Skimming
Skimming is reading a text to get the gist, the
basic overall idea, rather than concentrating on
absorbing all the details. For instance, many
people skim read a newspaper article just to get
a quick overview, or a text could be skimmed to
see whether it's worth reading in detail.
Class 3
Skimming
A good skimming strategy involves
reading the first sentence of a
paragraph. As the first sentence
should be the topic sentence, you
should clearly understand what that
paragraph is about.
Class 3

look for clues that will help us
find the answer.
What kind of clues can we look for and
how will they help us find the answer?
Discuss strategies with your
partner.
Class 3
Scanning.
Scanning is another technique we can use to
quickly read a passage. When we scan we are
looking for specific facts or pieces of
information. This is why it is useful to preview
the question. Then we know what keywords
we are looking for and what form the answer
will be in.
Class 3
Reading for detail
True false or not given question, you
need to understand the text fully to
be able to answer. Therefore you must
read the text carefully.
Class 3
Reading for detail
Because a text can be very long, we

find the relevant section, then read
that section for detail.
Class 3

we have understood the text, which
skill do we need to use?
