2017:InnovatingSustainableSolutionsforourPlanetEarthShare’snationwidenetworkincludesnearly600state-based,nationalandinternationalAmericannonprofits,proudlysupportedbyEarthShareatWorkprogramsandemployeephilanthropy.EarthShare’sChapters,StateAffiliates,andbenefitingmemberorganizationsengagedthousandsofpeopleinphilanthropic,educational,andcommunityvolunteerismactivitiesin2017tohelpcareforandprotecttheworldweshare.TheEarthSharenetworkdeliveredmorethan$3.8millioninfundingtoAmerica’smostrespectedandresponsibleenvironmentalandconservationorganizationsin2017.Thisincluded$134,744raisedthroughEarthShareatWorkpartnerships,$42,000ofwhichrepresentedgrantsandsponsorshiprevenueformembersinvolvedinourcorporateengagementprograms.Withnearly30yearsofexperienceinengagingprivateandpublicsectoremployeesaroundenvironmentalissues,EarthShareremainedfocusedonopportunitiestoharnessthepowerofpurposefulemployeestosupportachievementofcorporatesustainabilitygoals.EarthSharefinalizedandpublisheditsthree-yearstrategicplanin2017toguidetheorganizationinallactivitiesthrough2020.Inittheorganizationidentifiedfiveprimarystrategiestohelpitsnetworkengagemorepeopleandresourcesinthecareofourenvironment.Ourstrategyisfocusedonachievinganinclusive,involved,andpurpose-drivennetworkthatisempoweredtocreatethechangeourplanetneedstoflourishandensureathrivingfuture.

EarthSharecontinuedtoinnovateprogrammaticofferingstoincreasesupportforitsmembershipandassistitscorporatepartnerswithmeetingtheexpectationsofamodernworkforce,andenablethemtocreatepositiveimpactforsocialandenvironmentalissues.InApril2017theorganizationlaunchedapilotprogramcalledtheEarthShareCorporateAlliance.Theprogramwasdevelopedasaturn-keysolutiontohelpcompanieseducatetheiremployeesaboutourchangingplanet,andempowerthemwithopportunitiestocreatetangibleenvironmentalandsocialimpact.Alliancemembercompaniesweregiventoolstohelpinformandengageemployees,andprovideawell-roundedperspectiveabouttheimpactsofclimatechangeonourfood,water,energy,andeconomicsystems.Inadditiontoengagingcontentthatincludedtips,newsandwebinars,theCorporateAlliance“toolkit”providedrelevantcustomizedcontenttobuildawarenessabouttheimpactofclimatechangeonpartner-specificindustries.Theprogramalsoofferedmanagerstheflexibilitytodecidehowtostrategicallyleveragecontentandothermemberbenefitstogalvanizetheiremployees’commitmentandprogresstowardspecificgoals.EarthSharecontinueditsworktoexpandalladvisoryandprogrammaticservicesinsupportofenvironmentalprogressanditsmembers’missions:

ENVIRONMENTALJUSTICE

§ Earthjusticelegalexpertscontinuetosupportagrowingclimatemovementacrossthe

country.TheorganizationwonkeyvictoriesinCongressandthecourtsagainsteffortstostallorrepealfederalrulespreventingoilandgasoperationsfromwastingmethane,anextremelypotentclimatepollutant.Partneringwithconservationcoalitions,tribes,andcommunitygroups,theorganizationchallengednewfossilfuelinfrastructurethatwillharmcommunitiesandourclimate,fromCaliforniaandthePacificNorthwesttoNewYork,fromtheGreatPlainstotheGulf.[source:Earthjustice]

• OceanaattachedsatellitetagstobluesharksoffthenortheastcoastoftheU.S.totrack

theirmovementstoseehowclosetheygettofishingboats.Tensofmillionsofsharksarekilledeveryyearwhenthey’recaughtinfishinglines.Thetechniquefromthispilotprogramcanbeusedtostudythemovementsofotherspeciesthatmightbesensitivetobycatch,suchasseaturtles.Thedatacouldindicatehotspotswherefishingshouldbelimited,orwheremodifiedgearisneeded.[source:Oceana]

SUSTAINABILITY

• WithhelpfromEnvironmentalDefenseFund,Californiadoubleddownonitscommitmenttoslowingclimatechangebyvotingtoextendthestate’scap-and-tradeprogram.ThecapguaranteesemissionsreductionsandisacentralcomponentofCalifornia’sambitiousplantocutemissions40%below1990levelsby2030.Thelegislationcapsgreenhousegasesemittedbythestate’slargestpolluters,andlowersthatcapovertime,creatingamarketforinnovationstohelpcompaniescutemissionsatlowestcost.[source:EnvironmentalDefenseFund]

• BatConservationInternationalawardedascholarshiptoresearcherKristenLear,a

researcherfocusedontheneedsofMexicanlong-nosedbats,whichareessentialtopollinatingagave.Developing“bat-friendly”agaveprogramswillhelpmaintainthegeneticdiversityandsustainabilityofagaves,whichwillinturnpreventerosion,providefoodandshelterforwildlife,andprovidethelocalcommunitywiththemakingsoftraditionalmedicines,tequila,foodforcattle,fibersforclothing,andmore.[source:BatConservationInternational]

• TheNationalEnvironmentalEducationFoundation(NEEF)continuedtoexpanditsHandsontheLand(HOL)networkoffieldclassrooms,whichnowtotals234sitesstretchingfromAlaskatoFloridathatareconnectingstudentstonearbypubliclandsforplace-based,hands-onlearning.In2017,NEEFdistributedmorethan$90,000inmini-grantstoHOLmembersthathelpedtocovercriticalneedssuchasstudenttransportationandsupplieslikebinoculars,telescopes,andweathergauges.Theprogramalsofeaturesawebsitewhereuserscanshareinformationandlearnabouttheirlocalecosystems,creativeteachingstrategies,andmore.[source:NEEF]
