GANGES RIVER DOLPHIN

As a calf, I am dependent on my mother until the age of one. I can be found in groups of other Ganges river dolphins, known as ‘pods’, the average size of which is two individuals.

Pollution is also a problem to my species, in particular chemical pollution that makes the freshwater I live in polluted.

Mysurvivalisthreatenedbytheconstructionofdamsandwaterdevelopmentprojects that isolate me from other river dolphins and limit my access to prey.

Iliketoliveinareasoftheriverwherefishareplentifulandthewatercurrentisslower.Forthesamereasonhumansalsoliketofishinthese areas and sometimes I get caught accidentally in their fishingnets.

CLASSIFICATION

• Mydietincludesavarietyoffishandinvertebratessuchasprawns,clamsandcarp.

• Inormallychasefishthatcanbefoundnearthesurfaceoftheriver,orfeedonthose that are beneath the mud with the help of my long snout.

I am essentially blind – I hunt by sending out ultrasonic sounds, which bounce off of fish and other prey,

enabling me to ‘see’ an image in my mind.
