Meditation Design in the WW-ura .mgama-

sam-adhi-S-utra

Yao-ming Tsai*

Abstract

The present study aims to discuss two topics: the design ideas of meditative

practice, and making choice from among localities for life to settle down. Since the

main point of the S-ura .mgama-sam-adhi-S-utra is the devoted practice of meditation, and

devoted practice of meditation needs professional design ideas to present them, the

present study focuses on design ideas of meditative practice and tries to reveal the

quintessence of the targeted scripture layer by layer. As to the multi-faceted life

process, the present study lays emphasis on making choice from among localities for

life to settle down. By analyzing the most basic theories of the targeted scripture and

pointing out its distinctive features, the choice between localities for life to settle down

in particular, the present study progresses from passively being in the present to

actively developing loving kindness toward all beings in the world, from consuming

the living environment to contributing to the living world.

The structure of the present study is as follows. Section One: Introduction.

Section Two: Starting from background information, the S-ura .mgama-sam-adhi-S-utra

carries a Buddhist spirituality, comprising ethical precepts, meditation, penetrating

wisdom, emptiness and non-duality, that lays emphasis on practice. Section Three:

Literature Review. The importance of the S-ura .mgama-sam-adhi-S-utra as the literature

for the present study, and the circulation and translation of the targeted scripture.

Section Four: The definition and explanation of the two key terms, “design ideas of

meditative practice” and “making choice from among localities for life to settle down,”

for further philosophical discussion. Section Five and Section Six introduce the two

main themes of the present study. Section Five: By bringing up issues and questions,

explaining the design ideas of meditative practice in the S-ura .mgama-sam-adhi-S-utra.

Section Six: With the support and strength supplied by meditative practice, the

S-ura .mgama-sam-adhi-S-utra reveals the choice from among localities for life to settle

down. Section Seven: Conclusion.

With the contribution of the present study, not only can the enquiries into

meditative practice and life philosophy be put together to conduct further academic

research, but also can the rich teachings of the S-ura .mgama-sam-adhi-S-utra bring a

wider vision for both fields.

Key words: S-ura .mgama-sam-adhi-S-utra, design ideas of meditative practice,

making choice from among localities for life to settle down
