Since its beginnings in July 2004, Fraport Cargo Ser-
vices GmbH (FCS), a subsidiary firm of Fraport AG,
has obtained a leading position as an independent
freight carrier at Frankfurt Airport – one of the largest
airports in Europe. Being the hub between 50 airlines
and more than 400 logistic companies, FCS has
prime location warehousing with direct access to the
airfield. Similarly, for the time-critical and complex
processes regarding import and export of individual
packages, commissioned pallets or entire airplane
cargos, this is an important strategic advantage. Each
of the 670 employees has extensive specialist knowl-
edge in this area. The regulations for dealing with
various classes of goods not only need to be adhered
to, but also need to be documented accordingly. Haz-
ardous goods of all classes up to the point of ra-
dio-active materials, medical goods, human organs or
important parts for Aircraft on ground are handled
and stored here. Diverse types of documentation,
customs regulations, load capacity regulations for the
individual airplane types and the dispatch provisions
of the respective airline need to be fully understood
and managed, as do the tight time schedule. A
Jumbo carries around 100 tons of freight – around
10.000 tons a week are moved by FCS.

Fraport Cargo Services at Frankfurt Airport, being
the largest independent service company for air-
lines and logistic companies, handle 600.000 tons
of freight per year – from organ donation to com-
puter- or vehicle parts to printing machines of up
to 15 tons. Growing demands regarding imports are
being counteracted by a successful project: a new
structure for the storage area, optimized forklift
trucks and industrial PC’s with individually devel-
oped software multiplies the storage capacity,
create buffer at peak times and increase efficiency
of the extremely complex processes

The time-critical logistics processes depend on infor-
mation specifications, flyover regulations and permits.
“Without computer and software we could not fulfill
our assignments in the required time“, says Cornelius
Hemmler, IT manager at FCS. Since 2007 the Smart
Cargo Operation System, “Scope” in short, represents
all business processes. The software, which is based
on an Oracle was developed especially for the freight
handling at airports. It has various interfaces to other
systems as Zoll and SITA and for instance it has been
extended with a module for hazardous materials.
Instead of the previously used “manifests”, paper
print-outs for whole charges, nowadays staff carries
hand-held scanners by Motorola Symbol, which let
them handle each palette separately. By identification
of the goods through barcode and scanning storage,
airplane charge carriers or pallets, thus all processes,
are documented online. Here, around 160 devices
are in operation.
Nevertheless the fast growing import business repeat-
edly led to supply-shortfall. Half of the incoming ton-
nage is handled at weekends; during the lorry ban on
driving the cargo needs to be stored temporarily in
order to get it back on the road as soon as possible.
“In order to meet all the challenges with efficient pro-
cesses and additional storage space, we started a
project for import optimization,” reports Ingo Hof-
mann, process manager of Import Physics. New spe-
cially developed high rise racks extend the storage for
the own large capacity palette by 26 percent from
570 to 720 places; the storage room for European
palette was increased 436 percent to 1875. Three
especially developed magazine combination stackers
will lift two tons of loads up to seven meters high.
Further new reach trucks manage best working con-
ditions in the three rail-guarded lanes for turret
trucks. Due to new demands a new scope module for

warehouse management has been developed to-
gether with the British software vendor. In addition it
has intelligent forklift guidance, eliminating empty
drive and search for freight.
For this reason the new forklifts should be equipped
with robust industry computers, which allow a usage
via a color touch screen and together with a barcode
scanner, take over the functions of the hand-held
devices.
„Due to some limitations of the handhelds, such as
restricted battery life or a higher sensitivity for me-
chanical damages, we would like to deploy perma-
nent computers,” says Peter Kern, deputy manager of
logistical projects and quality management. A first de-
vice has been tested in 2011 following the LogiMAT
exhibition in Stuttgart. The Logistik-Systemhaus In-
teger Solutions proven in servicing Symbol devices
suggested the SOREDI Blackline-terminals from
Fürstenfeldbruck as an alternative.

Also “intrinsic values” made a positive appearance.
The fan-less Intel ATOM architecture performs suffi-
ciently combined with lowest energy consumption for
the Citrix connection to the logistic software.
A novel aerial technology guarantees constant availa-
bility and best connections.
Windows 7 facilitates the touch operation as well as
the integration in the domain by server management.
“Security measures for user storage, like login rou-
tines and write-protection for mass storage, were
easily implemented”, says Sebastin Pyka, IT-Manager
at Integer Solutions. Additionally special SOREDI fea-
tures were available: “When the ignition of the forklift
switched off, the operation system of the Black-
line-IPC will be shut-down orderly after 30 seconds,”
says IT Manager Cornelius Hemmler. Due to easily
comparable purchase prices it was not difficult to
decide in favor of the SOREDI terminals: “With this
decision we also chose the excellent service of In-
teger Solutions, who offer us hardware, software and
service as a one-stop shop”, says Peter Kern. “The
longtime partner for solutions in logistics in nearby
Bad Nauheim has served us well so far.” Altogether
ten SH Blackline IPCs were purchased.

The complex project including the conversion and
sourcing measures of own and external software de-
velopment, employee involvement and training, has
been organized in a non-stop 24 hour operation and
was completed in time after 8 months of work from
March until November 2011. The massive pro-
cess-reorganization faced criticism at the beginning:
“No one could imagine how well our strategy would
work out,” says Peter Kern. When important mile-
stones were achieved on
time, the employees
suggested practical
ideas. “We completed
the project in the time-
frame by actively
involving the employees
in the planning process
and thus reaching a
better acceptance than we expec ted.” says Peter
Kern.
The import area benefits from the considerably in-
creased ideal stock capacity and numerous improve-
ments in processes: The logistic module saves many
empty trips and search procedures; the drivers are
guided to the correct positions in the aisle straight-
away. This way the new forklifts are working to full
capacity and can complete more transport orders at
the same time. “We have extended our capacity sig-
nificantly and observe a considerable increase in pro-
ductivity,” says Ingo Hofmann, process manager of
import. Further improvements are already being
planned: In future outgoing lorries, will be directed to
the appropriate gate nearest to the goods automati-
cally. The user-friendly and robust IPC with scanner
will likewise be deployed at the acceptance of
consignment.
