A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE
Today’s gospel reminds us once we set our “hand to the
plow” of parenting and marriage, “we cannot look back.”
This is what commitment means: to say ‘yes’ to the
choice to give up other choices, and ‘yes’ to the promise
to be faithful to an unknown future with our spouse.

Following Christ means persevering through difficulties.
This is a lesson that all the saints have had to learn.
And their example should inspire us with courage and
faith.
St Jane Francis de Chantal, who lived in the early
1600s, had an especially poignant difficulty to overcome
when she discovered that God was asking her to start a
new religious congregation, together with St Francis de
Sales - the congregation of the Visitation of the Virgin
Mary.
Jane, a young French noble woman, married the
Baron of Chantal when she was 20 years old. Deeply in
love, they ran an estate that was the envy of all their
peers in prosperity and domestic happiness. Their
robust marital joy was a product of their love for each
other and their love for Christ. She was widowed when
she was only 28, losing her husband in a hunting
accident. From then on, she dedicated herself more and
more to following Christ. She became indispensable to
her elderly father and father-in-law, and a bastion of
hope and service for the poor.
But God was calling her to a different mission.
When she announced her departure, a storm broke.
Her friends and family wept and pleaded with her not to
go. Villagers lined the streets in tears. When her last
goodbye had been said, her fifteen-year-old son, whom
she had provided for and was leaving in the care of his
grandfather, threw himself around her neck and begged
her to stay.
Through her tears, she reminded him that it was
God who was calling her, and she stepped towards the
door. Her son rushed ahead and threw his body on the
ground in the doorway, still begging her not to leave.
But she knew what God was asking of her, and the
bishop had approved her plans, and her son was well-
provided for (she would be visiting with him regularly).
So, although she shed her own tears while she did
it, she stepped over him and went out the door, keeping
her hands to the plow and crossing a threshold that
would lead her to found 65 new convents and spark a
spiritual revival all throughout Europe. Father Michael
13th Sunday in Ordinary Time Don’t Look Back
Another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but let me first say
farewell to those at my home.” Jesus said to him, “No
one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit
for the kingdom of God.” Luke 9:61-62
Question of the Week
Adult: When have you faltered or looked back during
your journey of faith?
Youth: What can you do to be a stronger follower of
Jesus this week?
