George Watson’s College MUN Conference 2015
General Assembly Debate:How successful was the UN in meeting their
Millenium Development Goals by 2015?
Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hungerAchievements:
- Goal to reduce the number of people living on less than $1.25 a day by half has been met - now only 22% of world population compared to half in 1990
Limits:- 6 out of 9 regions have not halved the number of
undernourished people- Many regions experiencing only small reductions in
extreme poverty - the reaching of the goal possibly due to dramatic improvements in poverty in China, not elsewhere.
Goal 2: Achieve universal primary educationAchievements:
- Number of children out of school is only 58 million throughout the world.
- Enrolment rates have increased 7% between 2000 and 2011.
Limits:- The pace has slowed down and more needs to be done
to achieve this goal.
Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women
Achievements:- Goal of having equal enrolment of male and female
students are expected to be met by 2015 (were met in primary and tertiary education in 2010)
- Has been an increase in the number of women employed in developing regions
- Increase in women in politics with 22% of seats in government held by women compared to 14% in 2000
Limits- Only modest increase in employment - 3%- Women still significantly under-represented in government
Goal 4: Reduce child mortality Achievements:
- Mortality rate of under-fives dropped by 50% from 90 to 48 deaths per 1,000.
- Vaccines for measles saved nearly 14 million lives
Limits:- Preventable diseases are the main culprit for child
mortality.- Sub-Saharan Africa and southeast Asia still experience
relatively high under-five mortality rates.- 4 out of 5 under-five deaths occur in these regions.
Goal 5: Improve maternal healthAchievements:
- Percentage of births attended by a sklled healthcare professional increased from 56 - 68%
- 52% of women having 4 or more antenatal check ups
Limits- Maternal mortality remains “unacceptably high” according to
the UN- No developing regions had managed to achieve the goal to
reduce maternal mortality by 75% two years before the deadline
Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
Achievements:- Between 2000 and 2012, an estimated 3.3 million lives
were saved due to malaria treatments.- The spread of TB has reduced and some 22 million
lives have been saved since 1995.
Limits:- In 2012, nearly 600 children died every day because of
HIV/AIDS.- Only 39% of men and 28% of women (aged between 15
and 24) have comprehensive knowledge of HIV transmission.
Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainabilityAchievements:
- Rate of deforestation has decreased- Over 2.3 billion people have gained access to safe
drinking water since 1990- Over a quarter of the world’s population have gained
access to basic sanitation- 200 million slum dwellers experienced improvement in
their living conditionsLimits:
- 1 billion people still resort to open defecation- One third of urban residents in developing countries
being slum dwellers
Goal 8: Global partnership for developmentAchievements:
- Net amount raised by members of Development Assistance Committee was $134.8 million.
- 80% of imports from developing countries entered duty-free.
- Debts of LEDCs reduced by nearly 9% of export revenue.
Limits:- Aid spending in some countries still is not at the level
set in 2000 at 0.7% of GNI.
