designerandengineer,IhavebeenworkingattheinterfaceofEcologyandComputerSciencesincethebeginningsofmycareer.Overtheyears,myresearchonhigh‐performancecomputersimulation,ecologicalmodeling,andartificialintelligenceappliedtoenvironmentaldataandmodelintegrationhasearnedmerecognitionandcollaborationswithprimaryUSinstitutionsandNGOsaswellasseveralforeigninstitutionsandgovernments.

AfterworkinginmanyfieldsofEcology,fromtheoreticalIslandBiogeographytoprotectedareadesign,Icamein1996totheInstituteforEcologicalEconomics(since2002theGundInstituteatUVM)initiallywithmixedfeelings(that"economics"word...)andsoondiscoveredthejoysandpainsofinterdisciplinaryresearch.Iamnowenthusiasticaboutsciencethatcaninspirelarge‐scalevisionsforasustainablefutureandbeuseddirectlyfordecision‐making,whichtranslatesdirectlyintoahumbleattitudetowardsotherdisciplinaryfieldsandattentiontotheapplicationpotentialofresearchproducts.Ontheotherhand,Iremainfullyawareofthechallenge(andtheresponsibility)ofmaintainingscientificdepthunalteredinfaceofthegreatlyincreasedbreadth,andIseemyrelationshipwithinterdisciplinaryscienceasanevolvingone.

Atthebroadestlevel,themainsubjectofmyresearchhasalwaysbeenlanguage,inawide‐rangingdefinitionthatencompassesthewaysinformationisformulatedandhowpreexistingtheoryshapesandconstrainsthedepthofthequestionsscientistsask.Whereasmostecologistsspendtheircareersseekinganswers,Ifeelstronglythatalotofimportantworkremainstobedoneonthequestionsthemselves,whichoftenconstrainanswersandpreventprogress.WhilemyresearchextendstoseveralapplicationfieldsthataredirectlyrelatedtotheGundInstitute’smission(includingprotectedareasplanning,environmentalvulnerabilityassessment,andthe

economicvaluationofbiodiversityandecosystemservices),virtuallyallofmyresearchhasapproacheditstopicsthroughthelensofformalsemanticsandknowledgerepresentation,withastrongcriticalattentiontotheconceptualframeworksimplicitinnaturalsystemdataandmodels.Thenaturaloutletofsuchresearchisnotonlyacademicpublications,butmostoftenalsothedevelopmentofsoftwareinfrastructurethatoperationalizesthetheoreticalachievementsandprovidesdirectlyusefultoolkitsthatsolvereal‐worldproblems.

Overtheyears,Ihaveattainedrecognitionasaprimarythinkerin,andoneofthepioneers

of,thenascentdisciplineofEcoinformatics.IntheUVMacademiccontext,IhaveconcentratedmyeffortsintodevelopingtheidentityforthedisciplineofEcoinformatics,andcreatedtheEcoinformaticsCollaboratorywithintheGundInstitute.TheCollaboratory,whichhasanextensivewebpresenceathttp://ecoinformatics.uvm.edu,iscommittedtounifyingthescienceandmanagementofthenaturalandhumanenvironmentinanewsynthesisinspiredbythelatestdevelopmentsofinformationtechnology,contributingnoveltechnologies,openlyaccessibledataandmodels,andinnovativeeducationtopromoteabreakthroughintheeffectivenessofenvironmentalresearch,decision‐makingandpolicy‐making.InthecourseofmyfouryearsatUVM,IhavemadetheCollaboratoryarecognizedactorinlarge‐scaleecoinformaticsinitiativesworldwide,andaparticipantinkeypartnershipssuchasthePartnershipforBiodiversityInformatics.MuchofmyoutreacheffortwithinUVMhasbeendirectedtomakingtheimportanceofEcoinformaticsrecognizableinthelargercontextoftheenvironmentalmissionofUVM.

Mypositionisagrant‐fundedresearchpositionthatdoesnotincludeteaching

commitments.Yet,Ialwaysconsideredteachinganecessarylearningexperienceaswellasachancetoputone’sscientificbeliefsandachievementstohardesttest.Inrecognitionofthis,Ihavebeeninvolvedinteachinginseveralways.MygoalsinteachingaremostlypartofaplantoraiseawarenessofEcoinformaticswithinUVM,giventhatmytimeiscompletelycommittedtoresearch.Despitethis,IseemuchunexploredpotentialinagraduatecertificateinEcoinformatics,consistingin15‐20creditsexploringthediversefacetsofenvironmentalinformationtechnology(database,knowledgemodeling,dynamicmodeling,andGIS)inanintegratedperspective.Icirculatedinformalproposalsin2004andobtainedgoodresponsefromseveralpotentialpartnersatUVM,andI’mhopingtohaveachancetopursuethisgoal.DrivenbythenotionthatnoplaceintheUSAwouldbebetterplacedthanUVMforbecomingtheprimaryeducationcenterinEcoinformaticsintheNortheast(withonlyanotheroneexistingnationally),IamcurrentlydiscussinganinterdisciplinaryecoinformaticscurriculumwithkeyplayersatthedepartmentsofComputerScienceandtheRubensteinSchoolofEnvironmentandNaturalResources,andIhavehopesthatthisdiscussionwillturnintoanactionplansoon.Incasewecancatalyzeenoughinterestandsupportfromthedepartmentsinvolved,Iwillbehappytorediscussmyagendatoinvolvemoreteaching.

Softwaredevelopmentactivity

Softwareproductionhasbeenwheremostofmyusefulresearchtimehasbeenspent.I

considertheproductionofhigh‐qualitysoftwareoneofthebestwaystoensurethepracticality,usabilityandmaximalimpactofmyresearchactivity.MysoftwarehasbeenwidelyusedandhasoftenbeenthemainreasonbehindoffersforcollaborationthathaveultimatelyledtowhatIconsidermymajorachievements.Ihavereleased12majorsoftwareprojectstodate,andledlarge‐scaledevelopmentteamssince1986.

Duringmycareer,Iconsistentlystructuredsoftwaredesignwithanemphasisonopensource,modularity,andindependenceofthecomponents,whicharecarefullydesignedtoprovideasmuchreturntotheopensourcecommunityaspossible.InordertomaximizethereturnfromsoftwaredevelopmentactivitiesattheEcoinformaticsCollaboratory,Ihavecreatedasharedopensourcecollaboratory(www.integratedmodelling.org)thatgivesaccesstoallthesourcecodeandservesasacoordinatinghubforusandotherinstitutions.Ialsocreatedandmaintainthefollowingweb‐basedcollaborationtoolsrelatedtosoftwareactivity:1. • TheEcosystemServicesDatabase(esd.uvm.edu),adefiningprojectinthehistoryoftheGundInstituteandtheEcoinformaticsCollaboratory,containsspatially‐explicit,peer‐reviewedvaluationdataaswellasmethodsofanalysis,publications,andprojectionmodels,anditisamajor,freelyavailableresourceforanyoneinvolvedinthepracticeofEcosystemServiceseconomicvaluation.

• TheIntegratedModellingwebsite(www.integratedmodelling.org)isarepositoryoftechnicalinformationonintegrated,knowledge‐mediateddataandmodelmanagementthatservesasaresourceforawidecommunitydespitebeingonlypartiallycompleted.

TheARIESproject,mylatestongoinggrantfromtheNationalScienceFoundation,is
