Why Check for Student’s Understanding?

Relevance, Purpose and Familiar Methods

Checking for Understanding: Relevance and Purpose

● immediate feedback on what they know and do NOT know YET: self-awareness for the students

● gives the message that the context and thinking of all students are necessary for the success of the lesson

● “..provides the teacher with a decision-making point: do I need to further scaffold this learner's understanding?”. (Fisher and Frey, Guided Instruction, 2010)*
