Sincethe1960s,interestintherelevanceandapplicationofOrffpedagogicalprincipleshasspreadthroughouttheworld.InterestintheOrffapproachinNewZealandhasburgeonedinthelast15years.ONZAisanationalorganisationofmusiceducatorscommittedtosupportingthedevelopmentofthisapproachwithintheNewZealandcontext.ONZAalsoseekstofosterresearchinarts-basededucationandiscommittedtodevelopingresourcesforteachersbasedonabiculturalapproachtomusic/movementeducation.ONZAisalsoamemberoftheOrffSchulwerkForum,basedinSalzburg,aninternationalforumofOrfforganisations.MembershipthroughoutNewZealandhelpsincreaseONZA’svoiceinthepromotionofmusicandmovementeducationforALLchildreninschoolsandthecommunityatlarge.

TheOrffapproachtomusiceducationisbasedontheworkofcomposersCarlOrffandGunildKeetman,whoworkedascollaboratorsinthe1930s.Orff-inspiredteachersenablechildrentolearnthroughsinging,dancing,andplayingwithmusicalmaterialdrawnfromtheimaginativeandculturalworldofthechild.Creativityisattheheartoftheapproach,whichiscertainlynotamethod.Keyprinciplesare:

What is the Orff approach?

To register:

ONZAoffers6-daycertificatedcoursesintheOrffapproachatfourdifferent“levels”(1-4)appropriatetotheneedsofbothspecialistandgeneralistteachersworkinginearlychildhood,primary,intermediateandlowersecondary-schoolsettings,andalsomusictherapists.Thesecourses,withanemphasisonhands-on,interactiveprocessesintroducetheOrffapproach,whichischaracterisedbytheintegrationofspeech,movementandmusicwithafocusonexplorationandimprovisation.

ONZA-certificatedcoursesareofferedinaccordancewithguidelinesdevelopedspecificallyfortheAotearoa/NewZealandcontextandhaveastrongemphasisonthiscountry’sbiculturalidentity.ThecourseshavebeendevelopedinawaythatiscomparablewithcoursesdevelopedinothersettingssuchasAustraliaandtheUnitedStates.ONZAisamemberoftheOrffForuminSalzburg.AccreditedcourseshavebeendesignedbyfacilitatorswhohavedevelopedtheirknowledgethroughcontactwiththeForumandthroughteachingandlearningexperiencesinourownuniquecontextofAotearoa/NewZealand.

Level1&2coursesareledbyfiveNewZealandbasedteachers,eachhighlyexperiencedandhighlyknowledgeableintheOrffapproachand,inparticular,initsapplicationwithinAotearoa,NewZealandsettings.ThesecoursesoccuratdifferenttimesoftheyearandindifferentlocationswithinNewZealandaccordingtoneedanddemand.PleasegototheONZAwebsitefordetails(http://onza.nz/professional-learning/).Level1isopentoallinterestedteachersand/orthoseworkingincommunitysettings.Therearenospecificpre-requisitesotherthanacommitmenttomusicandmovementeducationandadesiretobecomefamiliarwiththisapproach.AuniquefeatureoftheOrffapproachisitscapacitytocaterforawiderangeofneedsandabilitiesandclassesareusuallymadeofparticipantsfromavarietyofmusic/artsbackgrounds.OncompletionofLevel1itisrecommendedthatparticipantsspendatleastoneyearapplyingnewlearningintheirown

contextbeforeundertakingLevel2.Level2reviseselementaryOrffprinciplesandprocessesbeforebeginningtoexploremoresophisticatedmusicalanddancecontentthroughtheOrffapproach.Aswellfurtheropportunitiesforimprovisationandcompositionareoffered,onbothanindividualandagroupbasis.

Dr Millie LockeMillieisanexperiencedpractitionerandfoundationpresidentofONZA.Shecoordinatescertificated(levels)coursesandwaslargelyresponsibleforestablishingandmaintainingONZA’scollaborativerelationshipwiththeUniversityofWaikatofrom2009until2016.SheattendedAOSAOrfflevelscoursesattheEastmanSchoolofMusicinRochesterNewYorkin1996and1997.In2016shegraduatedwithaPhDwheresheinvestigatedthewaytheOrffapproachisappliedinarangeofNewZealandschoolsanditsimpactonteacherswhowereexposedtoitsinfluence.

Christoph MaubachChristophtrainedattheOrffInstituteinSalzburgandhadtheprivilegeofbeingtaughtbymentorswhowerethemselvesappointedtopositionsbyCarlOrffhimself.AfterastintaslecturerinmusiceducationattheCatholicUniversityinMelbourne,ChristophdecidedtomakeAotearoa/NewZealandhishome.Heisa

vastlyexperiencedOrffpresenterwhohasrunworkshopsina

Celia StewartCeliagraduatedwithaMasterofEducationspecialisinginmusiceducationfromtheUniversityofWaikatoin2013.HerthesisstudiedtheapplicationoftheOrffapproachwithagroupofprimary-agedKiwichildren.ShecompletedcertificatedOrffcourses(1to4)inbothAustraliaandAotearoa/NewZealand.Since2011shehasbeenMusicDirectoroftheChristchurchSchoolofMusic,andhasalsoworkedasMusicEducationConsultantandspecialistmusicteacherinprimarysettings.

Priya GainPriyateachesatEasternHuttSchoolasmusic/movementspecialistacrossthewholeschoolandiscurrentlycompletingaMastersofEducationspecialisinginmusicandartseducationattheUniversityofWaikato.ShehascompletedONZAcertificatedtraininguptoLevel4intheAotearoa/NewZealandcontextandhasplayedapivotalrolefacilitatingworkshopsintheOrffapproachintheWellingtonregion.Shehasastrongcommitmenttothedevelopmentoflocalteachingresourceswhichexpressthebiculturalidentifyofthiscountry.Since2016theSchoolofEducationatVictoriaUniversityhascontractedPriyatoteachmusicmodulesintheprimarylearningprogramme.

Renée MorinTheOrffapproachwaspartofRenée’smusiceducationtraininginthe1990sinCanada.ShehasaMastersdegreefromtheUniversityofQuebecinMontrealandundertookfurtherOrfftraininginAotearoa/NewZealandwhensheemigratedin2005.RenéecompletedpostgraduatestudyinmusicanddanceeducationattheOrffInstituteinSalzburg,Austriain2010-2011.SheisahugelyexperiencedOrfffacilitatorwithaparticularinterestinmovementanddance.
