Kiva passed away Sunday, Sep-tember 19th after recently being di-agnosed with stage IV colon can-cer.

An integral part of the NorthShore Journal newspaper team,Kiva had the official title of SalesManager. For many businesses inLake, Cook, and St. Louis counties,Kiva was the familiar face of thenewspaper. Traveling throughoutthe Arrowhead, Kiva stopped by toupdate ads for customers and catchup on their lives. Whether businesswas on the upswing, or in a lull, itwas his persistent and upbeat na-ture that convinced many to placean ad. But, it was his willingness tobuild a solid relationship with cus-tomers that kept most coming backto work with the paper again.

As a small, locally owned news-paper with just an editor and tworegular reporters, Kiva was a largepart of keeping this small businessin business. True, he sold advertis-ing, however, his influence ran far

Dylan rec-ognized the genius of Scarlet’s vi-sion as a violinist who played muchlike a lead guitarist. Scarlet’s dy-namic presence led the way to theinclusion of other string players inRock music. ‘Desire’ was chosenby Time Magazine as one of the top

Herabilities are wide ranging and haveenjoyed the spotlight in music’smost hallowed Carnegie Hall, withThe Duke Ellington Orchestra aswell as The Kennedy Center and theCarnival of Venice, Italy. Her cur-rent Grammy nominated vocal de-but, ‘All of Me’, has been spot-lighted with stellar reviews aroundthe world.

Fredy Argir was born and raisedin Hibbing, Minnesota, and for mostof his life he has lived in and workedout of Austin, Texas.

When he got out of school he trav-eled for decades, wrote folk songsand toured on the college coffee-house circuit. Fredy lived andworked in New York, San Fran-cisco, Austin, and Northern Minne-sota and drifted around for manyyears as a solo performer and had afew bands.

By his own reckoning, Argir hascut twenty-five albums and releaseda dozen of them. Several of his re-cordings, including Thistledewfrom the 1970’s and One-ManDancing from 2001, surface in in-

teresting ways every sooften. Argir’s music re-cording career spansfrom his first album ‘NotYet Home’ in 1968, tothe latest ‘Southwest’due out later this year in2021.

In a 2011 review of his‘Last Time Around’ al-bum, Duluth music criticJohn Ziegler had the fol-lowing observationsabout Fredy, “FredyArgir’s music is like abattered leather jacketthat’s seen miles underthe sun, wind and rain.

It’s wrinkled, creased and discol-ored in places and it’s just got thatcharacter than an unworn, unused,shiny new one doesn’t have…(h)ecomes from the school; of artistswhose vocal qualities don’t centeron impressing an audience with ahuge range and a palette of prettytimbres. He belongs in the samerecord bin at the mom-and-poprecord shop as Tom Waits, LouReed and Warren Zevon. It ain’tpretty, but it’s got balls and it’sloaded with depth and emotion.”

porting the editor, constantly seeingways the paper could be improved,and always striving for the most in-formative, locally relevant, and ac-curate newspaper that just a fewdetermined people could pull offevery week. Always generating newideas, he urged and encouraged theeditor to put together a paper thatshe, and the entire north shore couldbe proud of.

Kiva supported the work of re-porting for this writer in more waysthan I can possibly credit. Storyleads, ways to develop stories, con-tacts, and a keen editorial eye en-couraged me to be a better reporter.Always available to hash out pathsto the best, clearest, and most ethi-cal way to approach a news article,Kiva was an enormous resource forall of my writing.

Gardening was always on hismind, and his gardens at his homenear Finland were a marvel to be-hold. He was an accomplished gar-dener, diligently documenting hisseeds, plantings, and harvests. Be-

yond just growing plants really well,Kiva was generous in sharing hisbounty.

Gifted with an orderly mind anda wry sense of humor, Kiva wassomeone to count on for an honestopinion, and was the best of part-ners in an intellectual conversation.A lover of words, newspapers andbooks, he was well read and shar-ing books was one way he con-nected with his fellow human trav-elers.

On the lookout for solutions, Kivafundamentally saw the world as aseries of challenges that could besolved with his unique brand oflogic and compassion. He certainlyhelped me puzzle through manychallenges, both professional andpersonal. He will be greatly missed.

A Celebration of Life will be heldfor Kiva at the Finland CommunityCenter on Tuesday, October 5th from11:00 am to 3:00 pm.
