GraduateAssistantships,TeachingAssistantships,andUniversityFellowshipsareofferedeachacademic

members with their research, teaching, and other professional responsibilities (15 hours per week).
GraduateAssistantshipsalsorequirestudentstoassisttheDepartmentinmiscellaneoustasks(5additional
hoursperweek).TeachingAssistantshipsareusuallyawardedfollowingthecompletionoftheM.A.degree
and SOC 622 (Teaching Sociology). Teaching Assistantships require students to teach undergraduate
courses independently. Teaching Assistants meet periodically with a regular faculty member for
supervision and support. University Fellowships are awarded by the Graduate School on the basis of
nominations by the Graduate Committee. University Fellowships do not entail any formal teaching or
researchresponsibilitiesfortwoyears.ResearchAssistantshipsarealsoofferedperiodically.Whenfaculty
membershavefinancialsupportfromexternalsources(e.g.,researchgrantsandcontracts)and/orinternal

Note should be taken that those who intend to apply for McKnight Fellowships should do so before
submitting an application to the Graduate Program. TheMcKnight Foundation requires this sequence.
Additionally,studentswhoreceiveMcKnightfundingdonotworkfortheDepartmentwhilethisfellowship

For the 2017/2018 academic year, Graduate Assistantships are worth approximately $56,200. This

added to the normal funding period supplied by the Department, subject to the rules of the
UniversityofMiamiand/ortherulesofthefundingagency.
All funding awards are contingent upon (a) full-time enrollment in at least nine (9) credit hours of
