Altho'ugli the .'World war ended 20 years ,ago thou sands of individuals continue lo make a living from theba ttlefields of Fra nce. In the Somme, near Albert , workers find huge amounts of copper , lead and iron. Allthe recovered shells and bombs are first sent -to an isolated spot near a special factory, where they arestored. Every safety precaution is taken to avoid injuries from live shells and bombs, and constant prac-tice has insured a minimum of accidents. In 1937 more than 4,000,000 pounds of , war material was removedfrom the Somme area-alone. Left: Nicknamed "The Negus," this shell hunter is typical of the Frenc h work-er in the battle field. His divining rod , which probes the eart h, tells him the type of bur ied war material.
