility for safeguarding and protecting adults and children from abuse, regardless of the setting in which the care takes place. It is your responsibility to be aware of relevant policies which are on the Trust intranet. You must undertake training in order to maintain your skills. Front line practitioners may require support in line with local procedures and should contact the Ward Manager or Nurse Bank Manager in such instances.
If you require further information please do not hesitate to contact the Nurse Bank Manager.
