■ The health policy of EU* member states may soonbe monitored by the EU if the European Parliament hasits way, according to a report in the Lancet. Theparliament voted at the beginning of April to extendthe EU’s influence over the health policy of the 15member states, and is looking to set up a EuropeanHealth Coordination and Monitoring Centre. TheEuropean Commission has proposed that a single, EUmember state-wide public health programme shouldreplace the 8 smaller programmes under which themember states collaborate at present. $US267 millionis to be allocated to fund the proposed programmeover the next few years until 2006.* European Union
