WESTFIELD WESTFIELD WESTFIELD WESTFIELD WESTFIELD — The First Con-gregational Church of Westfield, lo-cated at 125 Elmer Street, will presentduo-harpists Karen Lindquist andAndré Tarantiles in a free, half-hourprogram at noon on Wednesday, De-cember 15, as the conclusion of thisseason’s Mid-Day Musicales series.

A $5 soup and sandwich luncheonwill be available in the church socialhall following the concert.

Lindquist is an avid chamber musicplayer and has appeared at theMarlboro Music Festival, with theChamber Music Society of LincolnCenter, White Mountains Festival,Music at Angel Fire, at the Bravo!,Colorado Festival in Vail and theManchester Music Festival.

She has toured the United States asa member of Speculum Musicae andthe Aurora trio and performed fre-quently with the Theatre ChamberPlayers of the Kennedy Center.

Lindquist was a featured performerwith the members of the ChicagoSymphony in Symphony Hall whereshe performed the world premier ofMichael Tenzer’s Sources of Current.

She has also been heard as soloistwith major orchestras across theUnited States and in Europe includ-ing: the National Symphony, SaintPaul Chamber Orchestra, New YorkPhilharmonic, Brooklyn Philhar-monic and the Vienna Austria Sym-phony.

Formerly a member of the Balti-more Symphony, she is principal harpof the Brooklyn Philharmonic andthe Long Island Philharmonic orches-tras.

Lindquist began her harp studies atthe age of 10. She was a student ofSuzanne Balderston and EileenMalone and later graduated from TheJulliard School, earning both herbachelor’s and master’s degrees underMarcel Grandjany.

She can be heard on Varese,Sarabande, Orion, Music Masters andBridge records.

Tarantiles, whom The New YorkTimes has referred to as “an expertharpist,” received his Bachelor of Mu-sic degree with high distinction andhis Master of Music Degree with high-est distinction from Indiana Univer-sity School of Music where he was astudent of Peter Eagle. He has alsostudied with Jane Weidensaul andKathleen Bride.

He has concertized throughout the

United States and has performed assoloist in all the major concert halls inNew York City. He has appeared onnational television accompanying op-era stars Aprile Millo, Benita Valente,Renée Fleming, Heidi Grant-Murphy,Jennifer Larmore, Marcello Giordani,Susan Graham, Maureen O’Flynn,Ruth Ann Swenson, Ramon Vargas,and Christine Goerke.

Currently principal harpist for theMetropolitan Opera Guild, New YorkCity Opera National Company,Glimmerglass Opera Festival, ArizonaOpera Wagner Festival, New JerseyState Opera, Connecticut Grand Op-era, the Center for ContemporaryOpera, Teatro Grattacielo, Northeast-ern Pennsylvania Philharmonic, Riv-erside Symphonia, the Princeton Sym-phony, Festival Musical de SantoDomingo 2001 and 2003, and mostrecently the Casals Festival in SanJuan, Puerto Rico, he has also per-formed in orchestras backing up head-liners as diverse as Placido Domingo,Marilyn Horne, Ella Fitzgerald, ShirleyJones, Steve Lawrence and EydieGormé, Tony Bennett, Johnny Mathis,Connie Francis, Roberta Flack, JohnDenver, Whitney Houston, NatalieCole and Patti Lupone.

Tarantiles’ multi-faceted career hasincluded stints at The Fantasticks (theworld’s longest running musical), Ra-dio City Musical Hall, in Broadwaypits playing both harp and synthe-sizer, and as staff harpist at the PaperMill Playhouse.

He is featured on an album re-leased by BMG, as well as a recordingof contemporary chamber music forEMI and he is also the official harpistof St. Patrick’s Cathedral in NewYork City.

Well known for his appearances asprincipal harpist with opera orches-tras throughout the east coast,Tarantiles recently was honored to beinvited to play several concerts asprincipal harpist with the OrquestaSinfonica de Puerto Rico and by NewYork City Opera for their produc-tions of Salome and The Rape ofLucretia.

Funding for these concerts has beenmade possible in part by the NewJersey State Council on the Arts, De-partment of State, a partner agency ofthe National Endowment for the Arts,through a grant administered by theUnion County Division of Culturaland Heritage Affairs.

WESTFIELD WESTFIELD WESTFIELD WESTFIELD WESTFIELD – A Junkyard Christ-mas Carol will be presented by theWestfield High School (WHS) DramaDepartment this weekend. Directedby WHS drama teacher Joe Nierle, thisplay is his adaptation of Charles Dickens“A Christmas Carol.”

The Thursday, December 9, perfor-mance will begin at 2:30 p.m. Thecurtain time for the Friday, December10, and Saturday, December 11, perfor-mances is 8 p.m. with a special matineeat 2 p.m. on Saturday.

All performances will be held in theWHS auditorium, located at 550Dorian Road in Westfield.

A Junkyard Christmas Carol has amodern twist, starting with a business-man arrested for tax fraud. His com-munity service sentence brings him tothe homeless residing in a local junkyard.

The FezziwigFamily members are Dan Foltz-Morrison, Jennifer Kujawski, RachaelLeopold and James Hooper-Hamersley.Nick Williams and Allison Siko playthe young apprentice Scrooge and hisfirst love, Belle. Mike Burns plays an-other apprentice in the Fezziwig Firm.

Allison Simon portrays Scrooge’s sister,Fan, with Chris Hild as his nephew, Fred.Lyndsay Ryan, Jessica Minsky and MauriceBlackmon complete the party group.

There, he produces a rendition of theDickens classic using the junkyard in-habitants with their environment, thejunkyard, as the play’s setting.

Jake Brandman wrote the junkyardscenes as part of his independent studyin Nierle’s drama class.

Scrooge’s one-time partner, JacobMarley, who has been dead for the pastseven years, visits him on ChristmasEve. Wearing the heavy chains he forgedin life, Marley’s mission is to prepareScrooge for the visit the three spirits ofChristmas Past, Present and Future.This is his opportunity to change hismean-spirited ways. After the eveningof memories and possibilities, Scroogeis a changed man and learns to spendChristmas in a loving and giving spirit.

Thirty-three student actors comprise

Servants, party guests, homeless andchildren are played by supporting castmembers, Patrina Caruana, Kate Dou-glas, Will Eisenberg, AlexForstenhausler, Bill Geltzeiler, SarahGerber, Jeff Hogan, Ellen Scariati andMichael Tannenbaum.

WHS art teacher Roy Chambers de-signed and constructed the set with stu-dent assistance. Tim Mathews was assistedby Greg Ryan in stage management, whileGreg and Jaclyn Nicoll handled lights.Julia Korn managed props, Lauren Miceliassembled costumes and Kayli Spialtermanaged hair and makeup duties.

All tickets for the performances aregeneral admission at $7 for adults and$5 for children 12 and under. All ticketsfor Saturday’s children’s matinee are $5.
