FacultyareappointedtotherankofProfessor,AssociateProfessor,AssistantProfessor,andinstructor.EachfacultymemberoftheSchoolofMedicinemustpossessanappropriateacademicdegreeorbeotherwiseappropriatelycredentialed;demonstrateachievementwithintheirdiscipline(s);demonstratethecapabilityandcontinuedcommitmenttobeaneffectiveteacher;andbecommittedtoongoingscholarlyactivityandservicetothecommunity.Facultymembersmustbecapableoffunctioningautonomouslyintheiracademicroles.Atthetimeofinitialappointmentallfacultymustparticipateinanorientation/developmentprogramdirectedbytheDean’soffice.Thisprogramshallinclude,butnotbelimitedtoreviewofthefollowing:theSchool’svision,missionandvaluesstatement;theSchool’scommitmenttodiversity;thecurricularcompetenciesandcurriculumgoalsandobjectives;thecurriculumstructure;theSchool’sacademicpolicies,includingcodesofconduct;andthemethodologiesandbestpracticesforeffectiveteachingandevaluationofstudentachievement.Asaconditionofcontinuingappointment,allfacultymembersmustparticipateinanannualprofessionaldevelopmentprogramdirectedbytheDean’soffice.A. FacultyAppointmentsFacultymaybeappointedatoneofthefollowingfourranks:Instructor,AssistantProfessor,AssociateProfessor,orProfessor.ForthepurposeofserviceontheUniversity’sFacultySenate,paidfacultyaretermed“In-Residence.”

Thesamecriteriashallapplyforaninitialappointmenttoanyrankastothepromotiontoanynewrank(sectionIV.C).Thesecriteriarecognizethreebroadareasofacademicactivity:teachingactivity;scholarship,whichincludesresearchandothercreativeactivityintherelevantdiscipline(s);andservice.Serviceshallincludecontributionstoprofessionalsocieties;researchgrant-awardingbodies;scientificjournals;andcommitteeservice(todepartment,School,Universityprograms,andtheUniversityitself,aswellasservicetothecommunity).

1. MedicalSciencesFaculty

AllMedicalSciencesfacultyappointmentswithintheQuinnipiacUniversitySchoolofMedicinewillbetermappointments,withinitialcontractssetforthreeyears.AssistantProfessorswillhavethree-yearrenewablecontracts.UponpromotiontoAssociateProfessor,thecontractwillbeextendedtoafive-yearrenewablecontract.Aftersuccessfulcompletionoftheinitialthree-yearcontract,AssociateProfessorsandProfessors

receivefive-yearcontracts.ContractrenewalisbaseduponcontinuedsatisfactoryachievementofcriteriaforpromotiontoAssistantandAssociateProfessorandforProfessorsmeetingthecriteriaforinitialpromotiontorank.Uponthesuccessfulperformanceofassigneddutiesasdeterminedattheannualreview(seeAppendixC),theDepartmentChairmayrecommendthatanotheryearbeautomaticallyaddedtothefacultymember’sappointment.

2. ClinicalSciencesFacultyAnindividualwhoisemployedbyaclinicalaffiliateoftheSchoolofMedicine,orbyanotherhealthcareorganizationorinprivatepracticeshallbeeligibleforaClinicalSciencesfacultyappointmentprovidedhe/shemeetstheabove-enumeratedcriteria.a. ClinicalFaculty-AffiliatedInstitutions

Theacademictitleforfacultyfromaffiliatedinstitutionsandotherhealthcareorganizationsincludestheappropriateaffiliationnotedinparenthesisaftertherank[e.g.AssistantProfessor(XXXHospital)].Thedesignationforhospitalaffiliationisforadministrativepurposesonlyandshouldnotbeusedforpublicfacultylistsorcorrespondence.Facultyappointmentsmustbereviewedandrenewedonaregularbasisbythedepartmentchairwiththeadvice,whereapplicable,oftheappropriatechiefofserviceoftheaffiliatedinstitution.Atthetimeofreview,thefacultymembershalldocumenthis/hercontributionstotheSchoolofMedicine(e.g.,amountandnatureofstudentteachingandcommitteeparticipation),theircommitmenttocontinuingscholarlyactivity,theirservicetothecommunity,providecontinuedevidenceofongoingprofessionaldevelopmentinaccordancewiththefacultymember’sassignmentofdutiesagreeduponduringthepreviousannualperformancereview,anddemonstratecontinuedclinicalexcellence(ifapplicable).

b. ClinicalFaculty-CommunityBasedAclinicianwhoisinprivatepracticeshallbeeligibleforacommunity-basedclinicalfacultyappointmentifhe/shecontributestotheacademicmissionoftheSchoolofMedicine.Theacademicranksforcommunity-basedclinicalfacultyincludeClinicalInstructor,AssistantClinicalProfessor,AssociateClinicalProfessor,andClinicalProfessor.Allcommunity-basedclinicalfacultyappointmentsmustbereviewedandrenewedonaregularbasisbythedepartmentchairofmedicalscienceswiththeconsentoftheDean/deandesignee.Atthetimeofreview,thefacultymembershalldocumenthis/hercontributionstotheSchoolofMedicine(e.g.,amountandnatureofstudentteachingandcommitteeparticipation),provideevidenceofongoingcommitmenttoscholarlyactivity,servicetothecommunity,andprofessionaldevelopment,anddemonstratecontinuedclinicalexcellence(ifapplicable).

3. AdjunctFacultyAnindividualwhoisemployedbyanothercollegeoruniversity,orengagedinscholarlyactivityinaprivateorganization(e.g.aresearchcenterorthescientificarmofabusinesssuchasapharmaceuticalfirm),shallbeeligibleforanadjunctfacultyappointmentifheorsheiscontributingtotheeducationorresearchmissionoftheSchoolofMedicine.Thesecontributionsmightbeintheformofteachingintheundergraduatemedicalcurriculumorcollaborativeresearch.TheacademicranksforadjunctfacultyincludeAdjunctInstructor,AdjunctAssistantProfessor,AdjunctAssociateProfessor,andAdjunctProfessor.AdjunctfacultymaybeappointedintheMedicalSciencesorClinicalSciencescategory.

Alladjunctfacultyappointmentsmustbereviewedandrenewedbythedepartmentheadonaregularbasis,withtheconsentoftheDean/deandesignee.Atthetimeofreview,thefacultymembershalldocumenthis/hercontributionstotheSchoolofMedicine(e.g.,amountandnatureofstudentteaching,committeeparticipation),andprovideevidenceofongoingprofessionaldevelopment.Theseappointmentsaremadeonanannualbasisandmayberenewedwithoutlimit.

4. VisitingFacultyVisitingfacultymembersareappointedforabriefperiodoftime(maximumoneyear).Anindividualconsideredforsuchappointmentmustbeafacultymemberatanotheracademicinstitutionorarecognizedexpertorscholarfromindustry.AmeaningfulcontributiontotheacademicmissionoftheSchoolofMedicineisexpectedandwillbespecifiedatthetimeofappointment.TheranksforvisitingfacultyincludeVisitingAssistantProfessor,VisitingAssociateProfessor,andVisitingProfessor.Ifemployedatanotheracademicinstitution,theappointmentwillbeatthesamerankthattheindividualholdsathis/herinstitution.VisitingfacultymaybeappointedintheMedicalSciences,orClinicalSciencescategory.

5. JointAppointmentsFacultymemberswhoseprimaryappointmentisinadepartmentofanotherschoolofQuinnipiacUniversitymaybegivenajoint(secondary)appointmentintheSchoolofMedicineinrecognitionoftheircontributionstotheschool.Policiesforjointappointmentsare:

a. Thedepartmentchairs(primaryandsecondary)shallindicateinwritingwhyajointappointmentisdesirableanddescribetheresponsibilitiesoftheindividualintheSchoolofMedicine.

b. AppointmentinaSchoolofMedicinedepartmentmustbereviewedandapprovedbythe

departmentchairandtheDean/deandesigneeoftheSchoolofMedicine,andshallbeatthesamerankashis/herdepartmentofprimaryappointment.

c. JointappointmentsarereviewedonaregularbasisandsubjecttoapprovalbytheDean/dean

designee.Atthetimeofrenewal,thedepartmentchairs(primaryandsecondary)shallindicatetheneedforrenewaloftheappointment,andwhethertheoriginalcommitmentsoftheindividualtotheprogramsoftheSchoolofMedicinehavechanged.Ifthesecommitmentshavechanged,thechairsshalldescribethenewcommitmentsofthefacultymember.

d. Thechairoftheprimarydepartmentwillbethemainevaluatorofperformanceofthefaculty

member,butalsowillseekinputfromthesecondarydepartmentchair.

CriteriaforFacultyAppointmentsInstructor

AppointmenttotherankofInstructorislimitedtoindividualswhohavenotcompletedtherequirementsneededtoearnthehighestdegreeappropriatetotheirdiscipline.ItalsoappliestoClinicalSciencesfacultywhohavecompletedtheirformaltrainingbuthavenotyetreceivedcertificationintheirspecialtyandwhohavethepotentialinexcellenceandarecapableofpromotion.Uponreceiptofthisindividual’sdegreeorofboardcertification,promotiontotherankofAssistantProfessorwilloccurifstipulatedintheindividual’scontract.Iftheindividualdoesnotobtainhis/herdegreeorboardcertificationwithinfive(5)yearsofappointmentasinstructor,theappointmentwillnotberenewed.

AssistantProfessor

AppointmenttotherankofAssistantProfessornormallyrequiresthatindividualsholdthehighestearneddegreeappropriatetotheirdiscipline,andthatClinicalSciencesfacultybeboardcertifiedinaspecialtyandhavethepotentialforexcellence.AppointmenttothisrankismadeonthejudgmentthatindividualsarecapableofpromotiontoAssociateProfessor.Evidenceofpotentialforexcellenceinteachingandforqualityscholarshipisrequired.

AssociateProfessor

AppointmentorpromotiontotherankofAssociateProfessorrecognizesthatthefacultymemberhasreachedastatusintheirdisciplineappropriatetoalife-longmemberoftheacademicworld.Thismeansthatthepersonclearlydemonstratesthescholarlycommitmentandabilitytocontinuecontributingtotherelevantfield(s)ofknowledgethroughoriginalworkandqualityteachinginthebesttraditionsoftheProfessorate.Thecandidatemustdemonstratecommitmenttoandabilityinteachingandrelatedinstructionalactivity,aswellastheabilitytocontributesuccessfullyandcontinuouslytothescholarshiporcreativeactivityofappropriateacademicdisciplines.Instructionalactivitiesshallbeasrigorouslyevaluatedasscholarshipandcreativeactivity.PromotiontoAssociateProfessorrequiresthatthecandidatehavearecordofresponsibleandconscientiousparticipationinsomeSchoolofMedicineorUniversityserviceactivities.ForClinicalSciencesfacultytheremustbedemonstratedclinicalexcellence.Merit,notyearsofservice,shallbetheprimaryfactorindeterminingthecaseforpromotiontoProfessor.Typically,anindividualshouldachievepromotionwithinsixyearsfromthetimeofappointmentattherankofAssistantProfessor.AcceleratedpromotionmaybeconsideredbytheSeniorAppointmentsandPromotionsCommitteeattherecommendationofthedepartmentchairandapprovaloftheDean/deandesignee.

Professor

AppointmentorpromotiontotherankofProfessorrecognizesdemonstratedachievementanddistinctionoverthespanofanindividual’sacademiccareer,withevidenceoflongstandingleadershipandsubstantialcontributionsbothwithinandoutsidetheSchoolofMedicine.Whiledistinctionmustbedemonstratedintheeducationalcontributionsofthefacultymember,thecandidatemustalsodemonstratecommitmenttoandcompetencyinscholarlyactivitiesandservice.ForClinicalSciencesfacultytheremustbedemonstratedclinicalexcellence.Whilethedecisioninvolvesthecandidate’sentirecareer,thecandidate’srecordmustdemonstratesignificantadditionalachievementbeyondthatdemonstratedatthetimeofappointmentorpromotiontoAssociateProfessor.Merit,notyearsofservice,shallbetheprimaryfactorindeterminingthecaseforpromotiontoProfessor.Typically,aminimumoffiveyearscompletedatanAssociateProfessorrankisrequiredforpromotiontofullProfessor.AcceleratedpromotionmaybeconsideredbytheSeniorAppointmentsandPromotionsCommitteeattherecommendationofthedepartmentchairandapprovaloftheDean/deandesignee.

AppointmentProcedure:

AppointmentattheranksofInstructorandAssistantProfessoraremadebythedepartmentchairwiththeapprovaloftheDean/deandesignee.AppointmentattheranksofAssociateProfessorandProfessorrequiresreviewofthecandidate’scurrentcurriculumvitaeandlettersofreference(aminimumoftwoexternallettersfromreviewersatequalormoreseniorrankorbysupervisors)bytheSeniorAppointmentsandPromotionCommittee(SAPC).TheSAPCalsorequiresaletteroremailfromtheapplicantrequestingtheappointmentandoutliningtheirintendedrole(s)attheNetterSchoolofMedicine.ThecommitteewilladvisetheDeanonthesuitabilityoftheappointmentwithintwoweeksofreceivingthecompletedapplication.

Teaching,Scholarship,Service,ClinicalActivityandProfessionalismDefinitionsofTeaching,Scholarship,Service,ClinicalActivityandProfessionalismasconsideredforpromotionareas

follows:

1. Teaching

TeachingattheSchoolofMedicinetakesmanydifferentforms:• Facilitatingsmallgroupsandleadingseminars;• Educatingbylecture;• Preceptinginclinicalsettings;• Rolemodeling;• Instructingintheresearchsetting;• Academicmentoringoradvising;• Othertypesofteaching.

2. ScholarlyActivity

ScholarshipisexpectedofthosefacultymemberswhodesiretoprogressinrecognitionandrankwithintheSchoolofMedicine.Dependingonthefacultymember'sassignmentsandskills,scholarshipmaytakedifferentforms(seeexampleslistsincandidate’sannualevaluationformsgivenbythedepartmentchair).Scholarshipshould:

• Resultinanidentifiableproductoroutput(e.g.curriculum,peerreviewedpublication);• BemadepublicandavailablebothwithinandoutsidetheSchoolofMedicine;• Besubjecttoreviewandcritiquebyotherscholarsinthefield;• Bereproducibleandcontributetotheprogressiveadvancementofknowledge.

EducationalResearch:Innovationinthepedagogyofmedicaleducationpresentsopportunitiesforscholarlyactivity.Evidenceofscholarshipinteachingincludes:

• Publicationofpapers,textbooks,chapters,technicalreports,videos/audios;• Presentationatmeetingsorconferences(oral,printed);• Attainmentofgrantfunding(internalorextramural);• Developmentof(oneormore):

• Participationandleadershipinfacultycommitteesandcourseorblockdevelopment;• Participationandleadershipinadministrationofclinicsorhospitalendeavors;• Involvementandleadershipinhealthcare-relatedcommunityservicegroups;• Involvementandleadershipinlocal,regional,ornationalmedicalorresearchorganizations;• Involvementinhealthcare-relatedpolicysettinggroups,taskforces,orcommittees;• Involvementforadvancementofmedical,research,oracademicprioritiesinlegislativebodies• Otherformsofservice

4. ClinicalActivity(ifapplicable)

Facultywhoareinaclinicalrolewillbeevaluatedprimarilyontheircontributionstoteachingandmentorshipintheclinicalsettingbutmustdemonstrateongoingclinicalexcellence.Theywillalsobeevaluatedontheircontributionstoinnovativeclinicalcare,asdescribedabove(Section2).

5. Professionalism

IndividualseligibleforpromotionmustcontributetoacollegialandinclusiveenvironmentandmustbehaveinaprofessionalmannerconsistentwiththeCodeofConduct.

ProcedureforFacultyPromotion

Overview:

PromotionisakeymannerinwhichtheSchoolofMedicinerecognizesandrewardsafacultymember’scontributionsandacademicachievements. PromotionrepresentsrecognitionbytheSchoolofMedicinethatthefacultymemberhasmade,andiscontinuingtomake,contributionstotheeducationofmedicalstudentsandisengagedinscholarshipandservice. ContinuedemploymentattheSOMrequiressustainedhighprofessionalcompetenceandaccomplishment.PromotionsattheSchoolofMedicinearethereforeexpectedtooccurforfacultywhoaremeetingtheirprofessionalobligationsandassignmentsonaconsistentbasis.Inthenormalcourseofevents,facultywillbeeligibleforpromotionapproximatelyevery5-7yearstheyareinagivenrank.Exceptionalcandidatesmaybeeligibleforpromotioninacompressedtimeframe.Thethreeandfiveyearreviews(seebelow)areinplacetoascertainwhetheracandidateisontrackfortimelypromotionandassistthefacultymemberinattainingthehighestrankappropriate.PromotionswillproceedfromAssistantProfessortoAssociateProfessorandthentoFullProfessor.Detailsoftherequirementsandprocedureforpromotionfollow.Continuedemploymentisnotcontingentuponpromotion.

FacultyReviewandadvancementtocandidacyforpromotion:

Three-YearDepartmentalPre-reviewforAssistantandAssociateProfessorsAssistantandAssociateProfessorsintheMedicalSciencesDepartmentattheSchoolofMedicineundergoamandatoryreviewduringtheirthird-yeartodetermineiftheyaremakingsatisfactoryprogresstowardpromotiontoAssociateorfullProfessor. ThisreviewisconductedbytheThird-YearReviewCommittee,composedoffacultywhoaremembersofthecandidate’sdepartment,selectedbythedepartmentchair,andwitharankseniortothecandidatebeingreviewed.

ClinicalScienceaswellasadjunctfacultymayalsorequesttoparticipateinathree-yearreviewtodetermineiftheyaremakingsatisfactoryprogressforpromotiontoAssociateorfullProfessor.ThisreviewisconductedbytheThird-YearReviewCommittee,composedoffacultywhoaremembersofthecandidate’sdepartment,selectedbythedepartmentchair,andwitharankseniortothecandidatebeingreviewed.

Inaddition,ClinicalScienceFacultyappointmentsarereviewedandrenewedonathree-yearbasisbythedepartmentchairwiththeconsentofthedean/deandesignee.

Thecandidatewillprepareapacketsimilartoapromotionpacketexceptlettersofrecommendationarenotincluded(seecandidatedocumentationpacket).TheThird-YearReviewCommitteewillexaminethesubstanceaswellastheformatofthepacketandmakerecommendationsonhowthepacketcouldbeimproved.Thereviewalsoexaminestheevaluationfileofthecandidateandcomparesaccomplishmentstooriginallyassignedduties.

Strengthsand/orweaknessesintherecordarecommunicatedtothecandidateanddepartmentchair.Thechairwillmeetwiththecandidatetoreviewtheevaluationandmakeappropriaterecommendations.

Five-YearDepartmentReviewforFacultyPromotionintheMedicalSciencesDepartment

AreviewoffacultymembersinthedepartmentofMedicalScienceswiththerankofAssistantProfessorandAssociateProfessorwilloccureveryfiveyears,andwillbeconductedbyadepartmentreviewcommittee.Thepurposeofthisreviewistodetermineifthecandidate’sachievementsaresufficienttowarrantconsiderationforpromotioninthefollowingacademicyear.Thedepartmentreviewcommitteeiscomposedoffacultywitharankseniortothatofthecandidatebeingreviewedandbelongingtothesamedepartment.ThereviewoccursinSeptemberandentailsareviewofthecandidate’spacket(seebelow).AvoteistakenonwhetherthecandidateshouldbepresentedtotheSAPCforconsiderationofpromotion,thetallyofwhichisreportedtothedepartmentchair.Thecandidate’spacketisidenticaltothepromotionpacketexceptitdoesnotcontainlettersofrecommendationorthechair’sletter. Thecommitteemayasktoseethechair’sletterifitisfelttobenecessaryindeterminingacandidate’sappropriatenessforpromotion.Thedepartmentreviewcommitteeisadvisorytothechairofthedepartment.Ifthechairsupportspromotion,s/heassiststhecandidateincompletionofthepromotionpacket(obtaininglettersofrecommendation)andsubmitsthepackettotheSAPCbyDecember1ofthesameyear.TheSAPCwillthenreviewtheapplicant’spacket. TheSAPCisadvisorytotheDeanandwillsendtheirrecommendationtotheDeannolaterthanJune.

Self-IdentificationandReviewofClinicalScienceFaculty

ClinicalScienceFacultycontributetotheSchoolofMedicineprimarilythroughtheircontributionstoteachingandmentorshipinaclinicalsetting. Renewalofappointmentoccursonathree-yearcycle. However,ClinicalScienceFacultymayself-identifytotheirdepartmentchairiftheybelievetheircontributionstotheSchoolofMedicinearesuchastowarrantconsiderationforpromotion. ThefollowingcriteriaareintendedtobeusedbyClinicalSciencesFacultytoself-assesstheirreadinessforconsiderationforpromotion.

ChecklistforClinicalFaculty

MinimumCriteriaforPromotionofClinicalSciencesFacultytoAssociateProfessor:

ProcessofEvaluationforPromotion:

TheprimarymissionsoftheSchoolofMedicineareteaching,scholarship,service(includingadministrativework,hereaftercalledservice),clinicalproficiency(ifappropriate),andprofessionalism.Ineverypromotiondecision,allrelevantareasmustbeconsidered. Thecategoryinwhichthecandidatedevotesthemajorityofhis/hereffortwithintheSchoolofMedicinewillserveastheprimarybasisforpromotion. Competencymustalsobedemonstratedintheotherareasnotedabove,asappropriate.Eachcandidatewillbejudgedintermsofhisorherassignments. Assignmentsaremadebythedepartmentchairandaretailoredtoaddresswhatisexpectedintermsofteaching,scholarship,service,andclinicalactivity(ifappropriate)duringtheperiodforwhichtheassignmentismade(usuallyoneyear). Iftheassignmentshavestressedoneareaofendeavormorestrongly,thenthisareawillreceivegreaterattentioninthecandidate’sevaluationforpromotion.Candidateswithdistinctiveassignments(whichdifferfromassignmentstypicallygiventoothers)willrequireanevaluationthatrespectsthisdistinctivenessandexplicitlyenablesthecandidatetheopportunitytobepromoted.Assignmentsmaybeamendeduponmutualagreementofthefacultymemberandthedepartmentchair. Scholarshipisnotevaluatedonthebasisofphilosophicalorientation,noronthespecifictopicexamined(providedthetopicisrelevanttobiomedicalscienceoreducation).Thereisnostandardrequiringaminimumnumberofscholarlyitemsbecompletedbeforeacandidatemaybeconsideredforpromotion. Rather,theentirebodyofscholarlyworkofeachcandidateisexamined.Thefollowingclassesofmaterialstypicallyweighheavilyintheevaluationofacandidate:

Thecandidateisresponsibleforassessingthequalityoftheoutletsforhis/herscholarship,andforseekingpublicationinthemostappropriateandhigh-impactvenuesfortheirpeer-reviewedmanuscripts,reviewsandtextbooks. Extramuralfundingshouldbesoughtfromthemostappropriategrantingagencies. Itisrecognizedthatoutstandingscholarshipmaybepublishedinavarietyofjournalsthataremostsuitabletoaspecificareaofscholarlyactivity. Thisneednotdiminishthevalueofthescholarlywork. Theindividualsevaluatingacandidateshouldlookat thequalityofthescholarship,independentoftheoutlet.

Theimportanceofapieceofscholarshipmay,inpart,bejudgedbyhowoftenithasbeencitedbyothersinthefield.Candidatesareurgedtoconsultcitationindexestosupportclaimsofimportanceofapieceofscholarship.

MinimumcriteriaforpromotiontoProfessor:Thescholarshipofeachcandidateisexaminedasanentirebodyofwork,whichisjudgedonitsmerits. ThefollowingcategoriesofperformancearetypicallyjudgedheavilyintheevaluationofacandidateforProfessor:

MinimumcriteriaforpromotiontoAssociateProfessor:TheSchoolofMedicinerecognizesserviceasanormalandessentialrequirementofUniversitylife.Facultymembersmaybegivenserviceaspartoftheirannualassignment,inwhichcasetheyareevaluatedintermsoftheirperformanceofassignedservice. Facultymembersarenotevaluatedoncategoriesofserviceforwhichnoassignmentwasmade.Afacultymembermayrequestthattheserviceassignmentbeamended.
