• Research and experimental development (R&D) comprises creative work undertaken on a systematic basis in order to increase the stock of knowledge, including knowledge of man, culture and society, and the use of this stock of knowledge to devise new applications.• Basic, applied research, and experimental

• The services sector is important everywhere, but tends to be neglected in the R&D Surveys of many countries. Services may account for significant levels of R&D e.g. up to 30% of BERD (Australia)

• The growth of mobile telephony semi-monopolies, local banks, insurance and retail chains requires the ability to develop and integrate software solutions.

• Software engineering may involve the construction of unique algorithms that are part of the intangible value of a firm. The development of this intellectual property leads to commercial benefit, and is definable as R&D.
