For taking representative samples of s ilica sand
This tool is used for obtaining samples of silica sand from lorries, stockpiles or storage bins. It is easilyinserted if the sand is not packed. It has a polished stainless steel stem, which is strong, light, resists wearand is easy to handle, and also a detachable operating handle.
To collect the sand sample, the sampler is inserted into the sand pile to the required depth. During insertionthe moveable collar prevents entry of sand into the collecting chamber; only when the sampler is withdrawndoes the collar move down to allow access of the sand to the chamber. When the sampler is completelywithdrawn from the sand pile it is turned upside down enabling the sand sample to run through the samplertube into the sand sample container.

For the determination of the clay content of a moulding sand
Comprises motor stirrer unit, two glass beakers, metal stand, syphon tube, cleaning brush andseparate control box with time switch and audible alarm.
The determination of the clay content of a moulding sand is made by agitating a sample of the sandin a weak tetrasodium pyrophosphate solution in a glass beaker, then syphoning off the clay-bearing solution using the special clip-on syphon tube. The process of re-diluting, agitating andsyphoning is repeated until the solution is clear. The sand grains collected in the beaker are thendried and weighed, and the clay grade is calculated from the loss in weight. The sand grains arenormally retained for grading by sieving.
The features of the Type N Rapid Sand Washer are that the motor stirrer unit is more robust than informer models, the agitator disc is replaceable, and the wash bottle assembly is replaced by a
special graduated heat resisting glass beaker which is mounted in a metal stand for stability duringthe agitation process. The incorporation of a separate control box provides an invaluable means oftiming and controlling the agitation and settling periods. (This controller can be purchased as aseparate item for use with former Rapid Sand Washer models or with other equipment).

METHYLENE BLUE
CLAY TESTER
Comprises strong metal base with titration stand inwhich is mounted a reservoir with gravity-filledburette and overflow bottle, plus motor driven stirrer:also included are two 250 ml stainless steelbeakers, one 500 ml flask with 50 ml calibrateddelivery pipette, two bottles of methylene bluesolution, one bottle of tetrasodium pyrophosphate, box of circular filters, bottle of vaseline and glass rod
The determination of the live clay content in foundrysandsystems is made through a measurement of its baseexchange capacity by titration with methylene bluesolution.
If the sand is titrated following the minimum oagitation one can measure the dispersed clay, which is that portion of clay which is free to react. Ithe sand agglomerates are broken down (byultrasonic scrubbing or by boiling with sulphuricacid), one measures the total live clay in the sandsystem.
The Methylene Blue Clay Tester can thus be usedto determine dispersed or total live clay contents insands bonded with western and/or southernbentonites, or with refractory clay. It can also beused to check incomin cla /bentonite shi ments.

SAND SPECIFIC
SURFACE TESTER
The Sand Secific Surface Tester operates on an airpermeability method and is used to determine the actualsurface area of sand samples in terms of squarecentimetres per gram of sand.
In the past, the evaluation of grain shape has been basedalmost entirely on microscopic observation. With theSand Specific Surface Tester, angularity and specificsurface area can now be expressed quantitatively andaccurately. This instrument makes it possible to eliminatethe total reliance on human judgement that is a majorfeature of microscopic methods.
The specific surface test enables the operator to estimateliquid binder requirements quickly for new, unknownsands.

For milling and mixing experimental batches of moulding and core sands.
460 mm diameter pan capacity 1-4 kg of sand. Fitted with tundish and sprinkler for uniform distribution ofwater additions.
This mill is similar in design to the roller type of sand mills used in foundry practice. The preparation ofexperimental sand mixtures under full-scale conditions in the foundry can become costly, and a small mill istherefore an essential piece of equipment for the sand testing laboratory.
A hp motor is directly coupled to the driving shaft which is suitably geared to rotate the rollers at a speed of30 rpm.
Push button Stop/Start switch with inching button gives easy control for adding materials and discharging themixture.
A cut out switch is fitted to prevent operation of the motor when the safety grill is raised.

Ideally sui ted for mixing oil, resin and silicate bonded sand mixtures.
Two specially shaped blades mounted on solid steel cone rotate at a speed of 35 rpm.
Time Switch, incorporated in the machine for starting and switching off the motor, can be set for periods up to 15 minutes.
Designed for making small scale mixtures from 1-2 kg in the laboratory. The blade assembly is
driven directly from the output shaft of a robust hp geared motor. Fixed breakers on the side ofthe pan churn up the mixture and give very efficient blending in a few minutes. Sand is readilydischarged by pulling out the door at the base of the pan. Another important feature is the easewith which the complete blade assembly can be removed to facilitate cleaning. A cut out switch isfitted to prevent operation of the motor when the safety grill is raised.

For the rapid and accurate determination of moisture in moulding sands.Equal in accuracy to the oven drying method
Complete with three 50 mm deep drying pans, pan cooling base and handling tongs.
Mechanical time switch 0-15 minutes. Temperature range approximately 90-170 C.
This is an instrument in which preheated air is passed through the material to be tested which iscontained in a tared sample pan with special woven wire base. The sample is weighed, and thendried for a specified time at a thermostatically controlled temperature. After the moisture has been
removed, the material is again weighed. The quick action of the Moisture Teller is due to the hot airbeing blown through a thin layer of the material. A feature of this machine is that a large sample (50grams) is used, thus increasing the accuracy of the method.
The Moisture Teller can also be used to determine moisture in materials other than moulding sands(eg iron ore, crushed sinter, coal, metal powder, salt, hay, yarn, soap powder, malt and dried orshredded foodstuffs). Pans deeper than the normal 50 mm depth can be provided to accommodatean equivalent weight of material if this is less dense than moulding sand.

Two models of this tester are available, namely, Model Type C2, measuring 0 - 10% moisture in0.1% divisions and Model D2, measuring 0 - 20% moisture in 0.2% divisions.
The weighed sample of sand is shaken up with a measured quantity of Speedy absorbent material
(calcium carbide) in the sealed container. The principle being that acetylene gas is evolved inproportion to the amount of moisture in the sand. The gas pressure is registered on the gaugewhich is calibrated in percentage moisture.
Additional supplies of the absorbent material are held in stock in tins containing kg calciumcarbide.
Because absorbent material gives off an inflammable gas when in contact with water it isdesignated as hazardous by all transport organisations. Overseas consignments may thereforerequire separate transport arrangements from those used for other equipment.

DENSITY INDICATOR
FLOWABILITY INDICATOR
Flowability is the property which enables a sand to flowreadily into a mould and fill up the interstices when subjectedto ramming. It is influenced by moisture, permeability, grainshape, fineness and clay content. The indicator is a speciallyconstructed dial gauge calibrated to read in percentageflowability, and may be readily attached to the Sand Rammer. The stem rests on top of the plunger shaft and the movementbetween the fourth and fifth drop of the weight is registered
as flowability. The further the plunger descends, indicatingincomplete flow the lower the percentage flowability. Whenthe Sand Rammer is used for ramming test specimens, theindicator is rotated out of position. The flowability indicatorcan be supplied to fit either an imperial (AFS) rammer or ametric (DIN) rammer.

This unit is portable and enables quick permeability testing
The Electric Permmeter employs the orifice method and the pressure drop is indicated on a verysensitive gauge graduated directly in Permeability Units.
In sand control laboratories where time is an important factor, quicker testing with the ElectricPermmeter makes it possible to carry out more routine tests per day and to speed decisions so thatimmediate action can be taken in correcting any drift in permeability which may otherwise result inloss in production.
As this instrument is readily portable it can also be taken into the foundry to carry out permeabilitytests on actual production moulds in conjunction with the mould permeability accessory.
The actual test is extremely simple. An expanding O ring is used to form an airtight seal betweenthe centre post and the specimen tube. The required air pressure (10 cm of water) is supplied by ahigh speed fan with rheostat-controlled universal motor. Two standard jets are provided to permitchecking of the Electric Permmeter.

A standard AFS or DIN green sand test specimen is ejected from aspecimen tube and falls 6 ft. (1.83 m) on to a steel anvil mounted in thecentre of the 13.2 mm mesh British Standard Test Sieve. Shatter Index isdefined as the percentage of the total weight of the fractured sandspecimen which remains on the test sieve. This value, when correlated
with the compression strength test gives a good indication of themouldability of a sand, ie, the kind of lift which can be obtained when asand mould is removed from a pattern.
In accordance with theJ CST specification thespecimen falls exactlysix feet (1.83 metres).

For investment testing of resin coated shell sand
This apparatus assesses the proportion of resin coated sand which peels away from the main bodyof the cured mould.
The Peel Back Tester consists of a hopper assembly mounted above a 250 x 250 x 30 mm hotplate, controllable to 10 C, which is set in an elevated position and pivoted at the centre to enableit to be rotated through 180 . A sample tray sits beneath the assembly to collect the sand materialwhich peels away.
When the required temperature of the hot plate has been reached and stabilised an accuratelyweighed quantity of resin coated sand is released from the hopper on the hot plate. After a pre-determined time the hot plate is rotated through 180 in order to remove the uncured sand, whichfalls on to the sample tray beneath the assembly.
Peel Back quantity and curing speed factor are calculated from the proportion of sand falling on tothe sample tray, compared with the original weight.

GAS DETERMINATOR
Comprises special tube furnace with automatictemperature controller, 60 mm dia. fused silicatube fitted with water-cooled metal closure andspring gun assembly and chart recorder, mounted in one console: complete with 5charts and 12 copper sample cartridges.
This apparatus includes in one console all theequipment necessary for the determination othe gas content of foundry core sand and
moulding materials.
The BCIRA designed special tube furnacehouses a 60 mm diameter silica tube closedhemispherically at one end. The open end isfitted with a water cooled metal closure and aspring gun for injecting thin walled coppersample cartridges into the hot zone of thefurnace.
The furnace is capable of operatingtemperatures up to 1100C and is fitted with a
Eurotherm temperature controller, a solid stateunit allowing the furnace to be brought to thecorrect temperature without attention ordanger of overheating.
Below the furnace and protected by a heatshield is mounted an Arkon Model 63 PressureRecorder (0-250 mm water gauge) whichaccurately records the pressure rise in thetube due to the gas evolved from the sample.
The pressure rise can be converted to gasvolume (per gram of sample) by calibratingwith known weights of pure potassiumhydrogen carbonate
This method of determining the gas evolvedfrom moulding materials has a significantadvantage over the direct volume method inthat it enables the rate of evolution of the gasto be accurately determined. A furtheradvantage is that results are recorded on achart and hence they are independent of thehuman element and one person can readily
operate the equipment.
Services required are electricity, water, drainfor cooling water and nitrogen for sweeping

For measuring surface hardness of high pressure green sand moulds
The determination of mould hardness is one of the simplestand most useful methods of assessing and controlling thequality of green sand moulds. The hardness number is anindication of the degree of compaction, and providesinformation on the ability of a mould to producedimensionally accurate castings.
This tester has a conical probe with arounded tip and is spring loaded to 1500grams. A press button at the front of theinstrument locks the pointer whentesting in blind portions of the mould.
Generally, mould hardness values arewithin the range of 60-85 on the
standard Green Hardness Tester (BScale) with 13 mm () radius probe, and this has proved satisfactory withinthis range. With the development ofhigh pressure moulding, however, hardness values in excess of 90 (BScale) have become common and thisinstrument has been introduced fortesting moulds in the higher range of 85-100 hardness.
The relationship between B Scale and
C Scale Hardness Testers is shown inthe accompanying graph. It will benoted that the sensitivities of the twoscales are very similar up to a hardnessof 85, above this the C Scale Testerhas a greater sensitivity.

For controlling the surface hardness of cores
This instrument has a four-point penetrator for abrading the surface of the core. Depth of penetration isregistered directly onto a gauge which represents numerically the hardness of the core.
Hardness measurements will indicate errors in the degree of bake or cure and variations in density overa core surface.
For measuring the sub-surface strength of sand moulds and cores
This instrument was developed primarily for determining the safe stripping time for moulds and coresmade from cold self-hardening sand mixtures, but it has been found equally useful for measuring the
sub-surface strength of CO2-silicate moulds and cores and surface dried green sand moulds.
The graduated probe is driven into the surface of the mould or core by means of a spring loadedhammer inside the body of the instrument. The number of hammer blows of equal impact required todrive the probe a given distance into the material indicates the sub-surface strength.
The spring loading on the hammer is adjustable so that for a given setting it can readily be used as aroutine acceptance test for production moulds and cores.
