Stuart Malina, Music Director

Carmen Finestra was born in Harrisburg, graduated from Bishop McDevitt High School, and received a B.S. Degree from Penn State University.

He was Supervising Producer of “The Cosby Show” for 5 and 1/2 seasons, and Co-Creator and Executive Producer of “Home Improvement”, starring Tim Allen. In film, he was Executive Producer of “Where The Heart Is”, with Natalie Portman and Ashley Judd, and “What Women Want”, with Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt.

Maestro Stuart Malina is one of America’s most versatile and accomplished conductors. In a wide variety of concerts, from masterworks and grand opera to pops, Maestro Malina’s engaging personality and insightful interpretations have thrilled audiences and helped break down the barriers between performer and listener. Malina has been conducting the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra since 2000. His activities also extend to Broadway, where he has conducted over twenty musical theater productions, including such assignments as a national tour as Associate Conductor of West Side Story, Music Director of the Off-Broadway hit Prom Queens

Unchained, and a tour with the Charleston production of Porgy and Bess with performances in the United States, Canada, and at the Israel Festival. In June 2003, Maestro Malina won a coveted TONY award for his orchestration of Billy Joel’s songs for the musical Movin’ Out, which opened in Chicago in July 2002 and on Broadway the following October. He served as the music supervisor and music director of both the Broadway and National Tour of the show.

A concert pianist, Maestro Malina has impressive credits as soloist. He has concertized throughout the Northeastern USA, the Netherlands, and with the acclaimed Piccolo Spoleto Contemporary Music Festival. His chamber music activities include a special HSO annual concert - Stuart and Friends - generously underwriten by Marilynn R. Kanenson in memory of Dr. William Kanenson.

Maestro Malina holds degrees from Harvard University, the Yale School of Music, and the Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied conducting with Otto-Werner Mueller.

Jeff Woodruff began his tenure as Executive Director of the Harrisburg Symphony in August 2003. Prior to coming to Harrisburg he served as General Manager of both the Houston Symphony in Texas and The Florida Orchestra in the Tampa Bay area. Before moving to Florida Mr. Woodruff spent twenty-one years in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where he held the post of Artistic Administrator at the Grand Teton Music Festival for seven years and Manager of KMTN-FM radio for fourteen years. Mr. Woodruff grew up in Los Angeles and is a graduate of the University of Southern California. He lives near Carlisle with his wife, Susan, and their two children, Susannah and Heath.

A Community Remembers

The HSO presents a cross-genre “concert of remembrance” as the nation observes the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. What would the holiday season be without the special music created for it? Vocalist Hilary Kole joins Stuart Malina, the HSO and the Messiah College Concert Choir for a truly spectacular musical celebration of the holidays. We invite you to mark your calendars for Sunday afternoon, September 11, and plan to be with the Harrisburg Symphony as we present a cross-genre “Concert of Remembrance” on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Local jazz legend Steve Rudolph will be joining us on the jazz-flavored first half, along with saxophonists Tim Warfield and Jonathan Ragonese, and vocalists Diane Wilson and J.D. Walter. On the 2nd half, the orchestra will be joined by four vocal soloists and the Susquehanna Chorale in a performance of Mozart’s sublime final masterpiece, his Requiem.

Later in September we will launch our subscription season with the first of seven Masterworks programs. Great symphonies by Prokofiev, Brahms, Mozart, and Beethoven (yes, THE Fifth Symphony), will be performed, along with a number of dazzling concertos and many more beautiful and inspiring works from the virtually limitless treasure trove of orchestral music.

On the Capital BlueCross Pops Series, we will present a frightful program of spooky film music on Halloween weekend, evenings of Broadway favorites (January 28-29) and Motown classics (May 5-6), and the great Irish Tenor, Ronan Tynan, brings his special blend of music and humor on St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

Special events during 2011-12 include a collaboration with Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet in a choreographed version of Saint-Saëns’ ever popular “Carnival of the Animals” on October 22-23 at the Whitaker Center. On December 10-11, vocalist Hilary Kole and the Messiah College Concert Choir will join the Harrisburg Symphony for two performances of everyone’s favorite holiday music. On March 20, there’s the annual “Stuart and Friends” Concert at Rose Lehrman Performing Arts Center at HACC, and then, on April 1, the Dr. Seuss classic, “Green Eggs and Ham,” will delight children of all ages at a special family concert, also at Rose Lehrman. Don’t miss our Harrisburg Symphony Youth Orchestra next season as they perform three concerts - their talent and musicianship will astound you!

The Harrisburg Symphony Youth Orchestra program fosters a creative environment where young musicians rehearse, are coached by HSO’s professional musicians, and perform symphonic masterpieces for live audiences. There are two core ensembles: the Harrisburg Symphony Youth Orchestra (HSYO) for 9th-12th grade students and the Junior Youth String Orchestra (JYSO), a strings-only ensemble for 6th-9th grade students.

nUnder the leadership of Music Director Tara Simoncic, the HSYO and JYSO bring together top high school and middle

school musicians from all over Central Pennsylvania. Admission to both ensembles is by competitive audition. The HSYO season includes fall, winter and spring performances, educational

performances, a concerto competition, master classes, and collaborations with

other cultural institutions.

Both orchestras offer young musicians an opportunity to

hone their technique, learn challenging repertoire, and develop discipline and a sense of teamwork. As they participate in a dynamic and stimulating ensemble experience, the young musicians make lasting friendships and discover a passion for music that continues throughout their lives.

The Harrisburg Symphony Youth Orchestra is entering their second year under the direction of Music Director Tara Simoncic. The Junior Youth String Orchestra begins this season under the new direction of Krista Kriel.

In the 2010/11 season, the HSYO performed a Alexander Borodin’s Second Symphony in its entirety as well as other challenging repertoire; received sectional coaching sessions with members of the HSO (professional) orchestra; and participated in a fundraising “Play-A-Thon” event, helping to raise some needed monies for the HSYO activities.

HSO FAMILY CONCERTSThe Harrisburg Symphony recognizes that presenting fine music for young people requires some extra care in programming and execution. The Family Concerts, initiated anew for 2011, feature HSO musicians in a different setting than the Masterworks and Pops concerts. The Family Concerts are events for families with young people who will enjoy quality programming in a shorter format (less than one hour). What do we mean by events? Around each concert, the HSO’s Education Committee creates an atmosphere conducive to fun and learning within the context of the program. At the April 2011 “Little Dragon” program, young concert-goers played music on an electronic dragon’s scales, “wrote” their own music compositions on the “BIG” piano; learned about global warming with experiments and fun from The Oakes Museum; made their own origami dragon head; and heard dragon stories in the lobby pre-concert.

“Sam I Am” comes to the Harrisburg Symphony in a skillfully staged and delightfully designed musical adaptation of Dr. Seuss’s classic. Michael Boudewyns performs with the HSO led by conductor Tara Simoncic to delight families in this classic story. With music by Robert Kapilow (composer of The Polar Express), Green Eggs and Ham celebrates rhyme and reason and introduces young people to the beauty and versatility of the human voice and the wonders of the orchestra.

A performance of Leopold Mozart’s clever Toy Symphony rounds out this fun afternoon.

Family ConcertGreen Eggs and Ham

YOUNG MUSICIANS COMPETITIONMessiah College, in conjunction with the HSO, hosts a biennial concerto competition on the college’s campus, just 12 miles from Harrisburg. Instrumentalists in grades 9-12 who reside in the United States are eligible and encouraged to apply. Applicants must complete the entry form available online at www.messiah.edu/music. Following that, contestants may choose any major concerto written for their instrument and must submit the first movement with cadenza in CD format. The competition is a unique opportunity for aspiring musicians to contend for a $1,000 cash prize, a scholarship to Messiah College, and consideration for a live performance of his/her concerto with the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra. In January 2011, Yen Yu (Jenny) Chen, a young pianist from Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute of Music, performed Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G with the HSO as part of her award for winning the 2010 Rising Stars Competition.

2011/12 brings two new productions to the HSO schedule. On October 22 and 23, the Harrisburg Symphony joins with Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet in a collaborative, brand new choreographed production of Camille Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals. A number of exciting activities will precede each of the four performances at the Whitaker Center in Harrisburg.

On April 1, 2012, the HSO travels to Rose Lehrman Arts Center at Harrisburg Area Community College for two performances of “Green Eggs and Ham.” Dr. Seuss’s 50-word classic is presented musically through the original score by Robert Kapilow and theatrically by Michael Boudewyn’s delightful on-stage escapades. Also on this program will be Leopold Mozart’s Toy Symphony, which entails audience participation.

While the Sound Foundation program provides financial incentive for young people and their families to attend Masterworks concerts, classical music may sometimes seem a bit daunting or even uninviting to young people who are unfamiliar with the program(s). Welcome to the Concert allows young people a way to ease into concert attendance gradually by providing them with some age appropriate information and activities prior to each Masterworks concert. A recent pre-concert program included a talk with guest solo pianist, Jeffrey Biegel, who proceeded to play the “BIG” piano on the lobby floor of the Forum with his feet!

the orchestra, the composers, and the experience of attending a live performance in community with other concert-goers. We at the HSO believe that when young people have this knowledge prior to the concert, their enjoyment is enhanced tremendously (which keeps them wanting to come back!).

YOUNG PERSON’S CONCERTSTake a fabulous field trip to the Forum in the fall or spring and experience a live, orchestral performance by the Harrisburg Symphony led by Maestro Stuart Malina. Over 6,000 area students benefit each season from these concerts, which are generously sponsored by the Derek and Margaret Hathaway Family Foundation. Sitting in the beautiful Forum building with other children from all over the Capital region and listening to excerpts from a Masterworks program shows students that learning about classical music can be exciting and fun. In the past students have been delighted watching the Maestro dance the tango with violin soloist, Alex Kerr, while emphasizing the slow, sharp, staccato beat of a Piazzolla concerto. HSO musicians often explain the music with short solos illustrating the music’s various themes. Distinct sections of the orchestra and musical instruments are often highlighted and demonstrated.

Prior to the concert, students and their teachers prepare for the concert by utilizing materials provided by the HSO to ensure that our young concert goers come prepared to make the field trip something to remember.

Attendance to these Young Person’s Concerts is free for school groups. Please ask your school administrator to register your child’s class for these exciting musical educational experiences with the Harrisburg Symphony!

2011Symphony Stroll

The “Symphony Stroll” benef its HSO Education ProgrammingEvery other year the HSO Education Committee presents Symphony Stroll, a progressive music event that allows event patrons to experience three different restaurant settings – all within walking distance (so you may stroll!) – and three distinctly different and marvelous musical ensembles, comprised of HSO musicians performing. It takes musicians off the symphony stage and places them in more casual settings around town.

This year, the HSO Symphony Stroll will take place on Saturday, August 27th from 2 – 5 pm at three downtown Harrisburg restaurants. The “Symphony Stroll” benef its HSO Education Programmingeach guest to one complimentary beverage and complimentary hors d’oeuvres at each restaurant.

The Education Committee of the HSO uses a portion of its Symphony Stroll proceeds for the Musicians in the Schools program. The committee’s latest Musicians in the Schools venture the was 100 Musicians Playing event, featuring HSO musicians and other working professional musicians doing clinics, demonstrations, and performances in area schools.
