This thesis tackles my need as an artist to memorialize my family. My family and I
frequently practice documenting our lives together and preserving memories. Through times of
trial and sorrow, when the physical presence of my family members are gone, these memories
will serve to comfort me. I wanted to create ways to preserve the identities of my family members
through portraiture; it is my way of expressing my connection to a particular person. A portrait does not only require a physical or facial likeness of the subject, but must also
embody the essence of the sitter. Thus, I involve my family members in my thesis by collecting
and using their fingerprints to render their portraits. Fingerprints are impressions left on a surface
due to the skin ridges on a finger. There are biological signatures that are unchanging, and one-
of-a-kind to every person. I created a series of six large scale, black and white portraits of each family member.
Five fingerprints were collected from each sitter, totaling to thirty individual fingerprints. These
images were then transferred onto the canvases by means of photo emulsion silk screens and
stickers. Painting was also employed to emphasize the values of the portraits. Using a mix of
unconventional techniques to create these portraits, I have shown reverence for the unique identities of my family members.
