JAMMU, Aug 27 :Padmashree Geeta Chandran, acelebrated artist of Indian classi-

cal dance Bharatnatyam gave alecture cum dance demonstrationat Heritage School on 27thAugust 2015, which was theconcluding session of her 4 daysession with schools.

For last few days she hasbeen visiting schools in Jammucity under the aegis of the SpicMacay - an eminent nationallevel organization known forproliferating awareness aboutIndian classical forms in danceand music among the youth ofIndia.

The dance recital began withthe auspicious ceremony of lamplighting and the dignitaries pres-ent on the occasion were Dr.Sapna Sangra, co-ordinator ofJ&K chapter of SPIC MACAYand Dr. Seema Rohmetra, co-

ordinator for Jammu region.All classical forms of art are

an important source of not onlyaesthetic values but also enhancevalues of life, mind, soul andspirituality. It is the awareness ofthese values which the culturalorganization of Spic Macayenvisions and aims to spreadthrough our heritage of classicalmusic and dance amongst theyouth of today.

Padmashree Geeta Chandrancaptivated the eager audiencewith her enthralling performanc-es which were punctuated withher verbal explanations of threemajor tenets of classicism,namely bhawa, raga and taalwhich is also the genesis of theterm 'Bharatnatyam'.

Her dance performanceswhich were highly emotive andengaging were based on classicalthemes mainly related to LordShiva & Krishna. She was ablysupported by a highly talentedteam of artistes with K.Venkateshwar as the lead vocal-ist, S. Shankar on Mridangamand Rohit Prasanna on flute andher disciple, Ms. Radhika, onnattuvangam, who also gave agraceful dance performance.

An interactive session wasalso held during which the ebul-lient students asked questions tothe danseuse who most patientlyanswered the queries of the stu-dents with all the grace.

A few students also got theopportunity to share the stagewith Padmashree GeetaChandran and it was a momentwhich would be etched in theirmemories for long.

The Vice-Principal, Dr.,Gautam Guha expressed hisgratitude to Padmashree GeetaChandran for providing theHeritageans the opportunity toexperience the richness of beau-ty of Indian classical danceforms. He also opined that therewas a dire need of exposing ouryoung generation to such classi-cal forms for them to make bet-ter choices for learning in life.

Fourteen teams representingtheir schools participated in theprestigious competition.

After the Inter school match-es, the Prize DistributionCeremony was held today tofelicitate the enthusiastic Footballplayers from various Schools.

The chief guest, Shiv KumarSharma Joint Secretary (Jammuand Kashmir State SportsCouncil) graced the occasionwith his presence.

Rajesh Sumbaria, ace foot-baller and coach was the guest ofhonour.

The final match was playedbetween MHAC Nagbani andJodhamal Public School, whichwas won by MHAC NagbaniSchool. Jodhamal Public Schoolwas declared the 1st runners-upand GD Goenka PublicSchool was declared the secondrunners- up. Sahil Kumar ofMHAC Nagbani School wasadjudged as the top scorer andKajal Singh of Nagbani wasadjudged as best player.

To commemorate this festivala "Rakhi" making competitionwas organised. Children partici-pated with great enthusiasm andexhibited their creative skills byusing different material like stars,colourful flowers, sparkles & dif-ferent waste material.

About 120 girls students fromclass -III to Class-IX participatedand showcased their creativity bymaking designer 'Rakhi' for thecompetition. Traditional 'Rakhi'designs were the major attractionof the competition.

In senior group : 1st , 2nd and3rd prize went to Mansi ,Manisha and Sana . Kajal , van-shika and Anandika got consola-tion prizes.

SRINAGAR, Aug 27: Acricket tournament organized byarmy in south Kashmir'sBehibagh village of Shopian dis-trict concluded today, a defencespokesman said.

The defence spokesman saidthe tournament was organized tomeet the local aspirations of thelocal youth.

"The tournament stretchedover a period of 68 days and sawparticipation of 87 teams fromKarewa region of Kulgam districtand Shopian district. Besides theparticipants the tournament alsowitnessed a large number of spec-tators, who defied all norms tocheer up their teams," thespokesman said.

He said the final match wasplayed between Landoora andMohamandpora teams at

Behibagh army camp which wasattended by almost 800 locals, 30civil and military dignitarieswhich include SSP Kulgam, DCShopian, DSP Shopian, DSPKulgam, ASP (Operations)Shopian and IB Officer.

The Meet was organized inUnder-14 and Under-19 cate-gories and 12 teams participatedin it.

Certificates and medals weredistributed among the positionholders by the Principal of theSchool, Dr R Prasad.

KV Suranussi, KV 1Pathankot and KV 1 Udhampurstood first, second and thirdrespectively in Under-19 catego-ry, while in Under-14 category,KV 4 Jallanhar claimed first posi-tion, KV 2 Udhampur baggedsecond position and the thirdplace went to KV 1 Udhampur.

The players were selected forthe camp on the occasion andwere given guidelines about theschedule.
