From a classical background she bent the accepted norms by experimenting with all genres of music from Rock fusion and Jazz to Latin polyrhythms. She was a revolution- ary from the start. Bob Dylan was the first to dis- cover and acknowledge Scarlet, in- viting her as an integral part of the legendary album ‘Desire’ and Roll- ing Thunder Revue tour. Dylan rec- ognized the genius of Scarlet’s vi- sion as a violinist who played much like a lead guitarist. Scarlet’s dy- namic presence led the way to the inclusion of other string players in Rock music. ‘Desire’ was chosen by Time Magazine as one of the top Scarlet Rivera and The Freddy Argir Band Rolling in to Silver Bay like thunder from LA and SW Texas five albums of Dylan’s career and was Scarlet’s debut on the world stage. Her abilities are wide ranging and have enjoyed the spotlight in music’s most hallowed Carnegie Hall, with The Duke Ellington Orchestra as well as The Kennedy Center and the Carnival of Venice, Italy. Fredy Argir was born and raised in Hibbing, Minnesota, and for most of his life he has lived in and worked out of Austin, Texas. When he got out of school he trav- eled for decades, wrote folk songs and toured on the college coffee- house circuit. Fredy lived and worked in New York, San Fran- cisco, Austin, and Northern Minne- sota and drifted around for many years as a solo performer and had a few bands. By his own reckoning, Argir has cut twenty-five albums and released a dozen of them. Several of his re- cordings, including Thistledew from the 1970’s and One-Man Dancing from 2001, surface in in- teresting ways every so often. Argir’s music re- cording career spans from his first album ‘Not Yet Home’ in 1968, to the latest ‘Southwest’ due out later this year in 2021. In a 2011 review of his ‘Last Time Around’ al- bum, Duluth music critic John Ziegler had the fol- lowing observations about Fredy, “Fredy Argir’s music is like a battered leather jacket that’s seen miles under the sun, wind and rain. It’s wrinkled, creased and discol- ored in places and it’s just got that character than an unworn, unused, shiny new one doesn’t have…(h)e comes from the school; of artists whose vocal qualities don’t center on impressing an audience with a huge range and a palette of pretty timbres. Kiva played an active role in sup- porting the editor, constantly seeing ways the paper could be improved, and always striving for the most in- formative, locally relevant, and ac- curate newspaper that just a few determined people could pull off every week. Always generating new ideas, he urged and encouraged the editor to put together a paper that she, and the entire north shore could be proud of. Kiva supported the work of re- porting for this writer in more ways than I can possibly credit. Story leads, ways to develop stories, con- tacts, and a keen editorial eye en- couraged me to be a better reporter. Always available to hash out paths to the best, clearest, and most ethi- cal way to approach a news article, Kiva was an enormous resource for all of my writing. Gardening was always on his mind, and his gardens at his home near Finland were a marvel to be- hold. He was an accomplished gar- dener, diligently documenting his seeds, plantings, and harvests. Be- yond just growing plants really well, Kiva was generous in sharing his bounty. Gifted with an orderly mind and a wry sense of humor, Kiva was someone to count on for an honest opinion, and was the best of part- ners in an intellectual conversation. A lover of words, newspapers and books, he was well read and shar- ing books was one way he con- nected with his fellow human trav- elers. On the lookout for solutions, Kiva fundamentally saw the world as a series of challenges that could be solved with his unique brand of logic and compassion. He certainly helped me puzzle through many challenges, both professional and personal. He will be greatly missed.
