DIRTASSIGNMENT1
This assignment explores the principles and methods of operating on the earths
surface to prepare a site. Each student was asked to
manipulate and organize this malleable surface using earthwork techniques such
as cutting, grading, filling, etc. A series of case stud-
ies by architects and artists provided students with in-
formed strategies that illus-trate design opportunities for organizing and recom-
posing this mineral ground plane. Particular consider-
ation was placed on drawing techniques and conventions
used to communicate and execute site work.

GROUNDINGASSIGNMENT2
This second assignment, Grounding, was one of the
principal focuses of the design studio this semester and contin-
ued the exploration of site by integrating planes and volumes
into the constructed surface of assignment one to develop a series of interior and exterior
spaces as well as circulation paths. By exploring what the
site can do, its potential, or in Alex Walls terminology ex-
amine the means of the site, students were asked to seek
innovative methods that accom-modated program or allowed
it to emerge. Within these new geographies, the conventional
relationship between the build-ing as architectural figure and
the ground as a static horizontal surface are reconsidered: favor-
ing new open interpretations in a fusion of contours, and the
dissolution of boundaries.

Exploring the interface be-tween site and program was the
studios occupation during this final project. Wedged between
a convergence of transporta-tion infrastructure and in-
numerable legal easements, the projects site serves as an opportunity to explore archi-
tectural solutions for a com-munity that has been served by insensitive civil engineer-
ing practices dating back half a century. A new arts facility for SLANGUAGE, a non-profit
organization dedicated to as-sisting artists at various points
in their careers served as the program. An emphasis on pat-tern and geometry was paired
with investigations into opera-tive techniques to offer new architectural strategies that
cultivated innovative spatial organizations within the city.
