Understanding the functioning of scientific instruments is quite hard.They cannot be touched nor seen working because they are fragile.

How to disclose the multifaceted meanings of the instruments to the public, particularly to schools?

The Series “The Instruments of Science”

Multimedia applications that aim to provide helpful information

for the comprehension of the most significant objects in the IMSS collections.

They are organized in three sections:

7. History: the historical aspects surrounding the Instruments are described

8. Explore: the user can manipulate the instrument through a real-time rendering

9. Simulation: the user can apply the instrument to solve concrete problems, often through games

Key points to achieve effective educational tools

• Strong collaboration between scholars and multimedia team to

ensure the correct presentation of contents;

• Attention to the choice of the most appropriate kind of

symbolic representation for each kind of content;

• Organization of contents into different levels of complexity;

• Within the Pencil project collaboration with teachers was

emphasized in order to achieve a stronger pedagogical impact
