GEORGE ROGERS CLARK

CLARK’S LIFE• George Rogers Clark was born on November 19, 1752. Clark was a soldier from Virginia (

Now Kentucky ). He took part in many wars. After trying to schedule a surprise attack on Spanish possessions in Mississippi, and feeling as though the country was ungrateful after Genet's recall, Clark started excessively drinking and lived the rest of his life in isolation. He died of a stroke on February 13, 1818.

THE ROLE HE PLAYED DURING THE WAR• George Rogers Clark was the leader of the Virginia Militia against the Britsh. Clark was a

Patriot and was considered very loyal to his people.

HIS RANK• He survived the Revolutionary war. His rank after the war was Brigadier Frontier.

• My Opinion George Rogers Clark is I think that he was a great man. He fought for freedom hundreds of years ago and I think he deserved more appreciation for that when he was still alive.

2 ADDITIONAL FACTS ABOUT HIM• George had five brothers and four sisters. Five of them served in the American Revolution

and three of them became generals.

• In 1809, Clark suffered a stroke and fell into his cabin’s fireplace. His leg was so badly burned that it had to be cut off. While the operation took place, George listened to the music of regimental fifes and drums. He had no anesthetic.

THE MOST INTERESTING THING• In 1783, Thomas Jefferson asked George to head an expedition to explore the land west

of the Mississippi. George declined. In 1803, Jefferson asked George’s younger brother, William the same question and he accepted, becoming part of the famous Lewis and Clark expedition.
