SPEAKING FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES

Will help you to become

better listeners and speakers of English

The Listening Module

There are 4 Units in the Listening Module. At the end of each unit, you will be assessed based

on your class performance (CPG). These units will develop your listening skills by

showing you abbreviations, different ways of note-taking, getting the main idea of a lecture and many other things.

You will need all of these skills in your department courses.

Listening Assessment

There are 2 sections to the listening assessment.

1. Take notes and then answer questions from your notes.

2. Answer questions while listening.

The Speaking Module

There are 4 Units in the Speaking Module. At the end of each unit, you will be assessed based

on your class performance (CPG). These units will develop your speaking skills, by

showing ways of doing research, organizing a talk and giving a presentation in front of an audience.

Do not forget that your department teachers may ask you to give presentations in different courses on different topics.

23% of your overall grade will be based on your performance in your final presentation.

Your presentation will be evaluated on the following basis:

Introduction – 10 pts Content – 20 pts Conclusion – 10 pts Fluency – 20 pts Body Language – 10 pts Questions – 15 pts Visuals – 15 pts

Academic Word List (Mini Dictionary)

In the reading passages of your book, you will see words in bold.

THE EVOLUTION OF INTELLIGENCE

Intelligence, as we understand it, is the ability to comprehend a given set of events, to analyze its results and to use the knowledge gathered to interpret, predict or conceptualize other similar or dissimilar occurrences. Human intelligence has always been directed towards creation. Humans have expressed their intelligence through the creation of new structures and objects. Human creation has now progressed towards replicating the human image, not through reproduction alone but also through scientific wizardry.

Academic Words

These words are samples of words that are being widely used in the academic world.

You will be asked to learn these words, their synonyms and definitions.

Your written exams will have a vocabulary component where you will be asked to either use some of the given words or give their synonyms.

You will find these words in the mini dictionary starting at the back of your coursebook.

Writing Output Task

At the end of most units, you will be asked to complete a writing task that includes the information you have gathered from the listening and reading tasks.

The purpose of the writing task is to determine how well you were able to understand and use the information presented in the unit.

Attendance

Attendance is obligatory.

If you miss more than 25% (14 hrs) of total class hours, you will not be allowed to take the final exam.

YOUR CPG COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE OF FOUR LETTER GRADES

CPG is…

A grade that encourages your participation in class activities.

NOT a randomly given grade based on teachers intuitions or likes and dislikes.

Punctuality

Students are expected to come to classes ON TIME.

Your teacher has the right to mark you absent if you are late.

Health Reports

Health reports will NOT be accepted to make up for absenteeism.

They are only valid for Midterm and Final Exams.

Materials

All students are expected to come to class fully prepared to take part in the lesson.

This means you should have your course book and a pen/pencil.

Do not forget that your teacher has the right not give you CPG points if you are not prepared to participate.

One final word…

I wish you all the very best in your academic

year.
