NooneatthehuntingcampwantedtosleepinthesameroomwithBubbabecausehesnoredsoloud.Theotherguysdrewstrawseachdaytoseewhohadtobunkwithhim. The fellow who drew thefirst short straw came to breakfast the next morningwithhiseyesbloodshotandhishairfrizzed.

“Itwasawful,”hereported.“I didn’t sleep a wink. Withall the snoring, I just sat upallnightandwatchedBubbasleep.” After the second night,anotheroftheguyscametobreakfastwithhiseyesblood-shotandhishairfrizzed. “Itwasterrible,”hereport-ed. “I didn’t sleep a wink. Achainsawisn’tasloudasBub-ba’ssnoring.I justsatupallnightandwatchedhimsleep.” Thethirdnight,abigdudewithalongbeardandlotsoftattooshaddrawntheshortstraw.Hecame tobreakfastthenextmorningallrefreshedafteragreatnight’ssleep. “Howdidyoudoit,”theoth-erswantedtoknow. “Ijustwalkedinthere,gaveBubbaagoodnightkissandpattedhimonthebehind,”thebigmansaid.“Bubbajustsatupallnightandwatchedme

sleep.” You may remember fromyour Bible reading a timewhenthedisciplesweresit-tingupwideawakewhileJe-susslept.Insteadofthesoundof snoring, it was a violentstormthathadthemawake.The boat was being tossedabout.Waveswerecrashingin. “Andhisdisciplescametohimandawokehim,saying,Lord,saveus:weperish.Andhesaithuntothem,Whyareyefearful,Oyeoflittlefaith?Then he arose and rebukedthe winds and the sea, andtherewasgreatcalm”(Mat-thew8:24-26). Youknow,therewasnosaf-erplaceforthedisciplestobethaninaboatwithJesus,eveninthemidstofastorm.WhatcouldwepossiblyhavetofearwhenJesusiswithus? But we can all probably

identify with the disciples.We’ve all spent sleeplessnightsupworryingaboutonethingoranother.Stormscomeintoourlivessoonerorlater.When they do, we need totrustthatJesusisthereforus. In 1735, the famouspreacherJohnWesleywasonthe same ship with a groupofMoravianimmigrantswhowereinthemiddleofawor-ship service when a violentstormhit.TheMoravianscon-tinuedpraisingGodthrough-out,evenwithwavescrashingacrossthedeck. Wesley wrote in his di-ary that he was terrified, but theMoraviansweren’tatallafraid.Theirfaith,shininginthat storm, had a profoundimpactonWesley.Hewantedwhattheyhad. Wouldn’titbewonderfulifallofussofullytrustedinGodthat we could worship dur-

ingthestormsthatcomeintoour lives and that we couldliedownandsleepinsteadofpacing the floors with worry. Youprobablyknowlotsofbelievers who rest comfort-ably in the Lord no matterwhat’sgoingonaroundthem…unlessthey’reinahuntingcampwithasnoringBubba. IwentdowntoadeercampinArkansas inNovembertohunt with a great group offellows.Whetherornottheysnored, I couldn’t tell you. Ifellasleepassoonasmyheadhitthepillow.Buttherewassome evidence that I mighthavesnored,becauseseveralof those guys showed up tobreakfastwithbloodshoteyesandfrizzledhair. Never drive over a downed power line or drive through water that is touching the line.

If you see a downed power line, notifythe local authorities immediately.

BYoung505@Outlook.Com Hogkillingtimeintheearlysix-tiesusuallycameintheNovember-Decembertimeframe.Theweatherneeded to be about 20 degrees orcolder. As long as I can remember,DadandmyUncleBevalwayskilledhogseveryyear. Dadbeganthedayabout5:00a.m.when he built a fire in the scalding box.Theboxwasusedforscaldingthehogsinpreparationforscrapingorremovingthehair. Dadtookcareofthekillingofthehogs with his .22 rifle. There was no squealfromthepigwiththisgun. IthoughtitwasanexcitingtimebecauseIgottohelpscrapethehog.Thescaldingboxwasalongtrough,wherethehogwasplacedinscaldinghotwaterwithchainsunderit.Theworkersrotatedthechainsbackandforthinthewatertoinsureallthehairwascoveredandscaldedandreadyforthescrape.Afterthescaldingwasdone, the hog was flipped upon the woodenboardpanel toscrapeandclean.Itwasanastyjob;butIdidn’tcare,Iwasakid. Oncethehogwasscraped,itwas

hoisted by a pulley onto a tree forwashingandgutting.Thesmellypro-cessofguttingthehog,withentrailsstreaminginthechillyair,wasnotforthefaintheartedorsomeonewithaweakstomach. Once the hog had been guttedandwashed, theprocessofcuttingthemeatstarted.Theorgansmeatswereremovedandsetasideincoldwaterforfriedliverandotherparts.Themeatwascut intoporkchops,backbones,tenderloinsandribs.Wealwayskilledtwohogsandprocessedoneforporkchopsandoneforten-derloin. Thefatwastrimmedforlardfromalltheparts,andhamstringsandtheleanmeatwereusedforsausage.Thehams, shoulders, jowl bacon, porkbellys,andmiddlingswerelaidoutontablesinthesmokehouseandchilledfor the night; then salted the nextmorning. The next few days werespentgrindingsausage.Wemixedourownspicesusingingredientssuchassage,redpepper,blackpepperandsalt.MomandIwouldpatonepoundofsausageineachbagtofreeze. Dad enjoyed making the sousemeat(headcheese) fromthehog’shead,andhepickledthehog’sfeet.I lovedthesousemeatoncrackerswithalittlemustard.But,itisbadforyourbloodpressure!Anotherbloodpressurespikerwascracklings;fromtherenderingofthelard--theyaregood,too. WhatIrememberthebestwasthetasteoffreshtenderloinforsupper,freshfromthecastironfryingpan,atop a cat head biscuit with gravy.Nothingtastedbetter.Youjustcan’tgetanystore-boughttenderlointhattastynowadays. Theonlythingtomatchitwouldcomeafewmonthslaterintheformoffriedcountryham,redeyegravy,cornbreadhoecakes,wiltedlettuceandgreenonions.Whatafeast!
