January 2018
“So, they kept the matter (of the transfiguration) to themselves, ques-tioning what this rising from the dead could mean.” (Mark 9:9)
On Sunday, February 11, we will cel-ebrate a minor festival of the church year: Transfiguration. (Mark 9:2-9)
Mark mentions a couple of times how the observers of Jesus’ life re-main quiet. That had its purpose in Jesus’ time, but today? No! We need to be silent no longer!
And, true, you and I can’t necessarily transfigure ourselves, unless you visit a plastic surgeon I suppose; but, in the New Year, we can transform ourselves. Some do it in the form of New Year’s Resolutions (which are only as good as we are in keeping them throughout the year); some of us do it much more subtlety.
I would like to invite you to trans-form during this season of Epiphany, the season where God finds ways “to show” (a definition of the word “Epiphany”) who this person Jesus truly is! We will discover this through the reading of the Gospels each Sun-day of the season.
The “King’s 100” incentive we are offering this year will include some new and inviting ways to participate in the ministry of OSLC.
Look elsewhere in this newsletter for the reading through the New Testa-ment in 2018. It basically encourages you to read one chapter of the New
Testament each day. You will finish before the year is up! We will con-nect from time-to-time to share our thoughts on what has touched our hearts in our reading.
Christian Education and Outreach are teaming up to create new ways to minister to those very close to us – the homeless of Johnson City. Watch future newsletters and bulletins for ways you can assist!
Groups of home communion teams will be developed in January. Those who have signed up on their Time and Talent forms for 2018 will be contacted soon to set up that train-ing. This doesn’t take the place of what the pastors are already doing, but will allow those unable to at-tend church on a regular basis to receive the sacrament on a more regular basis.
Expect contacts from Council Repre-sentatives soon as we organize for the New Year. We need you here!
Take time to ponder these offerings. Yes, we do need you! Christ can use you in His ministry through OSLC.
We are grateful for your service to Him throughout last year. Let’s see what we can do to reach out even more in 2018!
Your friend in Christ,
Pastor Jim

Thank you so much during the season of Advent for the cards, thoughts, and gifts you have shared with us. It means so much to be thought of in these ways, especially during the busy season that December brings us. God bless you as the New Year is here, and please know how much we love you all!

Adult Sunday School – Library Class for the new year
Pastor Jim’s “Come and See” Series of which the text for this class is your Bible (imagine that!), otherwise known as the BYOB class (Bring Your Own Bible).
“The Initial Gospel: His story by young Mark”
Beginning on Sunday, January 7, 2018, the “Library Class” of OSLC Adult Sunday School will begin its study of the Gospel of Mark through the season of Epiphany.
It’s widely felt that Mark was the very first Gospel to appear on the scene. But, it doesn’t include (in its most original form) the birth of Jesus, the Sermon on the Mount, nor much of the resurrection of Jesus. Why?
The invitation to all is clear: “Come and see” (John 1:46)
The schedule will be for January: (7th) Over-view and Chapter One; (14th) Chapters 2, 3, & 4; (21st) Chapters 5, 6, & 7; (28th) Chapters 8, 9, & 10.
Hope to see you there!
January Confirmation Class
We will finish our study of the Ten Com-mandments. Classes will be from 6-8 p.m. on Sundays, January 14 and 28.

Council
Pastor Ed opened with devotions.
Welcome was offered to our nominated council members: Janeen Bradley Pennell (Shepherding), Ken Loveday (Property), Connor Hall (Youth Representative), and David McAllister (Vice-President). The other new member is Tedd Stephens, (who will move from Property Council Rep to President). Ken Diehl was re-nominated as Financial Secretary.
Upcoming events were discussed. Each of them are found throughout this newsletter.
Compliments and thank you’s are also found throughout this newsletter, mostly in the “Thank You to…” sec-tion of this newsletter.
At this date, Ken Diehl reported, the Time, Talent, & Treasure info is as follows:
71 forms received – 61 had pledges; 10 did not.
$247,881 pledged so far. $13,095 expected from “no pledge gifts” (new gifts for 2018)
$127,945 “no pledge gifts” based on long time members giving records) $17,087 loose offering (based on pre-vious years) $406,008 Total (so far) (Editor’s Note: more has come in since this meeting.)
It was also pointed out that at this very date we have about $1,000 in operating cash.
All previous Minutes and current council reports were approved.
Business Items:
Columbarium plans. It was discussed that a committee will be put together to finalize plans for a columbari-um, located on the property of the church. Pastor Jim will organize a small committee to help with this (Columbarium: a small mausoleum to place the cremains of deceased members of OSLC.) A generous donor has offered to pay for the Columbarium.
Renovation of Nave and Chancel: Pastor Ed reported that Ms. Anne Gerrietts, Mission Investment Fund Building Consultant Architect, will come to OSLC sometime the first of February to discuss chancel renova-
tions. A small group of people will meet with her to dis-cuss the possibilities that would allow for Heartsong to move into the nave and chancel along with the existing traditional worship experience.
Annual Retreat for 2018 will be Saturday, January 20, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Monthly devotions were set for 2018.
Agenda was set for the 2017 Annual Meeting.
It was moved, seconded, and approved by council that bo-nuses would be provided for the church staff (less the pas-tors) and the PDO staff. (These bonuses had been previ-ously discussed of not happening this year because of our financial situation.)
Thanks was offered to all of our outgoing council mem-bers: Mitch King (President); Sean Golden (Vice-President). Tom Marshall (Shepherding); Lewis Wessner (Youth Representative), and Tedd Stephens (Property).
We adjourned with the Lord’s Prayer, 8:32 p.m.

WELCA News Our WELCA Christmas project was a great success thanks to the generosity of gifts, time, and talents from so many members of the congregation! Special thanks to everyone who donated gloves for The River, to Karin McCoy, Judi Boebel, Beverly Gugliotta, and Kathy Bass for putting to-gether the candle tins and to the group that met to put to-gether the toiletry kits. All of these efforts help keep many women warm and know that they are loved.
Circle meetings will resume in January.

Circle meetings are a great way to get involved in our con-gregational life. All women of OSLC are invited to attend one or both of these gatherings.
It is time to start collecting for our Personal Care Kits that
help those around the world. If you wish to purchase, we
need dark colored bath towels, individually wrapped soap
bars and toothbrushes, nail clippers and large-toothed
combs. If you wish to write a check, please make it paya-
ble to WELCA and note Personal Care Kits. Checks can be
placed in the WELCA mailbox or given to Kathy Bass,

Dear Church family,
Thank you for all you have done for David and me during his first stages of injury, surgery, postop-erative period and my respiratory crud.
We very much appreciate the prayers, sitting with me during David’s surgery, telephone calls, corre-spondence, yardwork, house disinfectant supplies, Christmas tree, and wonderful gifts of food. A spe-cial thank you as well for getting our Christmas tree set up. We are sincerely humbled and grateful for your outpouring of love.
We feel so blessed to be members of this Christian family.
In Christ’s love,
David and Becky Hamilos
Our sympathies to Ann, Terry,

Blood Drive Update
On December 10, Marsh Blood Services col-
lected 16 units of blood at OSLC. We got off to
a slow start but soon picked up the pace and
had a good turnout. With blood collections
being low during the holiday season due to
colds, flu, travel, etc., both Marsh and OSLC
were pleased with the turnout. Our next
blood collection is scheduled with Marsh for
February, 11, 2018. Mark your calendars
now! Contact Susan or Mike Kirkland (794-
8167) or Larry Ecklund (202-1272) for more
information.

I wonder how Mary felt when the angel appeared to her and said, “ Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favor with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father Da-vid: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever;
and of his kingdom there shall be no end.” Luke 1: 30-33.
Can you imagine? I am sure her heart was filled with ques-tions, concerns, and mixed emotions. But, Mary was faithful to God and trusted in what the angel had said to her. Be-cause of God’s precious son, Jesus, you and I have been
given the perfect gift.
I want to thank all of you for participating in the parish nurse programs at OSLC and encourage you to continue to do so in the upcoming year. Let us strive to stay healthy in a holis-tic way (body, mind, and spirit). Trust can be difficult and doesn't come easy but it is the key to a successful life in Christ. Just like Mary, we have to trust that God is doing what is best for us. Think about the honor she was given and then think about the pain, hurt, disappointment, and hardship she struggled with by watching her Son suffer for the sins of the world. Can I say that this is how Mary felt? No, I can’t. But, looking at it from a mother’s point of view, I can only imagine. Let us trust in our hearts that God knows what is best and follow His guidance on how to live a healthy holistic life in Him.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to ALL.

Musings from the Organ Bench
Happy New Year, my dear Parish Family!
What a wonderful time this is! The year is new, our slates are clean and we can resolve to do all kinds of wonderful things in 2018. One of my resolutions is to be happier with what I have and who I am! (Okay I do want to lose weight, but yuck that’s such a bore!)
Your council has put challenges before you with the King’s 100. I hope that some of your talents and special efforts will be in the music/education programs of our church! I would love to over-crowd our choir loft with joyful singers! I would greatly enjoy needing to keep a calendar of all the special instrumental solos! I would also like to see us have so many opportunities for study and fel-lowship that we have to flip a coin to choose. (Now that’s a silly way to say it, but seriously, we have such talented teachers here and there is so much to learn.)
On a different note!
You are invited to a most special event on January 7, at 4:30 p.m. in our Sanctuary: An Epiphany Celebration: Let Your Light Shine! Five churches from the area are coming together to sing and praise together. I hope that you will be excited to attend this event. I KNOW it will be most special and the fellowship inherent is going to be great!
Recently Pastor Ed reminded me that if we had only one verse to sum up the Good News, it would be this one! John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that who-ever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
I truly am loved and so are YOU! Blessings and peace,
Carolynn Bailey
