Overview
Blackboard© Analytics for Learn was used to identify online courses
taught during academic year 2014-2015. Courses classified as
internships, independent study, clinical, field study, or used a third-party
learning platform were removed from the study. From the remaining
number, twenty courses were selected: ten with the highest and ten with
the lowest levels of student minutes spent in the course.
Courses from each group were qualitatively compared to determinesimilarities with respect to select course design elements:
course announcements, number of assessments, types of
assessments, Blackboard tool usage, and course
calendar.
Defining Student Engagement ….
in the Online Learning Environment
Course Accesses
Accesses are recorded when a student logs onto Blackboard Learn and
clicks on the link to the specific Blackboard Learn course. They may not
have completed any activities or accessed any content.
Interactions
Interactions are recorded whenever a student completes an action in
the Blackboard Learn site (e.g. opens a folder, downloads a document,
etc.). Interactions can be thought of as the number of clicks in the
Blackboard course.
Minutes
Minutes are calculated from when the student accesses the Blackboard
Learn course until they log out or access another Blackboard Learn
course.
Submissions
Submissions are recorded when a student submits something to the
Blackboard Learn course using a Blackboard tool (e.g., Blackboard
Assignment, Test, Discussion Board item, etc.).
