So what are Engineers? Biomedical Aeronautical Civil

Chemical Electrical Mechatronics

We are creators! Designing to meet the needs of the people.

So what are the basic Human Needs?

Clean water

Sanitation

Shelter

Food

And this is what we are looking at today.

Types of houses in different developing countries:

They all look different though. Why? Where were they built?

Other restrictions?

For example, moving around: Transitory Houses

Have you seen homes like these before?

Why do people live in homes like these?

Do you think they are appropriate for

people or for the environment?

City Living

Q: What kind of house would you build if you lived in the Arctic?

Q: What kind of house would you build if you lived in the desert?

Q: What kind of house would you build if you lived on a lake?

A: One that floats!!!!

This is actually the case in The Tonle Sap, Cambodia! Where is Cambodia?

What’s it like there?

The Tonle Sap

Floating Villages

Houses on stilts:

Dry Season Flood Season

Floating houses

Methods of Flotation: Spot them-

What are some issues with living in floating houses?

2. Sanitation and Water

3. Fuel / energy • Cooking fumes • Fires

4. Food availability

1.

Buoyancy:

The buoyant force is equal to the weight of water displaced by the object.

Activity for today: Making a floating house!

Aim: Build a floating house that can hold the greatest number of marbles. Your budget is 5 units Each of the following things costs 1 unit: • 1 X cup (foam or plastic) OR 1 X balloon OR 1 X cardboard OR 1 X

brown paper back • 4 X straws OR 4 X paddle pop sticks OR 4 X rubber bands • 30cm sticky tape OR 30cm cling wrap OR 30cm aluminium foil

Competition time! Please come to the front with your floating house. Time is up!

Would you live in this house? What materials did you use? What worked well? What didn’t?

Reflect:

But is this what happens in the real world?

Building materials You build with what available Resource limitation You couldn’t buy everything at the

stall Ideas With less money = innovation. You

all had different designs! Appropriate for the environment? None of you had a roof! Any other

problems you can think of? Time limit Shelter is one of the basic human

needs. You can’t get a job without a house.
